Watched "The Wall" for the first time, which is some kind of high stakes plinko game show. The cancer survivor and her aid worker in Africa sister got nothing. Seems like they need to keep the cool-rear end plinko board and retool everything else about it, because it's just a bunch of random bullishit.

One development I don't like on this season of Difficult People is that it's now good for a couple lines about Trump and his supporters every episode. I'd call them "jokes," but it feels like they're there to get approving nods instead of laughter. The gay therapy subplot in the second episode was pretty good and the joke about Steve Bannon's book in the latest episode was as well. Other than that, they make me roll my eyes. And I have a feeling that the upcoming season of Broad City will do the same thing, so it'll be very good but with a dash of an element of self-righteousness that it never had before.

That being said, I still recommend it highly- they're not frequent at all. Andrea Martin is the best character on the show IMO.

I'm rewatching Moonbeam City and I'm a bit pissed they cancelled it cause even with shoddy writing the show looks amazing.
The early reviews almost universally agreeing that MoonBeam City was an Archer ripoff killed a lot of interest in it, I think. You could say that about the first couple of episodes, but it became its own thing by the end. Unfortunately, I don't think anything but ridiculously high ratings could have given it a second season. I'm not sure if the animation was expensive, but having Rob Lowe, Elizabeth Banks, and Kate Mara as character voices definitely was. Still a dick move for Comedy Central to move it to a 1am timeslot on Thursday, though.

I have a bad feeling that Netflix is going to strike out on a lot of their original shows with big-name stars and fall back on Marvel properties to get a return on their billions of dollars of investment in original entertainment. There's no escape from comic books.

Agreeing on Hard Target being the best Van Damme movie by far. It's perfect in every way. Van Damme is a drifter named Chance Boudreaux with a greasy mullet and a bad Cajun accent, Wilford "Diabeetus" Brimley plays his drunken Cajun uncle who shoots flaming arrows on horseback, and the plot is The Most Dangerous Game set in New Orleans and the surrounding bayou country, with Lance Henricksen and Arnold Vosloo (Imhotep in the GOOD Mummy movie and Zartan in G.I. Joe) as the bad guys. Plus, it's John Woo John Woo-ing it up -- two guns, white doves, the usual.

Does Orphan Black get... better? I'm at the end of season 1 and although it's not a bad show, it moves pretty slowly and has some real corny parts like the cybergoths and every time they show Helena cutting herself with the fuckin seizure camera and fake Silent Hill music. Also what the hell was up with the loving subplot with the tail??

Only reason I'm asking is because I've seen multiple people saying S1 is one of the best, which is not very encouraging. I don't mind wading through rough parts to get to the good parts, but ideally it should be worth it.

Again, it's not that it's bad, it just doesn't strike me as anything special outside of the main gimmick of one person playing 5 characters (which is admittedly still really well-executed). I've seen a lot of passion surrounding the show and I'm not anywhere near there yet myself.

How the gently caress does it move slowly? By episode 2 you have someone who realizes they stole the identity of a cop and have to stall to figure out how not get busted. If you aren't hooked by episode 3 of season 1, you will never give a poo poo about the show.\

edit:

Hard Target is amazing.

fun trivia fact: the amazing boat chase sequence at the end of Face/Off was originally planned to be the finale of Hard Target, but they couldn't afford to do it.

And after that there are like 5 episodes of basically the same things happening over and over. Thanks for the weirdly aggressive answer though.

I didn't mean to be agressive, I just meant that if it doesn't hook you early, it never will. That was the hook. You saw it. If that's not your thing, that's completely fair. I got bored at the beginning of s3 because it didn't have any of the momentum of the previous seasons. So honestly, if season 1 isn't hooking you it only gets worse. I loved s1, and I just couldn't give a poo poo by s3.

I think it picks up a bit more in season two, but I was hooked by the pilot, personally.

Season three and four get weird but I still dug them. The characters and Maslany's acting was more than engaging enough for me to forgive the convoluted poo poo.

Final season somehow managed to tie it all together and deliver imho a satisfying ending. Should have been a two parter with the second to last ep, tho.

But yeah if you watched like all of season one and didn't get into it that's cool, may not be your vibe.

Anyone else been watching the Jim Jefferies show? It has some rough edges but some of the segments are pretty loving amazing. Jim's ability to make really simple analogies that point out how ridiculous something is always impresses me.

Is Comedy Central content available on any streaming services at all or is it one of the few remaining things that cable companies clutch dearly to?

They’re on Sling TV, but I think that’s it. Viacom has proven to be unwilling to depackage their channels which means that the providers generally have to pick between offering Viacom channels or Disney channels and since most people keep cable subscriptions for sports they go with Disney. Sling offers a Disney option or a Viacom option, I went with Viacom because I could give a gently caress about ESPN.

I like it, and I like Jim Jefferies, but for some bizarre reason it annoys me when he constantly does the lean back and talk thing. There is no reason it should bother me but it does.

As far as streaming, I watch it on CC.com and the Comedy Central app. But no, they yanked all their CC stuff off Hulu and put it on their own site which somehow makes Hulu's interface look amazing.

Yeah, that’s what I did. An amazing lead performance, even in multiple roles, just couldn’t save the show for me. I liked maybe one other character on the show and the plot didn’t grab me at all and that’s probably putting it nicely. I hope Maslany gets roles on shows or in movies I’m interested in eventually though because she’s really good.

I actually really like what they're doing with the Trump jokes. They're mostly asides about an exaggerated Trump world that the self centered characters move on from immediately, because they don't really care beyond how it affects their day.

My experience with Jefferies, admittedly a long time ago, is that "pointing out how ridiculous something is" means moaning about Political Correctness and how "feminists aren't actually about equality, I'm better at equality because I treat people the same without caring about their genitals" and poo poo like that, interspersed with liberal use of rape jokes and misogynist language. I do remember liking some of his jokes and those of his simple analogies that weren't massively lovely. Has he... gotten better?
