Calcutta's a pretty long trip for fighters, even from the forward bases in Burma, and those have been getting hit often enough that I'm not sure they're operational. One of the quirks of the game is that it sets every air group to max range by default, and because bombers almost always have a higher max range than fighters, that means they'll be outlasting their escorts unless you rein them in manually. In a game with so many fiddly details like WitP, it's really easy to forget to do this 100% of the time. The good news is there's a "set all groups at this base to these settings" button, so at least you don't have to reset the range one group at a time.

In SH4 I infiltrated a Japanese harbor, dodging the warship patrolling the entrance, and sank the merchant ships at dock.

On my way out, out of curiosity, I crept past at periscope depth to see what the warship patrolling the entrance was.

Shokaku-class aircraft carrier.

That's when my patrol went from good to great.

If I remember correctly there is a feature you can exploit with the bombing height limit (provided that you've trained your bombers in ASW warfare) that can make your planes really, really good against subs.

Train them bombers asap.

This game is really weird. There's this bizarre pattern with submarines; you can go weeks with almost no sub activity whatsoever, and then suddenly a bunch of subs are doing something all on the same day. Seems to happen with Grey's subs as well as with the AI. It's at a point now where I'm convinced there's some kind of bug or unintended behavior going on. Like, subs all cycle in and out of supply at the same time or something.

Maybe the AI is somehow hindered by the arcane logic of WitP.

The Allies sent a submarine to Tokyo harbor, but did not set it to attack. It sat in Tokyo harbor for two weeks, parked at a distant dock and getting refueled. One day a Japanese officer appears with a telegram from the USN stating "You're supposed to sink the Japanese ships." The American sub leaves the dock, slips below the waves, and the man who delivered the letter, the IJA Officer smiles

Yes, Yes it is. I have planes there on ASW, but this is night. There are also at least two ASW naval units in the area - but for some reason you can't tell them to patrol the bay - I think its counted as ground when setting zones, but the AI has got its subs in there somehow!

As for logistics, I have having trouble moving fuel and oil around - oil is the killer, as every ship on that is one less moving fuel.

I'm coping at the moment, but I think the US subs are going to start biting deep soon. Then the game gets really interesting!

By 1943 you would expect the Germans to have taken control of all these ships years ago. I know there was a collaborator government that was then replaced with direct military rule (like in Vichy France), but did the Germans just let them have even more important craft? Also why did they not attempt to sail to Sweden? It's not like its a long voyage.
