Yeah I guess the only thing I'm missing right now is Kodi and a Google Play app that plays 4K, as the TV app does not and only has two channel audio, and the Xbox only plays through Youtube which I also don't believe supports 4k purchases through the store and only 2 channel audio (correct me if I'm wrong)? Another fire stick would solve the Kodi issue for much cheaper, but still missing Google Play then and I don't like having a million boxes laying around.

I have a small collection of Fire TVs, Rokus, and Chromecasts and the only devices I use day to day are the Shields. There's nothing wrong with the others, the Shield TV just does what they do better (better being subjective) and is well supported.

The games aren't bad on it either and neither is the controller it comes with for that matter. For frustration-free setup and go it is hard to beat.

This here. I still haven't pulled the trigger on a second Shield because I don't need one, but I really like the one I have in the back bedroom now.

I have two Shields (1st gen), FireTV and FireTv Stick and my wife and I both prefer the Shields. In fact I want to replace the stick with something else since it seems to struggle with 1080p stuff using Emby app.

Talk me out of buying a Shield TV...I like shiny new things too much

I have a KS8000/XBone S/Roku 3/Home Theater 5.1.2 Atmos Setup setup right now, and have generally been using the TV apps because they worked good at one time and have 4k/HDR...now they're starting to a get a little long in the tooth so I end up switching to the apps on the non 4k Roku 3 (because most stuff isn't even in 4k anyways) when they start acting up.

Now I see most of the apps on the XBox One S support 4k/HDR (Amazon,Netflix, VUDU) but is missing Google Play which I occasionally use.

Basically does the Shield work better than the XBox One S device; or is it just going to be a glorified Kodi/Google Play machine over what I already have? I do have a gaming PC with an Nvidia card so I guess I could do that in home streaming thing if it works worth a poo poo...

Nvidia game thing works great. Also streaming your Steam library from your game PC is really good too (disclaimer: the Shield is on GigE and the game PC is using a 3x3 802.11ac card so I have bandwidth to burn). The only issue I've had in regard to playing my Steam games is that sometimes the font sizing work better on monitors (which are closer) than a TV across the room.

Overall, I like the Shield. I still prefer my Apple TV (barely), and once that goes 4K with a native Amazon client, I don't think I'll be using the Shield as anything other than playing my Steam Games and a PLEX server*

* - however, even that future may be in doubt since PLEX has got a beta HW transcoder they're working on which only work on Intel for now. My Synology DS916+ went from using 98% CPU to transcode an uncompressed BluRay rip to 14% after using the beta (but there's still issues with forced subtitles that need to be addressed)

Just get the Shield, its a fantastic performer and the app ecosystem is pretty good. The only time the Xbox One S in my house gets turned on is when my girlfriend watches some of her old movies, its the only disc player left.

I signed up for DirecTV Now back when you could get the $35 'Go-Big' package promotion. The app and streaming were total garbage so I took my free Firestick and cancelled. It sound like the service has gotten a lot better so I'm considering killing cable and going back now that streaming is slightly cheaper for me.

Has anyone had any luck getting that promotional price back after cancelling? Sadly, I missed a promotional email back in June that offered to restore that price/plan. I also contacted a service rep for DTV today and they said they wouldn't honor that price or promotion anymore.

Nope. It's done. The only real discount you can get from them anymore is a $25 credit if you have ATT Wireless.

Speaking of DTV, I saw an ad on Twitter for Sunday Ticket the other day saying you can now get it without full service, just enter your address here. Well surprise surprise it's not available in my area, so curious as to whether anyone else has seen it and been told they can have it. They said it was like $100 for the season which is quite appealing as the non-US Gamepass is being done by other people this year so who knows if a dns patch is enough to get it here now.

Wayne Knight
May 11, 2006

I think the separate Sunday ticket offer is for people who can't get DirecTV for one reason or another. Like, no dish reception (big mountain in the way or something) or you live in an apartment/highrise and you can't put out a dish.

I just checked and I'm eligible, but they want $70/month or more, depending on if I want to add red zone. If you can get $100 for the whole season, you need to find a friend in an apartment. That's a crazy good deal.

Yeah I just went to the site and say 70/mo too. Maybe I misread the original ad, or it's only under specific circumstances. I'll keep my eye for it again because that's too much money to watch my bad team lose that much. I think I paid $150 for Gamepass and my friend split that with me anyway, and Gp is supposed to be better than Ticket.

I bit the bullet and tested Gamepass through AdFreeTime on Thursday for a preseason game and it worked. Here's hoping that holds into the regular season.

That's what I like to hear! I cancelled my renewal just in case it wouldn't work, and I didn't really want to mess with VPNs as it's a pain on STBs. Fingers crossed they don't turn something on on week 1. They'd be stupid to, as doing 'just enough' to protect local rights while taking Americans money who know the score has worked well for years.

Do any of the streaming services have 5.1 or plans to roll it out? I know it's harder than one would assume which is probably why it hasn't been offered yet, but I'm a big dumb baby and I like surround sound so this has been a bit of a sticking point for me.

Are you talking for live TV? I don't think so. Pretty sure they're all still Stereo Surround. I haven't heard anything about that changing.

If you mean Netflix and Hulu(non liveTV), pretty sure they both have 5.1 content.

Which built-in Smart TV OS sucks the least - Roku, WebOS, Samsung, or built-in Chromecast?

Has anyone bought a Roku TCL tv? How is the sound quality of the tv by itself?

My bedroom tv crapped itself and I am looking to getting a new one. I do not want to get a sound bar but I want at least a decent tv speaker.

I'm partial to built in chromecast, but I also understand what chromecast is, which might be a higher bar. The new Vizios with chromecast built in also have a few apps built in now that you can access without a phone/tablet: netflix, amazon, hulu, and more that I don't use.

Verizon still has a lock on everything NFL when it comes to phone streaming, no? For cord-cutting there are a different set of problems i.e. money and contracts. DTV Now hasn't ponied up yet, most likely. There are bound to be minimum rev-rec requirements with such a deal.

Yeah, I'm using my Roku. I'm actually really happy with SlingTV so far.

The DVR works well. The on demand is way better than DTVN. I get RedZone and NHL Network (hockey season is going to be a bitch since MSG requires cable).

It's also weird because DTV is so tightly in with the NFL I'd think they would want RedZone on it too since Sling and Vue have it. The only reason I'm even asking is I use ATT for my cell phone so I'd get a discount.

I just bought the 43" TCL roku tv for our guest room, and the sound is exactly like most every other panel. It's acceptable for what it is, but tinny and weak.

Very happy with the panel itself through, for the price.

The one thing I kept in my Amazon cart before dumping everything else for batteries and flashlights before the hurricane hit was a TV antenna. Boy was that a good idea!

Not used one of these leaf style ones before, but it's the first time I've had genuinely great results with indoor pickup anywhere, and all the HD channels are coming in clean and probably look better than the cable versions.

This was originally going to be for the guest bedroom as I'm not gonna pay Comcast $10 a month for a box nobody will really use, but I think I'll probably end up keeping it for failover and get another one ordered.

God bless OTA and the crazy amount of Spanish channels we receive.
