In a stunning development, the counter to naval air power is ground forces.

Pretty pumped for postwar navies to develop combat boarding vessels.

We drive off an American sub.

You cheeky buggers.

The 43rd continue to hold out in their beachhead.

It's a quiet day in the air, with the enemy mainly concentrating on Luganville airfield.

Another wave of lost souls is unloaded by their ships.

I start the bombardment again – lets see if a few weeks of this makes any difference.

The Ryujo is closing in on Rabaul, then she should be safe for a bit of light repairs – then back to Japan for the full work!

We confirm an old tanker kill.

That's right, keep unloading the lambs for the slaughter.

Somebody get these guys all a medal!

These guys are far north – time to see what we can find them.

The Kido Butai come back and do some damage.

Another force is pushed back in China.

Huh, looks like they pulled out of Luganville again.

I need to stop replacements on all non important squadrons for a while I think.

I'm picturing a desolate field deep in Manchuria with 4,000 Betties lined up wingtip-to-wingtip.

The phone rings incessantly in the small shack that serves as the communications office of the local Imperial Japanese Army Air Service meteorology reporting unit.

Nobody answers. Naval aviation officers continue to lose their hair prematurely at alarming rates.

The Allied battleships hit our ships and give us a taste of our own medicine.

They then go on to sink more ships. These are my fuel line, so this is especially painful.

Owch, their counter battery fire is on the ball today.

We have nothing in the area that can take on two battleships. We just have to take the hits and try and bring in support in case it happens again.

At least we see the Independence on there.

21 ships lost in one day. That is not good, even if they didn't add up to a lot of points.

RA Rx
Mar 24, 2016

They add up to 171 points, so that's like half a fleet carrier.

Except it's quite possibly worse for Grey to lose double the above rather than a carrier as he may need his fuel line more. Grey's winning the conventional fight, but not the logistical fight.

Oh thank god! I can't take many more days like yesterday.

We start pushing at Rabaul again.

The night bombers hit our airfields.

Again plane losses come in bursts.

See!

Let's hope that the Battleships move on now. We got lucky today.

Sometimes a force has a chance to evade even in the combat screen. Its possible that the Allied TF lost sight of them, or the Japanese TF commander managed to evade with uh... smoke?

Remember that as the Japanese that you can spontaneously create barges, so if you have supply at Truk, you can create barges there for use as ad hoc supply ships for Rabaul.
