Yeah, so what this represents is the reaction to last week's flailing over North Korea. Guess his base didn't take too kindly to the threat of nuclear war.

This is a drop among people that still ID conservative/republican instead of just switching their affiliation to "independent" when the times get tough.

yeah, it's only interesting because it's the lowest point recorded so far. it seems to be evidence of just a long slow crumble rather than the nazi supporting actually moving the needle a lot.

but the idea that his base is rock solid isn't born out by the data: that base continues to slowly crumble which is a very good thing and suggests there's more support he can lose

And it doesn't even account for that base itself crumbling, i.e. people who just stop identifying as Republican.

At the very least I hope this is like when Roof shot up that church and people couldn't pretend the flag was anything other than a hate symbol. It's going to be hard for non-Trump politicians to say that those statues have any value after nazis decided to come in a throw a fit about one's removal.

that's reflected in the overall approval rating. people who stop identifying as republican does gently caress up the polling of "republicans" though it seems they're accounting for it by including people who self-describe as "conservatives" - they may keep that self-description even if they renounce trump and the republican party.

Is it usual for press not to applaud a president walking to the podium? He says "thank you" as if he were expecting applause. Perhaps the camera shutters sounded like applause?

The hot take in the online alt-right circle right now is that the Nazis are actually leftists because SOCIALIST IS IN THE NAME REEEE because Mussolini said he was a leftist in one of his two books so that means that the real fashs are the lefties, even though they worship the ground fascists walked on, but they were left, and neo-nazis are right, but, and, cucks, *farts*

He's probably got a couple staffers or sycophants in the crowd to clap. If the microphone is nowhere near them, you won't hear it (or drowned out by camera shutters lol).

Right. The takeaway for me is that we're at the point where his remaining support is resilient enough that it won't be shaken loose by events like this weekend, unless they're at a scale we really don't want happening like Katrina or 9/11, but it will diminish over time by pure force of attrition as people become disillusioned.

I think the congressional GOP, if it wanted to, could start pushing that number lower by going into open opposition against him, but there's no incentive for them to do that right now. But if nothing of that sort happens, trying to pick apart 1-2 point swings is not useful. Especially since we're having a logarithmically accelerating number of the kinds of events that impacted approval polling in the old world.
