harvey is traveling further east than previously predicted in worst case scenarios so it's mostly hitting a newish area

But it actually true that that is why Trump won. People would prefer magical thinking to actual hard choices about what a government does and is supposed to do. People are wholly ignorant of how their entire way of life depends on a reasonably strong and competent federal government, so they vote for the party that explicitly says the Government is bad. Because they are stupid. So he's right for exactly the wrong reason. That's why Trump got elected.

I'm looking at the Buffalo Bayou livestream and the water level is a heck of a lot lower than yesterday, I'm really hoping this is at the very least going to provide enough of a lull in the water to prevent a total collapse of the major levees and dams.

But honestly I lost track of what was going on since early last night, if there's something big that I'm missing I'd rather be informed than ignorant.

Apparently he was a flight trainer for the vast majority of the war. The one lady laughed when she looked at his flight log because apparently his thing was take off and landing training. So just up and down, up and down all goddamn day.

The only combat mission he ever flew was as a co-pilot observer for an RAF mission. When they firebombed Dresden.

Near as the lady could figure he was probably loaned out to the RAF so the Canadians could get their own first hand account on the effectiveness of area bombing.

So your grandfather bombed my grandmother in Dresden. What a small world... She recalls being in a few bombings and having to escape rubble one time. Also remembers fleeing the Russians fearful of what they might do. One of her friends apparently hung herself rather than succumb to the invading Russians. My grandfather whom she married was a US serviceman in WWII. No idea what he did, he killed himself just after I was born. The topic of him is something that never really seems to be something that is brought up. If in-laws count then my grandfather-in-law never returned from the eastern front fighting with the Soviet army. A great uncle-in-law shoot himself to end his time on the eastern front (he lived and went unpunished as far as I gather). Had one great uncle at Pearl Harbor when Japan attacked, another that was a POW in Italy and somehow escaped.

quote:

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has been publicly challenging the White House, but advisers say President Donald Trump can’t afford to fire him.

A source close to the president said Trump was angered that Tillerson and economic adviser Gary Cohn criticized his response to a Charlottesville white supremacist rally, but there’s not much he can do about it, reported Politico.

“I think that cuts him to the quick,” the source told the website.

Trump’s advisers don’t believe they could find a qualified candidate to replace Tillerson, who has feuded with the White House for months, because they don’t think UN Ambassador Nikki Haley is ready to take over.

“I couldn’t name you a guy who would take the job or get confirmed,” the source said.

...

Trump returned from a 17-day vacation to find his influence shrunken, as the Russia investigation continues to consume his administration and congressional Republicans openly questioning his leadership.

That has left the president’s mindset as “the worst it’s ever been,” according to the Politico source.

“He feels like this is not what he signed up for, and his accomplishments are being underplayed,” the source said. “He just looks around and says, ‘When is this going to get better?’”

This goddamn moron is the source of the problem. According to most research, hunter-gatherer societies, as compared to modern and even early agricultural ones, tended to have constant territorial warfare and horrendous boom/bust cycles due to having almost no resilience against bad years, overhunting, and so on. The evidence to the contrary mostly comes down to a couple of studies where researchers went and lived among a modern and relatively isolated hunter-gatherer society during a plentiful couple weeks of a good year and concluded this was the norm.
