Snowglobe of Doom posted:That reminds me of the guy who died filming the Mt St Helen's eruption. When he realised he couldn't escape the blast he kept filming until the last possible moment and then cradled the camera underneath his body to preserve it in the hopes that his corpse would be discovered and the footage would be useful to the study of volcanoes. his name was Robert Landsberg

Collateral Damage posted:We had the same thing happen in our office. Fortunately it split in the basement, not in the cable shaft. I did some volunteer work for a museum a while ago. One day they gave me a tour of their basement storage where they got all stuff that doesn't fit in the current exhibitions stored. The lady told me that one day they went in there and noticed there was quite a stream of water flowing down one of the walls. It was raining badly and turned out some folks were doing maintenance of pipes or something under the car park to the back of the museum, they had dug a hole next to where that basement wall was and hadn't covered it up properly so all rain water just collected there until it overflowed into the basement. They luckily managed to keep the water contained until people could fix the hole from outside. I don't even want to imagine how much damage flooding a museum storage could do... Oh another fun fact about that, for smaller objects there were all these cabinets lined up with little metal signs on them saying what was in them. They had stuck a piece of paper on one of the cabinets, over the sign, that said "DO NOT OPEN - LIGHT SENSITIVE". So of course I asked the lady what was in there. "Oh there's nothing light sensitive in there. It's just where we keep our collection of human skulls. One time we gave a group a tour of this place and someone opened that cabinet and they started complaining about desecration of human remains so after that we put that sign up."

Why wouldn't you just put fuckin boards across the gap? It couldn't cost that much and you can keep the boards for next time.

Keiya posted:"DC-10? As in the... holy poo poo that IS the passenger jet." At the end of the dump it's unladen and they probably had exactly enough fuel on board for the balance of the round trip + alternate. I'm not going to claim that an empty airliner will behave like a fighter pilot, but I think they'd surprise you. There may also be some perspective weirdness with the camera involved.

The plane in the video is 'only' an MD-80, quite a bit smaller than the DC-10, but still impressive to see it get that close to the hill. Here's the same plane in Alaska: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2w44Fae6Xk The DC-10 tanker does also go pretty low though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPedHJNQNUM loving low: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgdmW-Q7ZCI

There are firefighting planes based on 747 and other large airframes too. They're all heavily reinforced, not just to handle the weight of the water or the high G maneuvers, but also to handle the weight of the pilots' massive balls. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPVb1JOGrgg&t=66s The OSHA is people hanging out in the drop zone.
