I'm glad to hear that, I didn't scroll over the spoiler though so don't worry! I have definitely seen a GIF of maniacal laughing that I think is from the finale. I just watched the episode where L confronts Light and Misa appears and it seems like Light has won but then Misa is arrested on suspicion of being the second Kira. Even though the rule that forfeiting a Death Note erases all your memories of it is set up far in advance it feels frustratingly like it was only invented for this express purpose especially as regaining your Death Note restores all your memories immediately. Like why? Other than if you needed to outfox the brilliant pyjama goblin investigating you I'm still excited and into what's about to come but I find that frustrating. I originally watched up until after Near and Mello are introduced. It felt like "okay L is dead that sucks but let's see what is next" and it was just another L. Not even another genius but just a copy of him. The last episode I watched had a group banging on the windows outside Near's HQ or at least rioting somewhere but I mentioned this to other people and they didn't recall that scene. I also remember Mello is person who exists and is a baddie but that's it

i stopped reading death note shortly after the first half because it had a sensible ending despite all of light's fuckups

The first half ending sucked.

The second half was cool outside of the clunky way his new opponents were introduced

The way the original two movies do it makes the most sense, I feel. It wraps up the story using the two characters most central to it.

Near being such a cheap, less interesting copy is probably the biggest issue with the second half yeah. Mello is at least his own thing with the whole criminal genius angle.

Misa is terrible because the authors are avowed misogynists. They have a rant in their manga-making manga about how to write heroines that's just loving disgusting.

I've been reflecting a lot during my rewatch on what it was exactly that turned me off originally and I finally pinned it down today. It's not just that L died in what felt like unfair circumstances or that his replacement was just a copy of him which undercut the drama of L being taken down. Those are both conclusions I came to much later while remembering the show and rewatching it now. It's very specifically that as soon as Near was introduced I thought okay "he will continue the battle" but then seems to get owned immediately and I was just so depressed that Light kept winning. I'm assuming after the initial hurdle Near starts giving as good as he gets but we'll see

Oh that sucks, link? She's really terrible but I assumed she was made like that because she only existed as a piece in L and Light's game.

Near loses to Light at first because the idea is that Near and Mello are inferior to L on their own but better than him when working together.

But yeah part 2 would be a lot more interesting if Near wasn't so boring. He's supposed to be way more passive than L(while Mello is more aggressive) but he just felt like a L clone.

Yeah that makes sense, I was just a big ol baby when I was 15 and mad that Light wasn't being owned. I also can't recall but I assume they're at a huge disadvantage again considering they're basically back to where L was when he started looking for Kira and how he kills.

Plus the second half is obviously supposed to be Kira and L's position were flipped.

Kira had the power and resources and Near was on the defensive.

EmmyOk
Aug 11, 2013

Kira always has had a huge advantage though even against L because of his method of killing being totally supernatural and a number of rules in the Death Note allowing him to control people's actions just prior to death. The memory wiping/restoring in particular narratively exists solely as a counter to L which is why it's so grating imo. L and Kira was a more even match-up but Kira still has a pretty inalienable advantage. L was just better than him and also a perfect boy.

Well I mean in that L had a ton of money and the state in his corner, an advantage Kira had usurped by the second half.

Rody One Half
Feb 18, 2011

Near and Mello both had a lot of money originally, Mello's crime boys had their own note and Shinigami, and Near had another, bigger state.

Light had the actual state it takes place in while Near and Melo had foreign based powers.

It's not really comparable.

I forgot that rant, but I remember that manga being really enjoyable but being completely dragged down by how awfully misogynistic it is.

When it was good, it was really good. Like Not-Oda, Otters 11 and its author, and how it has this hilarious wish fulfillment/apology/justification for the second half of Death Note.

But then the female characters are either housewifed, sidelined, have no agency or even stalked at one point. Like, I don't think there was even a female character in it who wrote and drew their own series?

You know, until now I thought Ohba Tsugumi was a woman, because of the name (Tsugumi is usually a female name), and it made me confused at how Ohba could be mysoginistic. But according to Wikipedia it's a pen name for a male author, whose real identity is a closely guarded secret. Hm.

:10bux: says it's Takeshi Obata himself. I mean, the only things Ohba's done are collaborations with Obata and a one-shot with another author. It's the Yoko Kanno / Gabriela Robin thing all over again.

That sucks that the author is so hardcodre anti-woman because I really like Misa as a character. Not her personality but her role as a piece in the game between L and Light. She's incredibly useful to both of them but also really damaging and dangerous to both of them, it's a really interesting dynamic. She has no agency and only exists for them to use and is the only characterised female which isn't great but I'd been putting it down to everyone except the two guys being the same thing. Except Light's dad who rules extremely hard.

I'm really enjoying reading all ya'll's posts on it!

I would thoroughly protest this. Misa is a complex and well written character. Just because she doesn't fit into some perfect Mary Sue cookie cutter persona, doesn't mean she doesn't have her own virtues. Her relationship with the others around her, including L, Light, and probably most importantly Rem really define what makes her more special and unique amongst the cast. That she is a 'pawn' is largely by choice, because she values those relationships she has with the manipulative people around her more than her own decision-making. It speaks more to how manipulative and lovely the other characters are than it says anything about Misa being a bad character. Who else in this series had such a strong bond with a near god-like being that they'd trade their lives for them?

Ringo in Mawaru Penguindrum is another really good and interesting female character, who is similarly flawed but complex and interesting. Would recommend checking it out.

Like, the few chapters before this was about the wife trying to seduce her husband away from porn games because he won't gently caress her while she's pregnant, I guess? What the gently caress?

When I tried to read it, that manga quickly gave me the impression of just being a fetish thing intended to titillate the reader.

The fact that Rem and Jealous love her isn't in and of itself a positive because in my opinion it's never shown why they fell in love with her. It's very much she's amazing because they're in love with her rather than because she's amazing they're in love with her. It'd be the equivalent of saying Light or L are brilliant geniuses but never showing any of that onscreen. Yes she chooses to be a pawn but I don't think that's a good or interesting choice. She even says she initially just wanted to meet Kira but then fell in love with Light the person at first site because he was hot and good a tennis. He treats her like poo poo immediately and is explicit about it and she's still like "hooray this is great". That's not deep or complex she's an idiot. She was at her most interesting before her and Light met.

I watched the episode where Light and Misa are let out of confinement tonight. Light's dad acts as if he'll kill them and when neither kills him to protect themselves they're allowed out of confinement though L is still suspicious. Light's dad is just too goddamn legit, literally so much respect for this guy's character. Light is even more of a chode now that he's not Kira oh my god I wish his dad had murdered him. That said it was very funny when the first thing he said to Misa was making GBS threads all over her that she could still be a suspect and what a moron she is. Tremendous. L is still too perfect for this world.
