Grappled a flamethrower advent with Mox in the first mission you get to use him, and shot the guy from close range to finish him off.

The extra turn that bought me did NOT give me time to find and shoot another one. Holy poo poo, gently caress these timers. I may just bite the bullet and turn on that "double timers" thing. (but that means sitting through the drat tutorial again... if only because I refuse to have the game bitch at me about it supposedly being my first time every loving time I start a new campaign... when does it stop doing that, anyway?)
How does one turn on double timers? I have his accessories pack, or rather had. I made something like sixteen characters out of boredom while waiting for the expansion to drop and it doesn't even import the vanilla character pool :xd:

Edit: Got the imports working by making export groups in vanilla then copying them over from the save folder.

When you go to start a new game, there should be an option something along the lines of "advanced options" somewhere in the "start new game" setup, and it'll have stuff like choosing which resistance HQ you start at, extending mission and Avatar timers, Beta Strike to dramatically increase everybody's HP (god, that'd make the Lost SUCK, I think), and more.

A couple guys already gave you good answers, but gently caress it: play Xcom with the Enemy Within xpack, because it's good and fun and the story ties directly in to Xcom 2. In fact, if you want the full grognard experience, I'd play Enemy Within on Ironman (meaning you only have one save) and when you lose, count that the end of the game. Because Xcom 2 starts off assuming you lost.

But more than that: EW is a really fun game on its own merits, so long as you like the :xcom: vibe where some days you eat a lot of poo poo. But xcom 2 has a bunch of quality of life improvements, and going backwards will probably really aggravate you.

No. AWC was totally removed and the extra perks completely reworked. Now every soldier has 3 and you can buy them with a global pool of points you get for things like flanking shots or killing a Chosen.

How do you deal with the assassin? She has massive move range and I feel the only way I can kill her without taking tons of damage is when she does something dumb like using her grenade. Maybe I should just clump up my troops so she'll do it more often?

If she keep using her standard melee attack I am toast. I was also surprised that stun grenade doesn't work on her (or the lost).

Xcom points are points you can use on any soldiers. Generally i'll use them when a soldier has 10 soldier points but needs 11. If i have an additional xcom point, i can spend it there.

Unfortunately, the first mission is only sometimes a resistance soldiers one.

I've been running a few Legendary games and it seems like handling that first retaliation with the Chosen on the non-resistance soldiers version requires you to have the faction soldier and probably one other Corporal healthy and in the mission. Drag 'em out even if they're tired!

Holy poo poo lost towers went from super hard mission to super easy if you take a reaper with you. If you use remote start on the explosive generators on the boss battle, the damage somehow goes from 6-8 to 16-32 damage. You can basically kill the boss in 2 rounds.

Also, you get 15 xcom points for killing Julian, pretty good incentive to do the mission if you have it enabled.

If she keep using her standard melee attack I am toast. I was also surprised that stun grenade doesn't work on her (or the lost).

I've never beaten her without someone getting at least dazed once. But I've beaten her every time she's shown up, albeit on normal difficulty. I think I stumbled on a semi-consistent way to deal with her, but we'll see how it holds up in her house.

Every time she's gone down it's been in the space of a turn, or even just a couple of attacks. She'll dive in, swing, then run for sight-blocking cover. She's got a huge move range, so keep big open areas with little full cover between your team and her, so she has to spend it all to get up to you and get away. Use your back line to keep eyes behind you and around nearby walls, so there's not enough fog close to her targets that she can get away cleanly.

So she charges up, attacks, and bounces back to the cover she came from. If I'm positioned right, I can chase her down at this point, because she only had enough move to break line of sight by a couple of tiles. Maybe use a battle scanner to confirm, though I've not had the chance. Then a combination of grenades, snipers, run-and-guns and whatever else is handy to burn her hp down.

(thanks for the stun grenade tip, that would've been embarrassing)
