What saddens me most about these guys is how close my teenage self was to tumbling into this shadowy abyss of self-righteous entitlement and vitriol. I wouldn't want to generalise but I imagine my experiences weren't too dissimilar to many of theirs - little success in dating, a lack of personal confidence, an overly harsh opinion of my own looks, envy of those for whom it all seemed effortless. Where I differ was that I never made that drastic transition to blaming external factors and agents for my lack of success in dating. Turns out if you make the effort to socialise, stop evaluating every girl you encounter as a possible conquest, learn to laugh at yourself a little, and listen to that quiet inner voice of reason during hard-won moments of clarity, you can go quite far. Their attitudes and opinions are beyond reprehensible - this appelation of 'roasties' in particular turns my stomach - but all I really want to do is sit each one down and carefully explain how their chosen worldview is crippling them and how this toxic environment they dwell in is a prison of their own making, one they are completely capable of escaping. I want to give them all a big squeezy hug. Some of them by the throat. EDIT: Oh and I sat through one of the previously mentioned Video Game Story Telling modules (we called it Interactive Narrative) as part of my tenuously defined degree. It was pretty interesting for someone who likes to write and has a background in literature. It wasn't all about video games, either - we looked at things like the development of interactive movies (they sure were a damp squib), in traditional roleplaying games, in CYOA books, palimpsests etc. It discussed the differences between conventionally structured narratives and those where reader/player input can affect the outcome, the degrees to which it can affect authorial intent, how to frame the illusion of choice, storytelling archetypes (Campbell's Monomyth etc), the author-reader relationship, lots of interesting tidbits.
