Gojira, Rodan, The X from Outer Space, and a bunch of others just immediately leap out to me as the monsters explicitly being a metaphor for the characters' repressed sexual desires. I had assumed that SMG meant pornographic in the colloquial sense of "excessive". If you're using pornographic to refer to a movie dealing with sexuality at all then you should probably take a break.

The MUTOs are a distorted, but more truthful embodiment of the nuclear family. The effect, because they are such mammoth figures who ostensibly shouldn't be perceived or masked as anthropomorphic, becomes that they are actually more expressive, more compelling, less emotionally limited than the actual Brodys. It's simultaneously the American dream of how the nuclear family depends upon one another and flourishes, but presented as a nightmare with apocalyptic consequences.

Their family is depicted as a force that will destroy everything else in the world for their own short prosperity. Also, they literally use a ticking nuclear bomb to warm their children, seeing a weapon that would inevitably destroy them as the perfect foundation for their family. And someone, probably SMG, brought this up before, but a big underlying theme of Godzilla 2014 is the beauty and terror of the idea of true, universal family. A man has to reunite with his estranged father, who he has probably good reasons to dislike due to him going off running after crazy echolocating monsters rather than being a father, but in turn has to leave his own son behind in the process. The MUTOs would destroy everything for their family, while as they share a glance amid the ruins of San Francisco, Brody and Godzilla realise that they have a commonality, that the human soldier and the ancient monster are part of an extended family of Earth's inhabitants who must learn to coexist if they are to survive, to unite against those who would destroy all seeking their own gain. And I've said a bunch of times, but I really love the 'naturalistic' approach to Kaiju in the more recent movies, like they've taken inspiration from nature documentaries, taken Walking With Dinosaurs to its most awesomely ridiculous conclusion. They can be allegorical beings and monsters of myth, but also like animals that could exist in the world, at least before you think about it for five seconds. People go to zoos for a reason, animals are interesting and we see both familiar and strange things in them, and Kaiju are animals at massive scale to make it all the more clear.

This carries over fairly directly into Shin Godzilla as well.

(The otaku character is Kensuke, and he's portrayed positively, being one of the few characters who actually gives a drat about Shinji.) Shinji is characterized by his immaturity and his powerlessness, and is repeatedly objectified and used by the adults of the show, including (and especially) his guardians and those who profess to have his best interests at heart. Shinji is not hateful but pathetic.

Anno received death threats over Death & Rebirth, after the series had already ended for some time. More specifically, he received death threats because the second half of Death & Rebirth is basically a teaser for End of Evangelion and people were mad because they wanted more Eva. (It was also an outlier -- most feedback for the show and the movies was positive.) He was famously depressed, but for personal reasons. Similarly, "Shinji is an otaku caricature" is pretty much just uninformed nonsense that people repeat across the internet.

Evangelion is a beautiful cipher. I first read the manga when I was like, 12, and since then I've come back to it after years apart and each time I get a different thing out of it. Like, when I was 12 I was totally into the violence and all of the religious and psychological ephemera (which is really just cool symbolism that they added to the top layer of poo poo), and since then I've seen people talk about it as a criticism of otaku culture (which is the most ironic reading, not because it's wrong, but because of all of the awful, awful merchandising that's come out of it), a man dealing with depression through art, an anti-war polemic, a story about generational clash, and a (possibly) incidental commentary on spooky cults that steal people's humanity that literally premiered less than 6 months after the Aum Shinrikyo sarin attacks (apparently they had to change the story a bit because it hit too close to home and were worried about censorship). and it will never end because the fourth movie will never come out edit: ok i just learned that there was a seismic event in Australia in 1993 that was for a while unexplained, and someone floated the theory that, since the event happened close to a farm owned by the Aum Shinrikyo, who were known to be working on developing powerful weapons, the event was caused by a nuclear weapons test attempted by the Aum, so now I want a new Godzilla movie where the monster that Godzilla fights is a giant abomination made up of various animals from the Australian Outback that were mutated by nuclear weapons owned by a doomsday cult. "Worried about censorship" barely even covers it. You know why episodes 25 and 26 are as weird as they are? Because the original versions were basically End of Evangelion lite and the TV station was like "haha nope," so Anno and company had to scramble to come up with something to replace them.

I think a lot of it is a supposedly typical 'Teenage boy pilots mech built by long-lost father' plot (I have no idea if this is actually typical. Though oddly enough it ties into Brody) and actually looking at what kind of parent would abandon their child and then have them pilot a superweapon. (A really lovely one, it turns out!) Not to mention how hosed up the situation would have to be to have teenagers fighting wars in giant machines in the first place. Shinji starts out maladjusted because he's been seemingly abandoned by his parents and foisted off on apathetic relatives in the middle of the apocalypse, then gets worse from generous heaps of PTSD. The closest Western counterpart thematically I can think of is The Venture Bros, funnily enough, and that's mostly because of the contest for Worst Animated Dad.
