This isn't really morrowind related but elder scrolls online is cheap as piss at the moment and I've heard it's much improved since launch and playable single player, is this true or is it just "good for what it is"

good for what it is

it has a ton of free weekends where you can try it out, I personally loving hated it. the whole point of TES games is to become an unstoppable demigod, but mmo's can't let everyone do that, so no one can

imagine skyrim if the entire world was leveled loot

And the combat is worse than skyrim.

Edit: the combat is worse than every Elder Scrolls game.

I bought ESO at launch, hated it, recently bought the Morrowind expansion, and struggled through the Morrowind main quest. I enjoyed the story and the updated visuals, but the combat is awful and all the MMO systems are even worse. I wish there was a story mode that stripped out all that so I could just mindlessly wander around seeing cool poo poo and getting more lore.

On the subject of Morrowind online, if you can I'd recommend everyone give tes3mp a go. I'm playing it with a friend who's always been keen to play Morrowind but has never been able to get past the dated graphics and old school RPG mechanics, and it's absolutely fantastic.

Despite that the servers can support silly numbers of people the world and quests are synced for all players so it's more of a co-op RPG than an MMO. It can lead to some weird stuff if you let it, like one player completing a quest and another player turning it in immediately on the other side of the map, but there's not really a way around it without some serious modification. How can multiple groups do the egg poachers quest? Instanced world outside of towns? Eugh.

The only features missing that have been really noticeable are custom spells and potions not being saved properly, so they're lost if you leave the server and other players can't see potions you make, but that's supposed to be in the next version. Apparently it was planned for the end of this month but I've been keeping an eye on the Github and if it is they're keeping quiet about it.

I think this is a great way to keep a mp version of morrowind balanced. Otherwise people would go full sorcerer and cast a 100% blind spell on new players that lasts 2 years or something. And alchemy can be easily exploited.

That's a fair point. The only reason I've noticed it is that there's a few spells conspicuously absent, like a 100pt unlock spell, that I'd have definitely made by now.

I think this ties in to what I said about it working better as a coop RPG than an MMO. MMO Morrowind is a completely different game, coop Morrowind is almost perfect. Considering how well it works and how much fun it's been I'm even more disappointed and surprised Bethesda haven't done it yet.

E: Something that wouldn't work that I've just thought about though; I'm playing it with one other person, and they're using heavy armour and two handed swords, while I'm going light and medium armour and blunt. I'm pretty much acting as a guide so I try and make sure we get a roughly equal number of artifact quality gear, but if the game was primarily single player but allowed you to hop into other games that system probably wouldn't work and you'd have to do every quest twice to actually progress both peoples games.

you can enforce identical modlists so all it would take is a server to require a rebalance mod

my favorite part is how openmw and tes3mp for years refused to use any bethesda code or formulas because they didn't want to get sued. back then there was no chance of that, but now that its close to done and actually really fun i'm sure bethesda is combing through the code constantly trying to find ways to sue them

I can see it now: people ignoring the main questline and rushing all the pieces of daedric armor. Caldera would constantly be filled to the brim with would-be alchemists stealing the alchemy set in the mages guild tower, and rich vagrants sleeping on the floor of the Orc mansion, waiting for a chance to sell 200 lbs of poo poo to Creeper.

E: ^ I forgot server-wide mods were a thing in tes3mp, that would actually work. I have a feeling that custom spells and potions were left out while the developers try and figure a way to make custom spells and potions not broken as gently caress.

Playing Morrowind again has made me think about how you have so many extra clothing and armour slots and how you can wear clothes under armour. The only modern game I can think that did that was Dragon's Dogma and it was brilliant. I hope they bring it back in a future Elder Scrolls, but it's probably not going to happen looking at the trajectory the series is currently taking with regards to complexity. Maybe no one else enjoys playing fantasy barbie dress-up like I do.

So a question for people that have played tes3mp:
would visual mods like the ones in Morrowind Overhaul (graphics extender, texture updates, etc) still work if I had them installed and tried to play mp on a server that didn't have them? Are those sorts of mods client-side?

It only compares esps. And sometimes only the filenames if the server hasn't got hashes to check against.

Either the pastebin guide or the STEP guide. Not quite as easy but more customizable due to their modular nature.

I use the pastebin guide with STEP shaders, imperial texture replacer and a newer body replacer on top, which works pretty well.

fake edit: phoneposting correction

E:
Oh and I think I replaced some of the wood textures by ones from the wood retexture plugin (linked on STEP), specifically cherry wood and whichever is the one used on ships a lot. (use NifSkope to figure out which textures bother you). I might put it into a pack to install on top of the pastebin guide, because some of those textures really are kinda garish. (though they are the same ones as in MGSO IIRC, so)

Full disclosure, it does take a few hours to do. Unfortunately there's nothing better than MGSO if you can't/don't want to find the time.

tes3mp is going to increase the longevity of morrowind by 20 years. I played for a few hours today.

- my friend and I were in Argktnghand, my dark elf picking a lock deep in the dwemer ruins, my friend, a Khajit holding a glass blade and a torch, watching for others; the whole scene felt like real high fantasy. it was awesome.
- I distracted Archmage Trebonius in talk while she looted his bedroom. the specifics of how the game works with multiple players is subtle and changing, but simple shenanigans like this could be pulled off (as well as e.g. fencing items between each other to hide their source)
- we nearly got our asses kicked in some deserted ancestral tomb
- we realized we needed to hotkey potions because opening up the inventory doesn't pause the game anymore, and died to cave rats (rip)
- a dozen high ordinators were spawned into balmora, descending on the city to maintain the peace after some players started attacking others indiscriminately

It's the best loving thing there ever was or ever will be.

There's a server, Club Maiq, which has a handful of people on it most of the time. They're also the most sophisticated server since many players are working on the MP code itself, and working to create server-side scripts and mods, and the like.

It needs to be reiterated: the experience is *confusing*. The quest log is shared server-wide. People will be completing different parts of the game and it'll show up in your journal. Waiting causes the time to pass for you but not for others. Everything is real time, so you can't stop the action by opening your inventory. Custom potions aren't available for other players to pick up. Summons and enchants don't work at all. Since quest lines branch in so many ways, someone can lock you out of whatever it was you were doing (friend and I couldn't talk to Caius after retrieving the puzzle box because someone else had already killed Divayth Fyr).

But there's a germ of something in all of it, and with things that are coming down the pipeline (0.7.0 is allegedly going to have group quest logs), and just the experience itself, it makes Morrowind feel massive, mysterious, and dangerous again. I know it sounds lame, but it's true.

Praseodymi
Aug 26, 2010

Yeah, at the moment there's a lot of 'House Rules' involved making it actually playable. It's really easy to run a server if you do find someone to play with though.

Not sure how they're going to do group quest logs, at least with quests that alter the world.

No, it's an old mod that I'm surprised isn't on everyone's essential mod list, because escorts are insanely annoying bullshit without it: http://mw.modhistory.com/download-31-7625 Also search for the Guar Follower's Fix on MMH to go with it, otherwise you'll get guars like Corky randomly teleporting behind you the moment you enter Pelagiad or whatever. It uses the same rudimentary warp script as early companions, but it's never really needed to be improved on from there since it works well enough to get the NPCs from point A to B, making the only left over annoyances the few that cast AOEs (like that drat mage you take to Pelagiad) or having weak escorts die on you.
