+1 for Sonic Mania There are a couple nadirs along the way, to be sure, and the pacing is a little wonky with all the bonus stages, but it's a quality sonic game with solid maps and mechanics.

I think Sonic Mania will carry me to the 29th, especially if I take some time to dig for secrets. I guess I should probably play Zelda a bit too.

Sent my left joycon to Nintendo because it dropped inputs badly if it was more than 30cm away from the console. Got it posted back 2.5 weeks later. Now it only drops inputs if I'm at my couch like 3m away! Nintendo said I should send it back to assess again. Maybe slapping 1 piece of foam inside a piece of plastic won't fix lovely design???

I just realized the Switch desperately needs a sequel to Meteos. Or just the original Meteos. Anything to get me more Meteos

RZA Encryption posted:Soon, but instead of releasing games for old systems, they will be creating games for an imaginary system with specs somewhere between the snes and n64 and presenting them as if they are forgotten classics. I have had multiple dreams about Super Mario Kart 2 that are exactly like this, and it's the best Mario Kart ever, and my heart swells with bittersweet tears because I know nothing can actually be that good.

I hope Nintendo makes a new 2D Mario with sprites someday. Hopefully bundled as a new art-style for Mario Maker Switch.

I don't hear much about the Yoshi game from you guys. It looks really awesome. I like the idea of a platformer with both a front and a back and obviously the art style is an interesting quirk as well. It looks beautiful and relaxing to play. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UA6yCGpxi0U rogue wave fucked around with this message at 06:03 on Aug 16, 2017 |

I see. I dunno if Mario really needs to go back to sprites, personally. A throwback doesn't have to look exactly like it was made on old hardware.

Sprite-based games don't necessarily look like they were made on old hardware either!

well no, I guess that's the wrong way to say it. I mean "look like they're invoking an 8-Bit or 16 bit art style". It just seems like it's all anyone wants to do there sometimes and while it was cute in Mega Man 9 in Mega Man 10 it felt kind of same old same old. Sonic Mania's pretty great though. I dunno. I don't know what to think.

They never said invoking the old school sprites. Just a new 2D artstyle. Honestly, I'd be all for a new look for the 2D series. The same artstyle was used for the NSMB for several games in a row, while SMB, SMB3, and SMW all looked different from each other. And the artstyle for NSMB looks so plastic and lifeless.

Hoping they make a Mario Maker sequel that's not married to the gameplay-style-switching mechanic, so they can have more game-accurate features (like freaking slopes) and even a SMB2 theme.

I'd be down for a Mario title that looked like Wonderboy, with the painterly background and high quality sprite work.

The gameplay of Mario Maker's gameplay styles is the same. The only difference is some items behave slightly differently and SMB1's exclusive access to mystery mushrooms. The physics are based on NSMB's in all three modes. The lack of slopes is purely a design decision and the different styles are almost entirely cosmetic.

Correct me if I'm wrong but IIRC, Mario world style has spin jump, while NSMB style has wall jump, and SMB3 has the P run build up. They do play completely different!

Mario Maker unifies the physics between the games, while preserving distinct moves & mechanics. So overt things like the types of jumps you can do or the way Mario holds items will change between the four modes, but subtler stuff like inertia is kept consistent. It would have felt a lot worse to go through a string of different-styled courses if Mario's sense of weight and acceleration kept changing.

Yeah, they're more different than I gave em credit for. But either way, they function because they operate on a similar base. Super Mario Bros. 2 is too fundamentally a different beast from most other Mario games.

TFRazorsaw posted:Yeah, they're more different than I gave em credit for. I'd say not really. You can keep basic physics the same but change Mario's item holding ability and give him the pick up power and change goombas to shyguys when in that style as well as other enemies to their anakogues.
|
# ? Aug 16, 2017 11:09 |

you'd have to change enemy ai and add a core power that isn't present in the other styles which are pretty different and involves a significant addition to the physics. It's not really a simple change.
