lol thanks for this, i exchanged a few words with this toad on friday night and i'm happy to see he had a worse weekend than i did.

I think i'm ready to post a little about my experience so, strap in. maybe i'll turn some of this into some larger essays and sort of organize it a little better.

~~~
when i was invited to come down, someone had mentioned it was a chance for me to get some use out of some gas masks that i had bought after the election. after all, the cops had used chemical weapons liberally back in june the first time all this went down. so i was kind of macho about it and thought it could be really cool. when i was subsequently informed that virginia has a very strict anti-mask law, and that the Commonwealth was prosecuting people for wearing bandanas to protect themselves from gas, it actually caused me to feel afraid and then ashamed. it was sort of an object lesson in white privilege for me, "that" woke white guy. so i just have to get that out of the way before i talk about the rest.
i was a block or two away from the terrorist when he struck down heather and injured all those other people. i can't shake the feeling that someone who i met earlier in the day, whose hand i shook, was her; i can't confirm it either. she (heather or not) was one of many people who thanked me over the weekend for helping her feel safer (sorry but i'm not going to disclose exactly what i was doing). it really hurts and is a source of deep conflicting feelings for me that i wasn't able to do anything to stop the coward james alex fields jr. i don't really have much else to say about heather right now except that i'm sorry.
the big takeaway from this weekend is despite the actions of a cowardly terrorist, the people won against the fascists, in spite of the police. so let's go back and run through things more chronologically.
i know people here talked about the cops on friday night at the torch march, who stood by as fascists beat anti-racist people who had linked arms, sang and prayed in front of a statue of thomas jefferson. the fascists chased them off by beating them with tiki torches and throwing one into the crowd (spraying kerosene everywhere). then the fascists posed for photographs, chanted and sang jovially as others screamed, and then walked away. then the cops (who had been standing by, watching) took out their batons and cleared the remaining anti-racist protesters from the square. there is no doubt in my mind whose side the police were on, and whose side the police are on.
the next day, all kinds of people came out to stop them. one of the most moving displays for me was the clergy - local (thanks to the methodists? who let us use the church bathroom) and some national people too. cornel west was there for instance. they locked arms and stood on the steps of the park. the fascists showed up and beelined for them. instead of fighting, the clergy stood aside and continued their prayer and song, letting the fascists in two at a time - into the small area of emancipation park designated for counterprotesters. this was a very clever bit of totally nonviolent resistance that left the fascists half-kettled and blocked in to an area that couldn't fit all of them. to get out and use the rest of the park, they had to walk back through the hostile crowds. even after the clergy people left that area, it kept confusing the fascists, who kept trying to go into that area and doubling back or climbing over other barricades. at least that was my view of it.
i saw other things too, things i can't even describe, that just filled me with hope and joy that day. after five or six separate fascist groups arrived (they used rental vans to drop off groups of 20-40 people at a time and then walk up the street to the park), a LARGE group that might have been BLM arrived with drums, it was electrifying and just really inspiring. it was great to see people from across the left (and even liberals) be so resolute and unite against them using the full diversity of tactics without snitching or self-policing (that i saw anyway). i did not see the sort of obnoxious adventurism or riot tourism that some people talk about.
some big takeaways for YOU the reader are
to get organized however you can - link up with people and get political. go to meetings and marches. fight the reactionary forces however you can, everywhere you can. mass politics, not electoral politics or elite politics or (lol) the police are what beat fascism.
step back and let people who feel the brunt of fascism more than you take center stage.
do not snitch on antifa or black lives matter or "the anarchists" or anyone for opposing the fascists. organize and perform collective self-defense.
the police will not protect you unless you are a nonthreatening white person (even then they did not protect heather); organize and perform collective self-defense. fascists understand that the carceral state - the new jim crow - is their ally.
your time and energy and resources are limited - do not use them to defend the rights of fascists to speak.
fascist speech is a material, direct, and imminent threat to all of society. they are gathering the power to kill.
fascists are cowards. they will jump you if they can; watch your back and never go alone when fascists are near.
The right in general has fallen into the same trap as the center by completely forgetting what the actual left looks like. They're used to screaming slurs only to cause caniption fits and have people run away from them screaming RACIST. Now they're getting beaten up instead.
The alt right as a transgressive movement can only exist in response to spineless centrism. Now that the wolf of actual radical leftists is at their doorstep they don't know how to handle themselves
I would love for this to be the case, but let's not jerk ourselves off too hard.
ideology poisoning leads to wild justification for the unjustifiable. thats why the entire event, thousands of people on both sides, were a Soros crisis act (including the car man and the video/videos of a black protestor getting jumped by a gang of nazis) and nothing is wrong here, normal politics in a normal society
