Officers sure do complain a lot about how hard their lives are. What's the hardest part: the extra pay, the private room on ship? Seriously though, how is being a dept head worse than something like LPO?

I've been on both sides of the coin and life was definitely better as an O, but that's largely because i had a good couple skippers and a decent wardroom. Some are cesspools of backstabbing and infighting. I remember on friend's ship one ensign would tattle on others for being late or other infractions via the CO's suggestion box.

The hours are shittier sometimes, and you get yelled at a lot by other stressed people. Department heads, on the other hand, have much larger responsibility and can be fired almost willy nilly by the captain and their career ended for something that was outside of their control.

As a former lpo, based on what I've seen in the ward room, I'd take lpo of a bunch of poo poo heads over dept head any day of the week from a mental health standpoint.

Nah I was running the track and saw some sailors doing DT half-hearted and went and watched for a bit out of curiosity. I worked for years moonlighting as security for festivals and have dealt with a lot of belligerent drunks. They were encouraging people to do a move directly on the neck or head which is a huge no-no.

Why the heck is the navy having the same people stand OOW/OOD and EOW?

In the commercial world, those are two completely different career tracks, with two (almost) completely different four year teaching curriculum and certification requirements. Also the engineering folks stop sailing after four years and make fat stacks ashore :iiam:

Because the engineering officers do no engineering and that is up to enlisted who are good at their jobs. Once you qualify you're doing deck poo poo and get to keep the vague idea of whats happening underneath/behind you.

It's been answered already, but unless someone ends up as chief engineer as a part of their department head tours, after they have their EOOW complete they'll rarely ever stand watch down below again and are instead shuffled back into combat instead as the Tactical Action Officer. Even CHENGs will stand TAO instead of running the plant.

SWOs are essentially navigation types in the commercial world, but they are mostly generalists and are expected to know at least the basics of how poo poo works. Naval officers are very rarely ever hands on with anything in the engine room and are mostly just middle managers.

The alienation is a huge soulsuck.

12 officers in my wardroom, but if you cut us up into pieces and reassembled us, you'd be lucky to make five humans. That might be a military thing, but expectations and politics exacerbate it. And then five of those guys are DH, XO or CO, and one is me, leaving six people you're supposed to consort with. Half of which went to the same college and 80 percent never had a different job and have hobbies like 'running ' or 'thinking about when I played football'. And since they work twelve hour days then study for pins, constantly hide themselves and their opinions, and half of them are married and so spend their limited freetime trying to maintain a (usually) failing relationship, the most intellectual conversation you can get out of one another that you didn't exhaust in your first month of knowing each other is what the best part of the half of a movie you watched is. And the guys they work for are as emotionally/socially/intellectually stunted with bosses even more so such that most oakleaves can't even comprehend that something is wrong, or that you're uncomfortable lying for a living (after all, they've done it longer without giving up).

DHs have that problem but only two other people they get to talk to, except when the XO orders them to be a liberty buddy.

And so the enlisted generally interact with the half-human officer larvae early enough in their metamorphosis and with enough of each other that they're still able to differentiate between Friend and Food. At least when the chiefs stay in their treeforts and let the LPOs handle their poo poo.

These numbers are larger on other platforms, but the process is similar. Exceptions exist, and I've been particularly blessed in my experiences thus far (probably partly self delusion). Nonetheless, you can see the scars in others and observe damage even in the good conditions.

So that, combined with statistically more likely to have spent four years around real people prior to beginning he process, is one sort of big difference that explains the O-bitching.

Yeh. Drills suck dick. But when you have done them so many times at odd loving hours you remember all the bullshit you're supposed to do and just do it when something bad happens at the odd hours because thats when some bullshit always happens.

Looks like the report was released in conjunction with this news:

Top two officers and other sailors aboard the USS Fitzgerald to be disciplined following deadly collision at sea

quote:

Military.com | 17 Aug 2017 | by Richard Sisk
The commander of the destroyer USS Fitzgerald and the executive officer have been permanently detached from the ship and face non-judicial punishment over the deadly collision in June with a container ship, the Navy announced Thursday.

Cmdr. Bryce Benson, commander of the Fitzgerald, and Cmdr. Sean Babbitt, the executive officer, are "being detached for cause," meaning that the Navy "has lost trust and confidence in their ability to lead," Adm. Bill Moran, Vice Chief of Naval Operations, said during a press conference.

Vice Adm. Joseph Aucoin, commander of the 7th Fleet, has also decided that the top enlisted sailor aboard the Fitzgerald and several other sailors on the watch crew at the time of the collision on June 17 will also face non-judicial punishment, Moran said.

Sure would be nice if it served as a wake up call about the systemic, fleet-wide training issues that The Valley Stared was talking about, but we all know how likely that is.
