This week's free rotation is going to steal all my gems and gold. I played Sylvanas once and instantly liked her so I bought her and then I played Arthas and instantly liked him so I'll probably blow my last gold on getting him. Then I will have at least 3 of every hero kind except specialists where I only have two. Still feels like a decent foundation to build on.

Those are great buys so no problem. Of all the heroes that aren't overpowered Sylvanas is the most surprising, she breaks such important rules for such little downside.

Oh hey I didn't realize that KT's global ult Shadow Fissure only has a 15 second CD. Hits like the truck full of liquid nitrogen from Terminator 2, too. Now I'm super duper torn between the DnD buddy and the upgrade to Shadow Fissure because they're both so loving good. Also, with a full Phylactery, KT has pretty decent sustain. Also, with some more practice, I'm back to picking the ice spike. It's hilarious to drop a max-range spike, chain it, then chain an enemy hero that woefully underestimated the range you have with that combo. Part of the problem is people don't really know what solo-laning should be. Sylvanas can probably tie the lane against any hero in lane, but that's still a positive for the other team, because she's so much more effective with the rest of her team actually pushing and she can't really force her opponent in lane to actually miss any soak assuming her opponent is competent. Xul is really good at wave clear and is one of the best if not the best double soakers in the game, but he isn't great at punishing a lane opponent. Best solo-laners are probably Sonya, Zagara, and Dehaka, but Dehaka and Zagara are there because they don't lose the lane against very many heroes and they transition well into off-laners (or sieger in Zagara's case) in the mid to late game.

Solo laners and specialists are usually distinct from eachother. xul and sylvanas can both be zoned out of their wave fairly easily by many bullies, same as heroes like azmo, zeebo, etc. All these specialists are optimally used by enhancing the push of your team, especially by strong waveclear rotations into multiple lanes. Some of them are mediocre to viable at holding a solo lane, but any good solo laner is happy to smash them.

I'd say Sonya, Artanis, Leoric, Arthas, Thrall, Chen, Rexxar, and Zagara are all good solo laners. Sonya is probably the best because she doesn't lose many matchups and turns into a self-sustaining monster late game. It's basically who wins rock paper scissors. Basically, good solo laners are sturdy and have good sustain, have a threatening ability that you want to keep distance from, and have OK or better wave clear. Your job is to bully the other person so that have to stay close to their base. Since ammo is limited, absorbing exp from their fort is limited too, plus their front gate/towers will take some siege damage. And if you get a kill or force them to base, they enemy team will be forced to rotate or lose a wave of exp + possibly a tower or more. And Dehaka is a good solo laner but he is good at so many things that I consider him broken and first-ban material.

To this day I miss Zagara's regen on Creep. It was probably far too strong, and she's overall much more fun and varied now. Goddamn though it made her such a great lane bully. Also speaking of Zag, I discovered just last night that if you set Banelings to quick cast, you can hold Q to launch them all ASAP. Which is obvious in retrospect but for some reason it never occurred to me.

A Zagara will destroy her keep in minutes if left unchecked. I mean a Zag left alone will usually do that but she'll have a great time vs Syl. A hero like Sonya can just destroy the wave with whirlwind and go gank other lanes on smaller maps while Sylvanas plinks away at creeps before she hits 7. Sylvanas is very squishy with no proper laning sustain and needs to expose herself a fair amount if she wants to clear a wave fast enough before 7, her only saving grace is being able to slow down the enemy's push safely with her dagger. She's still a ranged hero with a decent escape so she definitely isn't the worst at solo laning, but she usually isn't the best choice a team has.

This is a pretty weird thing to say honestly considering we just got two big name Warcraft heroes in short succession. Like, there's always some variation of this that crops up every time a new Overwatch hero is slated to come out but OW characters are still a minority compared to every other Blizzard property in HotS except for the Lost Vikings, and it's not like they're going to stop milking their other properties for material in the meantime.
