I’m extremely ignorant on the subject, so I hope someone will be able to illuminate me: how much is this already related to climate change? Or is this within “standards” for the region?
Probably not much. Harvey had a pit stop over a patch of warmer water which probably bumped it up a category or two. That you might pin on warmer climates. But the hurricanes themselves are relatively normal in the sense that you will have a period of good years followed by a period of bad ones. The risk of tying hurricanes to global warming is that people will then look at a 12 year period of no major hurricanes hitting the US as proof it was all Chinese lies. Warmer temps will make the hurricanes stronger though. I can’t find it now, but I remember reading that hurricanes in North America coincide with droughts in Africa because the same weather patterns affect both.

One of the best tools for measuring hurricanes is "Accumulated Cyclone Energy", a formula that combines wind speed with duration. All the storms in a year, tropical storms to category 5, are added together to provide the ACE number. Even years where hurricanes don't make news because they are confined to the Atlantic can have high ACEs: This is a graph that shows the changing ACE over the years, together with a rolling average http://la.climatologie.free.fr/cyclone/index-ACE.png These things are cyclic, but the current cycle seems to be very strong.

It isn't too off base though to suggest that Kim is really after sanctions relief, it is just he doesn't care about food trade as much as people like to claim. He wants to be able to sell NK ores and resources to the world so that he can use that money to live the high life and to bribe his generals to keep loyal to him. The nuclear program means that a potential consequence of sanctions preventing him from keeping his generals and advisors loyal is someone in the region getting nuked.

That Italian Guy posted:I'm extremely ignorant on the subject, so I hope someone will be able to illuminate me: how much is this already related to climate change? Or is this within "standards" for the region? As others have said, it's not really possible to point to one example of weather and say that it's caused by a change in climate. Even a long time after the fact. However, consider this, climate change models predict (and are actually recording) a global rise in average temperatures. Temperatures are heat, heat is energy. The climate is a fluid system where energy goes in (mostly as heat from the Sun) and energy goes out (as weather). The more energy that goes in, the more energy that has to go out. Either in the form of more violent or more frequent releases periodically or as a broad increase in the power of general weather patterns.

Mr Ice Cream Glove posted:When will Trump tweet about the largest fire in Los Angeles history that is currently at 10% containment? The media has been pretty quiet in general about the fire season across the West...I guess that makes sense in terms of other stories being more immediately catastrophic. Also, quite seriously: most of the West's fires happen in mountainous terrain, so people from the East can't comprehend that, because they've literally never seen a mountain, and don't understand the scales and sizes that wildfires in the west burn out. I once read an article about an anticipated heavy fire season in California, and someone said "Can't they just pour seawater on the mountains to prevent the fires?".
