I think it's pretty clear by now that the Daughters of the Confederacy were basically running a propaganda campaign in the early 20th century to whitewash the Civil War and it seems to have worked to some degree considering how many people actually bought into the state's rights bullshit.

I'm really sad that Trump and right-wing media have been 100% successful in changing the conversation from "Should we condemn neo-nazis?" to "Should we pull down Confederate monuments, a piece of our history?" The disinformation and the spin and the bullshit has worked. This was never about the statues. But now it is.
