Wootz steel is a complicated (and great looking) way to make mediocre steel into steel with properties that our current commercial steel has (very flexible while also hard - but not brittle - and holding a great edge and still being relatively resharpenable) before a smith could control the environment well enough to do this with normal steel. But European smiths could make normal steel to nearly match Damascus steel as early as the 13th century, since the raw material mined was really, really good by this time and the really good smiths knew their poo poo and refined the process of centuries. Valaryian steel can do poo poo like cut through normal swords, doesn't need to be resharpened and kill Others. It's rooted in the Damascus steel myth ("cuts through rifle barrels!"), but added Fantasy poo poo to it.

If it wasn't good, it wouldn't be popular, and it wouldn't have gotten all the seasons it has, HBO would have cancelled it. But hey lets go back and critique Arya's face for some inane reason.

It is a good show. You're not wrong about that. But is it as good as it was in seasons 1-4? No. And that's why we bitch. Because we like the show and we care.

Just because you like something doesn't mean you can't critique it, in the same way that just because you hate something doesn't mean you can't find praise in it. Here, let me give you an example. I think Arya's plot is dumb. I think Bernadette is hot.

Arglebargle III posted:Cersei may be hanging onto the throne by her nails, but the Seven Kingdoms won't mobilize to face a new threat without some sort of legitimate leadership. The Essos Krew are probably wrong in thinking that Cersei would be able to mobilize the south if they could convince her, but she needs to be dealt with one way or the other before the three relatively undamaged kingdoms can raise new armies and send them north. There will be no North to send them to though. The Wall has fallen and the Night King is moving South with an army of the Undead, who can march day and night. He will arrive in Winterfell (even though it would be smarter to just go Last Hearth, Dreadfort, White Harbour, Moat Caillin) long before any army in the south can mobilize and move North. And if the Night King were super smart (again, he ain't), he would just take his dragon, load up 5 White Walkers and fly them next to Gulltown, Oldtown, Lannisport, White Harbour and King's Landing, dropping them of in a small village next to the city to raise their first few Wights and go from there. Once they have overrun those major population centers, who have no idea how to deal with White Walkers, he has won.

precision posted:I think they're setting up an oh poo poo moment when it's revealed the WWs are fireproof. Lingering on the NK just strolling over flames etc It's been already established? Like when the Hardhome hut was in flames and the WW walked past it. Or when the Children of the Forest set the entrance on fire and the WW just walked past it, while the wights had to dig their way in. Or this episode the NK walked through fire to get a clear noscope of Viserion. Probably a direct hit from dragonfire will do some damage, at least to the non NK white walkers.

They made a point to show that's how they made the white walkers, so that's how they ultimately destroy them. Also remember the WW at Hardhome who just walked through the fire to kill the Thenn and beat Jon's rear end. e: massively beat

A reason I believe why they didn't use Bran as the messenger (aside from the most probable possibility that it didn't occur to them to use the Omniscient Script Carrier to do anything meaningful) was because him warging into ravens and then turning to the Maester and tell him "we need to send a raven" would feel recycled from the previous episode almost to memetic levels. So here is my fanficdonotsteal version: It would have worked and also looked really cool and dramatic (which is D&D's favorite kind of honey) if the Lake Island happened to have a Weirwood phone tree in it. Instead of just the breaking ice component, make it so that the Weirwood tree has an anti-wight field that the NK/WWs have to slowly chip away with their cold powers, simbolized by the tree withering. Instead of the Hound giving away the fact that yes, water does re-freeze eventually, as a sign for the wights to resume their attack (although granted, this was a really fun scene), have the tree losing it's last leaf be the signal (cause, you know, Beauty and the Beast remastered came out this year...it's like poetry) Meanwhile Bran sees this and decides "Hey, sending a raven would be stupid cause nerds will try to use science to explain why that's bullshit" and resorts to using his magical whatevertheplotneedsthemtobe powers to like whisper Daenerys' name in the wind. Daenerys hears the whisper but it's left unclear to the viewer wether she understand the message or not, making her dramatic rescue actually dramatic instead of "oh hey, we just saw you depart from Dragonstone. That was a quick trip". plz let me be a writer in the show this year. ktxhbai.
