i can't wrap my head around people refusing to have Facebook

if you are really worried about the privacy thing just set everything to "only me" and never check in anywhere. it's very easy.

some things I've received due to having a Facebook account: me finding the owner of a dog I found, me finding the owner of 3 different cats I've found, a random friend I hadn't seen since high school messaging me "you were always really nice to me and I know you like old video games and I just found all mine so I have my old collection you can pickup for free", being notified of events that friends are having, reading posts about interesting events in my area, being able to publicly besmirch a company when calling customer service does nothing and then finally getting help, a guy in my neighborhood getting rid of an NBA Jam arcade cabinet for FREE because he "needs to get this loving thing out of my house, just come get it", the list goes on and on

im not sure that getting rid of things like that just so Fuckerberg makes 4 less dollars a year on advertising would really be sticking it to anybody but myself.

There's a substantial difference between "having Facebook" which allows Zuck to just do his old school creeping around and data mining, and having the FB App running on your phone which just turns it into an unashamed and brazen spying device.

That i agree with. actually i just uninstalled Facebook messenger due to this thread and now it's forcing me to the android app store to get messenger when trying to read messages in the web browser. before installing messenger it used to let me read messages in the browser so it somehow permanently hosed with my phone settings

if you didn't know: google actually allows Facebook to access functions in the os that normally aren't accessible to third party apps

there's certain things that can't be made non-global that are a problem if someone is stalking or harassing you:

  • Your current profile photo must be viewable by anyone. If you don't want your face out there you have to use joke pics or not have one.
  • When people tag you in their photo uploads or posts, you can review it before it appears on your wall but you can't prevent the actual tag. You can only go in afterward and ask facebook to remove it.
  • This one I haven't fully figured out the mechanics of but even if you have a post or photo set to friends only, if your friend likes or comments on it then their friends can now see it on their timeline. This makes your security work only as well as your friend's. This one only happens sometimes so I'm not sure if it's a bug or on purpose.

Incidentally Instagram doesn't have any of these issues despite being a Facebook property and a lot of my friends have moved there as a result.

Yeah all that definitely sucks. I'm trying to think of ways around that. Maybe use a fake name and only let your friends know it's you? I see a lot of that on Facebook so it's not too uncommon. sucks you can't do things like normal people but I guess that is what stalkers want. sorry you're going through that

Though to be honest there was one time a few years ago when a family member made a death threat to my parents. I thought about deleting Facebook but I told myself "I'd rather them have an easy way to reach me than worrying that they'll try to reach me in other methods".

The tagging thing is total bullshit. I can't believe you can't completely block it.

thanks. it was just family inheritance bullshit. definitely understandable when the deceased was an electrician! it's one step below British royalty! someone was gonna get that 2001 Chevy Lumina or else!

Did you ever consider a "fake" Facebook account for your stalker to find? like use your real name, pics of you and stuff, a few check-ins to places you never visited, pics of pets that aren't yours, and set your location to some place 2,000 miles away? then have your real Facebook page but don't use your real name on it or something

go through your Facebook privacy settings with a fine-toothed comb and make sure nothing is set to "Friends of friends" or anything like that.

actually trying to get rid of animals is the opposite of hoarding but im sure your smug "i don't even have a TV" attitude at gatherings (that people begrudgingly have to notify you about over AOL Instant Messenger) is a real hit

I might be wrong about iOS then, but I know I read somewhere about Google collaborating with Facebook to allow them to access certain bits of the OS that normally weren't available to other apps.

Not sure where I read that, though. Thought it might have been an article posted here.

for the goon having trouble with the facebook mobile page, it isn't because you deleted messenger. facebook deliberately cripples their pages on mobile platforms to try to force you to use the app.

google does similar things with youtube and airplay on ios so that you have to keep the page open on your phone and cannot background stream because they want to force people onto the app.
