a whip is only as effective as their speaker. pelosi suffers no major defections from dems, while the gop routinely can't pass legislation due to their own party. she's done an excellent job. is she our best spokesperson? definitely not, but replacing her isn't something that ought to be done lightly. we've got plenty of people to talk to the media, we don't have a lot of effective legislative leaders.
You're saying she's done an excellent job in having the dems act the way they've been acting that has caused them to have people lose faith in them?

i don't think people lost faith in dems because they didn't vote for ahca. and when she was speaker, she was passing good legislation constantly despite consternation from moderates that she was forcing them to make tough votes that end up dying in the senate. we wouldn't even have gotten the aca without her reviving it.

basically. the AFL has always been a right-leaning and pro-capitalist union, and trumka is a career lawyer and bureaucrat who's spent maybe six months of his entire life working alongside the union workers he claims to represent

this is a pretty common thing among mainstream union head honchos, by the way. look at their BIOS and they'll vaguely claim that they "went to work in the mines" in a particular year with no further detail, and then two years later they've got their college degree and that's the last time they've ever been in the same room as a coal miner

This. The history of the AFL versus the CIO prior to their unification was very much one where the former was much more conservative and conciliatory, with a history of being dominated by skilled tradesmen and artisan workers whereas the latter was considerably more aggressive and antagonistic toward capital (though obviously not IWW levels of such) and embraced industrial and less-skilled workers. One of the dirtier tricks the AFL pulled after unification was to keep George Meany as president of the whole federation for like twenty-five years, after having represented to the CIO that he would only be a caretaker president soon to be replaced by the much more activist CIO head, Walther Reuther.

I remember during Occupy, we had some of our own people yearning for a leader to control the movement. I think it's fairly obvious that during stressful times people seek a clear-eyed leader to help them.

If progressives love Corbyn and Sanders, then let them go ham. You can't try to temper a passionate movement because "aw shucks I wish they diversified and picked younger people."
Also, grassroots movements take a long rear end time. If Corbyn and Sanders can get people talking about socialism, and get people fired-up, then god bless 'em and god speed.

I 100% believe Bernie when he says a mass-movement/political revolution is possible if we get some firebrands into bully pulpit positions.

Pelosi has said in the past that while she likes the idea of universal healthcare, such as that put forward in H.R. 676, “the comfort level with the broader base of the American people is not there yet.”

She has also given a flat “no” at least twice this year when asked if single-payer healthcare should be included as part of the Democratic platform, most recently in May.
