See, with donks at least you're not ruining the utility of the car. Hell, in some cases you're enhancing it. As a counterpoint, every single car in this video has been rendered utterly useless for any sort of daily transportation. If I had an 80 car garage and unlimited money to fill it I'd definitely have a couple of donks in the mix, the only decision being which breakfast cereal/candy/beverage to theme them after.

Houston is big on donks. It's about to save their asses - the donks and a few mall crawlers will be the only things not under water in the next few days.Dogbrisket posted:How are you not familiar with a Baja Bug? I realize this isn't a VW forum but it's not like this is something obscure. They're not exactly common anymore. It's very rare for me to see any kind of ACVW, and a baja is something I might see once a year at most these days.

I mean i still think the bumper is terrible and i think somebody actually ruined a good looking baja so it is is pretty terrible. The only good thing about it is you could maybe talk him down because of that but the cb radio tells me that guy thinks thats the best bumper ever. And you might have to meet him at a model train convention. 50/50 really.

They're not a thing up here (or maybe they are, and I'm blinder than I thought), and I've literally never seen one before. Where would you even drive it? Sorry I don't like [popular thing].

I mean.. they're really not that common anymore, even in regions of the US where they can actually be used to their full potential (no idea on Canada). I grew up in the desert, and in the 80s they were loving everywhere, and still a common sight when I left in 1997. Every time I go back to visit now, they're not very common - I might see one every other time I go back. Where I live now (DFW, TX), you don't see them at all. I might see one or two a year now, and I drive a quite a bit (30k+ miles a year). I can definitely understand someone up north not ever seeing one before, especially if you're <30. They're more meant for driving on sand - beaches, dunes, etc. (they're pretty awesome)

Pretty sure I have seen that color scheme on a Baja. I bet some VW rag did one like that when Bajas were the rage. I don't think that engine cage is out of the ordinary Baja other than the mudflap situation, which makes it look off. Never seen flaps like the here in So California but we don't do inspections here beyond smog. Technically there are/were regulations on exposed tires, unenforced for the most part.

Do it the right way though with a holden and a overlander frame kit on a wagon, ute or panel van. If I had money I'd get a 1970s holden and fit an overlander drive line, even if I put donk wheels on it.

That bumper on the Baja maybe a requirement for it to be allowed on the road in Canada. Here in Australia you'd get a defect notice if you ran an open engine bay like the traditional bajas had. All the ones here have similar caged in engine bays with rear bumpers because they have to. The powers at be claim that with an exposed engine bay some one might somehow get there hand caught in the fan belt while the engine is running, or heaven forbid they might touch the hot exhaust and burn themselves. Also if a car had bumpers fitted from factory it must have bumpers of some type fitted to be road legal here. The mud flaps may be needed too as there's a minimum % of the rear tyres the needs to be covered in Aus and those Baja guards don't cover much. Some of the stuff I see that's perfectly okay in the states blows my mind. Also go easy on the guy that didn't know about swing axle suspension, it is a bit of an oddity and I don't think any cars post the 1960s had it?

Yeah, swing axle died a long time go but this is automotive insanity we should all know the basic features of the only car responsible for more bad conversions than the Fiero.

I learnt something while looking up overlanders. Ford actually had new 1971 xy falcons put into jeep chassis' as an experimental thing by 1972, by ford themselves. Didn't last because the jeep diffs were unreliable or something like that. No one ever speaks of them these days as they were so rare so they are long forgotten - except for the utes which continued on a bit and ford offered at least a lifted kit for ages. But I'm talking about sedans, wagons and panel vans ie: Ford falcon sedan - better than a baja: That's a 1970s aussie donk in waiting. (yeah I know donk just used to mean engine here in au anyway.) The holden version was by a private engineering firm, but with holden support and sold through holden dealers. They based the overlander on fitting bodies onto a modified 1973 chevy blazer chassis. After 73 (ford)-77(holden) the aussies domestics went to full unibody (except for utes), so no more body on chassis for passenger vehicles and that was the end of lifted cars. There you go, now you all know too. E: for image Fo3 fucked around with this message at 17:03 on Aug 24, 2017 |

Volvo had retracted pillars on the C70 that fire and extend upon roll over, so I'd assume that most modern convertibles have something similar at this point

I turned on "What's My Car Worth" after watching F1 Quali today. Holy poo poo is this terrible. I knew boomers had driven up muscle car prices, but drat. Also, guy driving an '89 Ferrari 458 TB says he doesn't like gated shifters. Then the '50's Corvette from Cuba that had a fiberglass front end rebuilt after an accident and a bunch of other work done. It's Cuba, so no access to the right parts. They still valued it at $100k. What the gently caress is happening here?
