If I recall, there was a mod that basically took commander difficulty, and made it similar to legendary in regards to not tilting things in the player's favor, but without the time extension element. Is there a version of this for War of the Chosen?

I had this problem. In my case I didn't actually activate the mods. I clicked the boxes beside each mod in the launcher and then they activated. Not sure if that's what's causing the issue for you.

War of the chosen, performance question: I've got 16gb ram, an i7 4770k, and a geforce 980 and the game is on an ssd.

I have everything turned to the max and I get some stuttering still at the start of missions when they're jumping out and deploying, but otherwise it's fine. But at that time it's .5 FPS for a couple of seconds sometimes. My question is, what one or two things can I turn down? Is there anything that hardly makes an improvement but really impacts performance?

ayyy hero repeater specialist buddy. I just had a mission where specialist nailed the warlock with an execution on activation. The follow up mission we're doing an alien facility guarded by berserker queen. Overwatch hit, then guardian procced, then guardian procced again and executed her. Now if I can just bring her along for the archon king...

There is no wealth like knowledge, no poverty like ignorance.

This expansion owns bones and playing blind Legend/Ironman is an exercise in punishment. Some thoughts so far:

- I always bring at least one Flashbang but If you get Neutralize Field Commander as your first guerilla op after Operation Gatecrasher you'd better bring at least one even if you don't use them. In Legend that loving general has like 15 HP and likes to run the moment you sneeze on your first pod. The worst part is that if you try to stealth it until you find the general, every pod you passed by earlier will slowly but surely wander towards your concealed squad, even if you're at the corner of the map and way out of any patrol paths. I still haven't found a good technique for finishing this without taking at least a wound, or having to roll the dice that the general won't dodge a shot.

- Up to the month of... I think August?, I still haven't gotten a Captain for Squad Size 2, but thankfully the game rolled "Live Fire Training" for the Reaper faction which means all my Guerilla Tactics School trainees immediately come out of it at Sargent level. This is awesome and it means buying recruits for 40 bucks and waiting 10 days means an easy replacement for an early game squaddie who bites the dust. Only just got mag weapons for the whole crew and am currently researching Plated Armor. The Avatar Project was counting down but a Covert Op dropped it by two bars, and I haven't done the Blacksite or the first Facility yet.

- Up to now the death count is three, and they were all from one mission. That mission ended with two people playing tag with the zombies because the SitRep was Psionic enemies only. We're talking all-Sectoid and ADVENT Priests running around, and just one ADVENT MEC for flavor. At the end of the mission I had only Dragunova and my Sharpshooter alive, with a single priest having Holy Warriored a Sectoid who raised three zombies, so the only way I could beat the mission was to chase the priest down and kill him so the Sectoid and its zombie horde would die. The XCOM gods smiled on me (or took pity after losing three dudes, I guess) when my Sharpshooter managed to dodge two zombie swings and was able to dash away to hunt down the priest. The priest AI after it Holy Warriors seems to really be defensive, retreating the Priest away from the action altogether.

- Speaking of Priests, getting Stasis'd in the middle of a fight sucks, because Stasis runs out after the end of your turn, but before the aliens take theirs. That's how my Ranger got destroyed in that all-Psi mission.

- The build order I went with was GTS, Resistance Ring, Infirmary (Legend/Ironman wounds do NOT gently caress around, you can't not get this in Legend, IMO), Power Relay, and currently building the Proving Ground very, very late for what I normally do. Resistance Ring is so loving good though. Training Center is still a mystery to me, but I'm getting all those skill points.

- I hate the Assassin's Bending Reed so much. SO MUCH. Dealing with the flashbang-immune Warlock was a goddamn cakewalk compared to her.

I think my favourite party in this game thus far has been two reapers, two templars and two psi ops.

Mind controlled aliens, ghosts and ghosted reapers can all be swapped by the templars and the whole thing turns into a cluster-gently caress melee of templars swapping in templar ghosts swapping in right next to people cuz reapers are invisible and the aliens can't land a hit on anyone who matters.

It's kind of awesome, actually. Breakthroughs were a wonderful way to mess up the standardized tech tree progression in a positive way because now you need to think about if gaining really powerful permanent bonuses or researching something less vital but still important twice as quickly is worth delaying mag weapons by a week or something.

Sometimes the Chosen's script works really, really well. I was having a tough run against the Hunter one mission, so I sent a rookie to get a close range flanking shot hoping the bad guy would gun him down next turn instead of someone valuable. It worked, and the Chosen said a few things to my sacrificial rookie on his turn; something close to "*gasp*, is this your first time out?!" and later cackling about one-shotting my brave idiot from full health into 'bleeding out' status.

So my proudest gaming moment was successful completion of an impossible ironman run in EW, and I'm trying legendary ironman now for the first time.

It's pretty intense.

My entire A team wiped right before the Avatar timer hit max, and my only sergeant is gravely wounded. So, I can't run either of the reduce Avatar progress operations that are sitting in the covert ops queue. I dropped a full squad of rookies into the Black Site, because they're the only soldiers I have left that aren't wounded. The assassin tried to ruin my day half way through the mission, but the rookie squad dropped her, with two casualties. I have four rookies left, and I'm about to enter the facility.

I won't lie, I love the Hunter's dialogue. It either hits just that right flavor of cheesy badass that I can't help but love, or is simply hilariously snarky and sassy.

I'm still giggling over his reaction to my hucking a grenade at him while he was on the roof of a bus: "You're not much for subtlety."

Some of the new mechanics that "force a reload" end ironman games, meaning I just couldn't bring myself to blind ironman until all the lessons were learned. Introducing Mox's justice ability then having the literal first enemy as a loving flamethrower dude that explodes is one of the biggest trolls I've seen in gaming.

all of the facility/blacksite stuff can be soloed by a reaper if you're really desperate. facility missions in particular are as free as it gets - end turn on the star, hit the button, double move to the evac that you drop in their range and gtfo. you can be vulnerable to enemies for literally zero turns

Low profile sitreps (no squad members higher than sgt on mission) are some bullshit at midgame if you aren't keeping a bunch of low level dudes around. Extra fun when that means you have 4 dudes on a train supply raid, bugged perma-Lost World, and, oh btw, there's the serpent king here, too. Much savescumming was required to overcome that one.
