How well does the Joule handle longer, higher-temp cooks like pork shoulder? Every time I do something like that with my Anova I feel like it’s noticeably closer to breakdown; The lower, stainless steel shroud no longer connects securely with the upper, plastic body and the impeller shaft is drifting further and further out of alignment with the heating coil and lower body, leading to lots of rattling.

I need better coffee in my life Not sure if "thermal drip" is the same as regular drip coffee, but after our last coffeemaker poo poo the bed, we invested in this one. It's right near your budget limit, but it has the biggest carafe we could find (we drink a lot of coffee), is very attractive, and was just under the height of our kitchen cabinets so it stores nicely on the counter. Makes some pretty drat good coffee, comes with a reusable filter, and the "bold" setting on it makes some strong coffee too.

I need better coffee in my life https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NMJD6DE/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Has served me well for a few years for when I need to make drip instead of espresso. There are a few size and models, most of which are edging just over your budget but are great if you're willing to throw in an extra $20. Note that if you need better coffee in your life it is going to be primarily via beans and a grinder, not necessarily a better drip.

Is the KitchenAid Pro 600 still the recommended stand mixer? I saw they have a mini model on the market now.

They make excellent bread, they do everything else you'd want a stand mixer to do, they're built to last in a way that KitchenAids haven't been since the '60s, and bowl access is much more convenient.

Kitchenaid Pro is the best for most people, especially since I think it's $270 right now at Costco. When I got my tilty KA six years ago it was $200 and the pro was $450 or so. Don't get the the mini, it's a ripoff in terms of power/capacity/price Of course if you're gonna make bread every day I'd go with Symmetry's recommendation since he's a Loaf Whisperer Steve Yun fucked around with this message at 05:41 on Aug 20, 2017 |

If memory of my old tv purchase lines up, the C at the end often indicates "made for Costco" or something. I don't know if that has any implications regarding difference. Appreciate the info! Be aware that unless they changed something, the Costco branded 6qt use a weird bowl so you can't buy glass bowls, beater blades or the heated bowl accessory (although they made the ice cream maker so it fits multiple models). It didn't matter for me, I've had a KA Costco branded mixer for a while and loved it.

I got a takoyaki pan thing and I haven't tried it yet. I know they sell traditional packets of "dough" batter but I'm curious if anyone has familiarity with or knowledge of a dashi-less batter recipe (my wife is not fond...) I don't mind if it's a sweet batter, a savory batter, or a neutral one. I want to do some variation "tako-pa" stuff. If there's a better thread, sorry... I just figured since it all hinged around the takoyaki pan...

I picked up a cast iron pan for making "plättar" at a boot fair, gonna need to take the angle grinder and steel brush to it however: And a buncha old style looking ice cream sundae glasses. And other non food related stuff. 10 bucks for the glasses and another 10 for the pan.

Induction burners -- Worth the $60? I was thinking of picking one up once I move into my new apartment. There's an electric stove there, but I seem to hear lots of people rave about this one: https://www.amazon.com/Secura-8100M...2XY3ET1CV01M0AE

You want at least 1800W. Mrs. Squashy once bought a double burner advertised at 1800W, not realizing that it was 1800 SHARED between the two. It's super weak; don't fall for that one. EDIT: I like this one for $55 avantco-icbtm-20-countertop-induction-range-cooker-120v-1800w

For induction burners, how important is it that cookware matches the coil's diameter?

rgocs posted:For induction burners, how important is it that cookware matches the coil's diameter? Fairly important, but it's nearly as important with electric coil burners, in fact I would say it's even more important with an electric coil because of how slowly they heat up and because you are more likely to be using thick steel cookware with induction which helps diffuse and hold heat better than aluminium.

I've been making more pies than usual and so I've been looking at getting a small food processor to make it easier to make crusts. Are the ~$50 mini processors worth looking at, or would I be better served saving up for something bigger?

Doughs need a lot of torque and a cheap processor will either get stuck or burn out its motor quickly. Look at a Cuisinart processor, maybe a small one like the DLC-10SY, it will have enough power to handle most things and it will last.

Steve Yun posted:Might as well be here, I am curious to know as well since I have been putting off buying a larger refrigerator Okay then. Crossposting from PYF. My parents are looking for a new refrigerator. Needs to be at least 69" H x 35" W x 30" D, side-by-side style, with an ice maker, one produce drawer, and one meat drawer. Also needs to work and be good, but doesn't need to be fancy. Budget is around $1000 or less if we can manage. We just had a carton of milk go sour, so we may have to buy soon. Any help would be appreciated.

Three things: Sales on appliances usually kick off around Labor Day weekend, so if you can hold out a week you might be able to get some better deals - or make sure they have a price match that goes out that far. If you're set on a side-by-side, Consumer Reports recommends the Samsung RS25J500DSR, which is in your price range and has the features you're after. It won't be as energy efficient as models with a top/bottom separation, of course, but it fits. The RS25H5121SR scored slightly better (78 vs 76), mostly on ease of use, but cost 600 bucks more; on the other hand, that might be worth the difference to you, especially if they go on sale before new models arrive in October. Last, Samsung and LG are generally in the top rankings for reliability according to CR, but in the case of side-by-sides Samsung is in the middle of the pack.
