I'd  but the Leafs still have Matt Martin making $2M for the next three seasons so

Eh, at least Martin is a good shot suppression player on top of being a shithead. There are worse ways for a GM to blow $2m.

There was actually a decent amount of discussion over whether or not Martin actually gets defensive results last year amongst the usual Leafs suspects, since the dude visibly sucks.

Results were mixed because defensive stats are still terrible but the gist of it was Martin might be a better suppressor than many 4th liners but he still gets crushed playing against non-grinders, and he's so poor offensively it's hard to see the usefulness anyway because any meagre chances the opposition get are still putting them ahead of his sorry rear end. If you can't suppress better players and the players you can suppress still outshoot you what's the point?

There's absolutely worse 4th liners in the league but given the other players the Leafs have under contract there's still no excuse to play a guy like Martin.

Yeah it was always a screwy situation because MSG actually owns the land, it's not just something they lease from the city or whoever. The city would have to imminent domain it and theoretically pay out the market cost for a big chunk of real estate in the middle of Manhattan. The city was threatening to not renew the use permit that let's MSG use the arena as a sports stadium, concert venue, etc, but I think most people figured it was political posturing by people who likely wouldn't even be in office by the time the current agreement was up.

Of course Dolan being Dolan they were pushing hard for a permanent use permit and permanent extension of the deal that exempts them from paying taxes on the land (can't remember why they got that tax deal in the first place)

i mean back then moving to jersey was a bigger deal than now (the giants did it, the jets were about to do it, etc)

also we had this discussion already about how that's why they're the designated road team during outdoor games in the city

There was a push to make Penn Station pretty again which would mean tearing down MSG and building a fancy pants building there again. It seems to have been more about "Penn Station used to be so pretty we should make it that way again!" rather than increasing capacity for the trains which is apparently the real issue.

So some city politicians only extended the use permit for 10 years instead of indefinitely like MSG wanted and were making a bunch of noise about forcing MSG to move, but that died down and I think they're just workign around it at this point
