What I found irritating about him is that he seemed to get away from that in the later stages of the season. It is possible that I could be wrong about that and being mislead by some unlucky shooting percentages and he was still getting those chances, but in my faulty memory I'm not remembering him getting into those scoring areas without the puck as well as he was early in the season

Vesey is a stick-first, body-second player, which is what led to most of those early goals, but that's something that defensemen adjust to, and they'll rattle his stick a bit more to try to make him adjust. Sometimes you'll catch on-ice/bench audio where defensemen point out things like that to each other, it's one of the things I like about the pregame show and AV's show. 8 years, $8.5M per for Draistaitl

Edmonton have to sign Darnell Nurse and a McDavid boosted Ryan Strome after this season, and the season after that, Puljujarvi and Talbot need new contracts. They currently have 8.3m in cap space and that's without McDavid's 12.5m contract. That Lucic contract looks worse and worse.

they probably aren't too thrilled with the Sekera and Russell contracts either e: i forgot to apply the Edmonton Modifier and new evidence shows that in fact they love all 3 of these contracts, and believe they have built a contender for years to come

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is kinda left as the odd man out if and when they need to clear cap space so please look forward to David Staples' hit-piece article coming next summer

That's 21m for 2 players, the same as toews + kane for chicago, 2 players locked in for 8 years through their prime. Bold prediction: RNH traded for an old man at the end of his contract at the deadline. maroon and patrick swapped on and off the mcdavid line to keep their contract renewal expectations in check. I'm happy with the whole thing because McDavid and Draisaitl are entertaining as all hell to watch and there are 3 goons on the team to protect them.

Well those two years of having center depth were pretty fun. Losing both Cullen and Bonino is gonna sting and I don't see Carter Rowney being answer to anyone's problems.

ThinkTank posted:8 years, $8.5M per for Draistaitl That's higher than what I was hoping for ($7.5 mil ideally, max $8 mil). I think this surmises it nicely: https://twitter.com/JonathanWillis/status/897886287658573824 https://twitter.com/JonathanWillis/status/897886647055859712 Basically the hope now is that Draisaitl does end up becoming a true elite #1 center who can drive his line and can play well away from McDavid. Because his production in 15-16 was helped by Hall, and his production last year was helped by McDavid. So you really have to hope they didn't pay $8.5 mil for somebody just because they were McDavid's linemate. Yaya touched on this a bit, but basically Oilers are going to struggle like hell after this season when it comes to re-signing guys. They have $14.2 mil in cap space with 14 guys signed going into 2018-19. Patrick Maroon, Mark Letestu, Jussi Jokinen and Yohann Auvitu are all the upcoming UFAs. Maroon is going to ask for a lot if he plays with McDavid again and produces like last year, so he could be gone. I like Jokinen, I hope he does well and returns for cheap. Letestu might possibly return, possibly not idfk at this point. Auvitu is a 7th d-man at the moment who might have to come back if he plays well enough and the Oilers deal away Nurse. As for RFAs: Ryan Strome, who's going to put up 72 points. Anton Slepyshev, who'll likely play somewhere in the top 9 and top out at 30ish points. Drake Caggiula, who's currently situated to play on the 4th line. Iiro Pakarinen, who's just 13th forward material. Matt Benning, who's the likely candidate to get top 4 minutes while Sekera's dead. Darnell Nurse, who improved a lot from 15-16 to 16-17. Laurent Brossoit, who should play more games this season and will probably get re-signed to a $1 mil deal. That's not to mention 2019 where Talbot's going to ask for at least $6 mil, likely more. God damnit, Chiarelli's going to gently caress this all up. Aye Doc posted:they probably aren't too thrilled with the Sekera and Russell contracts either Sekera is overpaid relative to Klefbom, but for a UFA signing his contract is fine. He's a good top 4 D and deserved his deal. But I could see him being moved after 2018-19, when his NMC becomes a limited NTC and if Nurse is still around and if Caleb Jones is ready for the NHL. Russell, well, that was obviously a mistake before he even signed his new deal. He should (key word: should) be dealt after this season but knowing Chiarelli that won't happen.

ElwoodCuse posted:Any idea what the Penguins offered Cullen to stay or did he just want to go to Minnesota One million plus 700k in bonuses is what he got, which unless JR has something in the works he should have gladly paid because Cullen is the ageless one and the team will miss what he brought terribly. I would guess maybe Minnesota offered him something post player life as well maybe?

All of those guys are replaceable and probably should be replaced next year. Patrick Maroon is David Clarkson 2.0 and it would be a disaster to sign 30-year-old him to any sizable contract because he scored some goals playing with the best player in the league. The Oilers have to re-sign Strome, Nurse, and a handful of completely replaceable depth guys next year. Draisitl is great and that "reset in 2nd contract value" already happened so Drai's getting paid, not 30-year-old Patrick Maroon.

Looking below, Pastrnak and Draisaitl have been almost even in their career P/G, and were close in points this season. I think the 15-16 season, where Draisaitl doubled the production of Pastrnak (albeit in 21 more GP) comes back to haunt Pastrnak and drives his price down. 2014-15: Draisaitl 37 GP, 9 points | Pastrnak 46 GP, 27 points 2015-16: Draisaitl 72 GP, 51 points | Pastrnak 51 GP, 26 points 2016-17: Draisaitl 82 GP, 77 points | Pastrnak 75 GP, 70 points Career: Draisaitl 191 GP, 137 points (0.717 P/G) | Pastrnak 172 GP, 123 points (0.715 P/G)
