I've been on both sides of the coin and life was definitely better as an O, but that's largely because i had a good couple skippers and a decent wardroom. Some are cesspools of backstabbing and infighting. I remember on friend's ship one ensign would tattle on others for being late or other infractions via the CO's suggestion box.

The hours are shittier sometimes, and you get yelled at a lot by other stressed people. Department heads, on the other hand, have much larger responsibility and can be fired almost willy nilly by the captain and their career ended for something that was outside of their control.

Holy poo poo I just saw an instructor tell like 30 sailors it's ok to bring someone down with an arm bar then drive their knee into the back of the neck/ head in order to gain compliance.
"Remember these are the bad guys we don't care if they get hurt ".

These are moves for dealing with drunks and non-compliant individuals not active combatants.

Nah I was running the track and saw some sailors doing DT half-hearted and went and watched for a bit out of curiosity. I worked for years moonlighting as security for festivals and have dealt with a lot of belligerent drunks. They were encouraging people to do a move directly on the neck or head which is a huge no-no.

Because generally speaking they want the officers to be generalists not specialists. Its a redundancy thing.

Because the engineering officers do no engineering and that is up to enlisted who are good at their jobs. Once you qualify you're doing deck poo poo and get to keep the vague idea of whats happening underneath/behind you.

It's been answered already, but unless someone ends up as chief engineer as a part of their department head tours, after they have their EOOW complete they'll rarely ever stand watch down below again and are instead shuffled back into combat instead as the Tactical Action Officer. Even CHENGs will stand TAO instead of running the plant.

SWOs are essentially navigation types in the commercial world, but they are mostly generalists and are expected to know at least the basics of how poo poo works. Naval officers are very rarely ever hands on with anything in the engine room and are mostly just middle managers.

And so the enlisted generally interact with the half-human officer larvae early enough in their metamorphosis and with enough of each other that they're still able to differentiate between Friend and Food. At least when the chiefs stay in their treeforts and let the LPOs handle their poo poo.

These numbers are larger on other platforms, but the process is similar. Exceptions exist, and I've been particularly blessed in my experiences thus far (probably partly self delusion). Nonetheless, you can see the scars in others and observe damage even in the good conditions.

So that, combined with statistically more likely to have spent four years around real people prior to beginning he process, is one sort of big difference that explains the O-bitching.

Yeh. Drills suck dick. But when you have done them so many times at odd loving hours you remember all the bullshit you're supposed to do and just do it when something bad happens at the odd hours because thats when some bullshit always happens.

Fire in the galley at 0230 is a pretty good example. poo poo got put out in about 8 seconds when it really happened.

I just finished reading that report, and holy poo poo am I gonna have nightmares tonight. One of my recurring nightmares was being in my berthing asleep and we take a missile hit or something and I have to attempt to egress from the berthing while its flooding and report to my repair locker all the way back aft. If I ever meet a Fitz sailor face to face I will buy them whatever drinks they want, they've definitely earned it.

We made everyone do that drill where you put flash gear on them backwards and they have to egress blind and man we thought it was a hilarious joke but poo poo was real for Ftz.

I hope to read the report on what happened before the crash but this really shows how DC can save a ship.
