The only useful takeaway from Fallon is that his whole shtick is to be a really nice guy who laughs at himself and is just having so much fun being a jokeman on the television, so when he gets serious and tells you to gently caress off, you've probably done something pretty bad.

TyrantWD posted:It is fine to question Fallon's motives for turning on Trump, because in the most likely scenario of him just chasing ratings, there is a good chance of him flipping back if it becomes good for ratings. If there were a mine collapse, or some other disaster, and Trump did the bare minimum expected from a president in such a situation, you can bet Fallon will be playing with Trump's hair the following week. Similarly the idea that anyone even cares what the pundit Van Jones thinks about anything after he pivoted from crying on election night and being a voice of reason, to calling Trump "presidential" the moment he murders a few people in Syria is probably one of the most skin-crawlingly cynical and destructive things I've seen to normalize Trump. I blame him and his ilk for giving Trump the idea that war and murder = solid media approval. It's not that Fallon denouncing Trump is wrong if it doesn't come from some ideologically pure place, it's whether he's liable to muddy his own message if the media message changes, and he doesn't really take seriously what he's saying. In a way it's worse for the public than just being an all-out Jefferey Lord sycophant.

No, but we are dreamers. as long as there are single points of failure you're going to have the government seeking to control those points of failure. a lot of these "technical solutions to social problems" encryption ideas have leaned heavily on the government just not quite getting where the points of failure are because they're behind the curve, or putting the points of failure outside their control by putting the points of failure in jurisdictions that will not permit the sort of snooping you want to prevent - which is giving credit to the encryption instead of the real hero, whatever social measures were used to get that freedom in that jurisdiction this is all putting aside the problem that the instant you create these super-private communications channels they're instantly invaded by child pornographers because those are the people that want the best protection against government snooping possible and ordinary people are not terribly interested in things that associate them with child pornographers so yeah, it's silicon valley as gently caress, but not in a good way. you can't get around the need for society to decide what level of government snooping it will tolerate

No one here is telling him in a tweet to gently caress off, tweeting sponsors to drop him or whatever. Literally no one gives a poo poo about Fallon. It's YOU whose own poo poo we're trying to rub your nose in. Don't make a habit out of questioning people's motives for doing the right thing. It literally doesn't matter in this specific case what you think about Jimmy loving Fallon. Liberal intellectuals are complete hypocrites telling people that race is culturally constructed and non-essential and then reordering culture completely along racial lines. The invisible knapsack does nothing to help oppressed people it only demoralizes and humiliates privileged people. You can't really check the privilege of someone else you can only check your own, meaning that this program needs the internalized beliefs to already mirror anti-racists ones. White racists will not consent to being singled out and demoralized, they will react and assert their white pride.
