RabidWeasel posted:Didn't these books have fake paragraphs and item prompts for items which never existed? I'm almost sure some of the Fighting Fantasy books worked like that. The Zork series would occasionally prompt you for a fake item as an honesty check and Grailquest may have as well with subsequent punitive results for trying to cheat. I know this series fairly well and don't believe I've ever run into a fake item check. Can't say for FF.

I remember when I was a kid there was a series of Mario CYOA books where you could collect items and use them to score points. Most of those books, usually towards the end, had a "Did you find an X?" choice with a fake item. Taking that choice would result in an immediate "game over".

Fake entries in FF books- it depends on the book. Most early ones didn't do that sort of thing. Others, including the books Ratazosk and I are reading and LPing on the forums right now, had situations where you had to pass reading checks and complex math problems to find entries that would resolve certain encounters with extra bonus points. And there were some books with entries you could only reach by not playing as written and cheating like Added Space describes. Usually those entries put you in a bad place. Lone Wolf, I think, didn't do any of that. Elaborate multiple paths, yes. Odd items that you find in one book and don't use till several books later, yes. But those things are more fun.

There are a number of math problems in Lone Wolf (and at least one on World of Lone Wolf), but I don't think any were absolutely required to beat the book. Although failing might kill you, there was usually another way around the encounter. The Cretan Chronicles had an interesting system where a page number in italics instead of normal print gave you the chance to skip 10 pages ahead. This resulted in a possible bonus or penalty in the book which could include historical trivia, picking up on a subtle clue, or admonishment do failing to act in line with Hellenic Grecian customs. It was pretty arbitrary and awesome. It took a bit of working to translate to the LP with varying results.

The man suggests that you refresh yourself here whilst he seeks an audience with the King.

Book one is kind of a short one because of how many mutually exclusive paths there are. Some of the others are a lot more linear (as we'll see) so they seem longer in the first play through but have less variety when you go back to them. We missed a few things, most notably the encounter I mentioned at the start, but the burrowcrawler and gourgaz are probably the most interesting enemies and both are pretty hard to miss (the only opportunity to skip the gourgaz by not going with the soldiers to meet the prince). There were a couple of creatures we could have encountered that will show up again in later books, but I'll point those out when we eventually do see them. Unlike some books in the series, this one doesn't contain any particularly important equipment, so we didn't miss anything in that line. We didn't come across any opportunities to use some of our Kai Disciplines, but they do exist. There's at least a couple of opportunities to use each one, although some are a bit hard to find. For example, one use of Camouflage only comes up if you stop following your guide and explore Holmgard by yourself. But we'll certainly have opportunities to use them in later books. Speaking of which, it's probably time to get on to the next one.

HOOLY BOOLY posted:some kind of key or crystal i want to say? i might be thinking of something between the 2nd and 3rd books then. There's one particular Special Item Crystal Star from Banedon in this book you can only pick up VERY early on (like miss it if you take the wrong path 1st or 2nd choice of the book.) To my knowledge it only has one unique use in the second book, otherwise it simply serves as a reminder that, 'Hey, something happened in book 1' without any obvious benefit. I believe you can pick up an encounter specific key in the Graveyard as well as 20 gems from smashing skulls but I don't think they're ever referenced again in the series. I'll admit that I don't recall all the specifics of this first book perfectly.

Fire on the Water posted:The Story So Far … Our first decision is which Kai Discipline to add to our repertoire: Sixth Sense, Tracking, Weaponskill, Mind Over Matter or Mindshield. Second, we get to pick two new pieces of equipment from the following list:
If we pick a weapon or backpack item then we will have to discard something else, so nominate what you'd like to replace. We can also leave equipment at Holmgard for safekeeping, so if there's anything you'd like to leave behind then mention that as well. We're also given an additional 16 Gold Crowns and our Endurance Points are restored to maximum. I'll update the action chart on page one after we've voted.

That's exactly i was thinking of! i haven't found it in either runs of the first book i've done so far though so who knows what it actually does. Anyway, since we still have that fancy sword from the Prince, lets be better at using it by taking Weaponskill-Short Swords. Let's also grab the shield since i don't recall many other opportunities to get one otherwise.

OK, literally everyone picked the Shield (understandably - it's the best thing there) so we'll take that as our first pick and the Chainmail Waistcoat as our second. Those are both special items that don't require us to drop anything else and no one asked for anything to be left for safekeeping in Holmgard, so we'll keep all our equipment from book one as well. And unsurpisingly given the votes, the dice came up with Sixth Sense as our new Discipline. I've updated our Action Chart accordingly, so let's get started! Fire on the Water posted:Captain D’Val and his guards escort you to the citadel gate where a small covered wagon awaits you. As soon as you clamber in, the gates are thrown open and you are hurried away through the crowded streets of Holmgard. After a short but uncomfortable journey, the wagon stops and the driver pulls open the canvas flap. How do we react? Attack, or just try to get away? The ship is thrown into a frenzy of activity as sailors grab buckets and blankets with which to fight the fire. Flames are roaring through the hatch cover, and it takes over an hour to contain the blaze. The damage to the ship is great. The entire store of food and fresh water has been destroyed and the mid-section of the ship badly weakened. Shall we follow him immediately, or take the opportunity to search his cabin while he's distracted? This plays out exactly the same regardless of how you raise the alarm; the only difference is that if you enter the hold you take some damage, but Healing completely negates that.
