In addition to some being...behind the times...having multiple organizations like this working independently creates or widens security gaps with everyone not being on the same page in a given set of circumstances. One central organization that concentrates on cyber security will, theoretically, take it seriously and it can have units that work with the existing branches to give them the best-practices that can then be tailored to the individual circumstances instead of everyone tripping over their own dicks one step at a timd. i didn't realize there was such a disconnect between organizations in the different branches that ostensibly have the same mission which was, frankly, really loving dumb of me

I'm a Turku local so when I heard the news about the attack I went downtown like an idiot because I wanted to make sure my friends are safe (they were). Took a bunch of photos of the aftermath and noticed that my usual place was the only one that was open downtown. So I spent three hours bullshitting with the bartender while journalists kept calling me. I think ABC wanted to interview me live but I was at the time already drunk as poo poo so I didnt give an interview. The Finnish cops just announced they're investigating the knife attack as terrorism.

It's a good move and I'm pretty excited about it.

I think you're misunderstanding what happened. CYBERCOM did not become a new branch of military service, it was just elevated from a sub-unified command to a full unified combatant command. All of the people there will still be soldiers, sailors, airmen, or marines. It's just now CYBERCOM will report directly to the national command authority instead of having to work though STRATCOM. The big immediate impacts will be in resourcing and planning timelines. However, in the longer term I fully expect CYBERCOM to morph into something like SOCOM which has its own special acquisitions and personnel regulations that make it almost like a separate military service branch.

Finnish police: Main suspect in Turku attack is 18-year-old Moroccanquote:The main suspect, an 18-year-old Moroccan man, remains hospitalised in critical condition after being shot in the hip by police. Police took four other individuals into custody overnight. I don't think the whole thing went down as the rear end in a top hat expected: apparently before he got shot by the cops, he got beaten with chairs, baseball bats, and metal pipes by bystanders and chased down by a 70-year old man. Don't mess with Turku.

Right. The cyber commands of the individual branches already had a connection to cybercom; now that cybercom as a whole is elevated to a cocom it becomes a little more independent and recognized

i talked to my step dad earlier today. he's a trump supporter still. "trump is not a nazi and the mainstream media is just against him and they need to be torn down!" was his basic message. so i asked him "well, you believe fox news when they say obama is a kenyan muslim socialist who founded ISIS and wants to take over the US and destroy it by declaring martial law and implement sharia law all while his secretary of state is covering for a child sex ring at a pizza shop and all of this is funded by one jewish guy, but suggesting trump might be a white supremacist or at the very least too dumb to know he is one is a bit too far?" "but all that stuff about obama is true!" old people are loving dense.

It really steams me because the guy still came over in like, October of 1946 to NY, raised a family, and sworked his way to an executive spot at the utility company. My parents ensured that I got an awesome liberal arts education by encouraging me to attend Jesuit-run schools from Pre-K all the way through my Master's program. These are the same loving people who yelled at me because the cover of my Warhammer Rule book had Templar's Crosses on it, as it was a Nazi symbol. They're not stupid people, but they've been unbelievably suckered in by Murdoch-owned media properties and exert no critical thinking if it goes against their information venue of choice. In the last 9 years they've done complete 180s from who they used to be, mostly I believe, because a black president broke their brains. Here's a great essay by Ronnie's UN Ambassador as to why Moral Equivalence is a bullshit justification for anything; especially Nazi's openly marching in your streets. I read this to my Masonic Lodge this past week, and a lot of those guys have similar political standings as my family. The St. Ronald name recognition helped spark some conversation on the matter, so if any one else needs to do some convincing, I strongly encourage it. https://imprimis.hillsdale.edu/the-myth-of-moral-equivalence/ e: tablet posting is hard. This is the bubble people live in and why Trump will never go below 25-30% approval.
