Best practice I've encountered and follow in current projects is keep a development branch where all the development work goes into, and where you branch out of and merge back for separate features being developed by sub groups. You merge with the main branch only for critical bug fixes and for new version releases.
None of this is even close to what they are saying.

This is how we do it. And from time to time you maybe need to merge the dev branch into your feature branch

Totally agree man, Git Flow is good. In my experience, what I described works better IF you have great management and great talent. The irony here is CIG seems to be implying they do what I described, which I support. But in reality, I've seen plenty of evidence that they're all working in disparate long-lived branches wthout any thought given to integrating those branches into an actual product. For starters, are you telling me planetary tech and moons are all integrated when the moons still have placeholder textures? Good one CIG, yeah I trust ya, 3.0 just around the corner right?

I maintain with extreme vigilance that working in long-lived feature branches is a recipe for utter failure. For those who don't know, a feature is made up stories. Healthy agile means One story = One branch. When the code work is done, working, and ready to integrate, it should be merged back to your "main" branch (usually called "develop"), and any merge conflicts must be resolved BEFORE that story is marked as "completed."

had to step back for a while because I was just too hyped and couldn't stand the wait. basically i just want to know, do we have a real release date for CIG's bankruptcy filing yet?

Healthy is frequent single-feature pull requests and master merges with tags on deploys

Healthier is taking a step back and seeing if anything can sanely be broken into submodules with their own repositories instead of forcing everyone to constantly pull thousands of commits from the singular repository I'm sure they're using, but I'll grant that that's probably a lot harder in a game client than it is for an enterprise app

That said, how much do you want to bet that client code and server code is in different folders but the same repository at CIG

None.
It has amateurish attempts at recreating what already exists as fully working and easily integrated modules.

I can understand that CIG confuses the two because they're very similar concepts.

The problem with Derek is that he does great and plays along and is really chummy and seems to not be being old usenet Derek. But then something happens.

It could be some random post. Some errant comment. Some misjudged angle that just happens to rub him the wrong way.

The bristles come out. Then people go bonkers and the fangs come out. The vicious attitude people have always associated him with once more is on full display. Usually people who were supporting him go "Uh... whoa, calm it down.." but can't, and others scream "see I told you so, he always does this!" And ultimately what ends up happening is that for every inch of goodwill he's built up, he breaks down.

Sometimes it ends in a ban, sometimes he can calm down on his own, but you never know which thing will blow up the bomb. Will you be the one who accidentally pulled the Jenga piece that caused the uproar? Will people hate you for getting Derek upset, or will people go after him?

I don't think I've ever seen an Internet personality with so much... force? Behind him. I just hope that we can stop eating our own again, and move on and continue to monitor Star Citizen and other train wrecks. We nearly made it to GamesCom or whatever it is. Have patience!

Also I feel that unless a backer is conned in by a friend from some sort of referral process unaware, I don't think backers quite deserve the concept of being "innocent chumps in need of rescue."

That time passed around November of last year. At this point they pretty much deserve everything CR dishes out to them. There will still be smart ones, but I think we've reached peak "scam realization" by the general public.

Trying to set off the bomb is right up there with spite pledging and ~dreams~ posts in the pantheon of Star Citizen lols.
