Pew pew!

Nothing earth-shattering from Jim's Q&A panel today at DragonCon:

Someone asked if Oberon still existed as a mantle. Jim said he/it was destroyed during Shakespearean times because he/it tried to run a scheme on Mab and Titania at the same time.

Jim confirmed that Ivy/the Archive is receiving digital information (in addition to physical information), but that she isn't built for it. We'll see the effects of this in a later book.

Three mongrel men in exchange for a party member? I found that one in the Faustian Bargain Bin.
I just blitzed through the Twenty Palaces books (starting at Twenty Palaces), and holy poo poo! I'm so in love with that setting and those novels! Reading Connolly's blog about it being cancelled/shelved indefinitely is breaking my heart! I love me some Dresden Files, but I think these Twenty Palaces books are better than Butcher.

You started with the prequel, good.

I still maintain that if the prequel had been written and published first, the series would still be alive.

Book 1 is confusing as gently caress if you haven't read the prequel. :(

What are you, high?

They need at least a few more passes by an editor to fix the amazingly high number of misspellings and flat out "That word is not the word that should go here" mistakes that really gently caress up reading them.

Unless they've gotten that treatment since way back when I first read them at the recommendation of an earlier iteration of this thread.

Man I love those, and the audiobooks are so well done. I don't think there's been any news, but if you haven't read any of his Lychford books, I'd recommend those. It's a bit like a super low stakes version of those books, all the same setting I believe.

I don't remember that many issues with them, but I will admit that I am not reading with a critical eye.

As far as characters go, I prefer an ex-con conscripted into fighting horrors from beyond to a wizard who is kind of a dick.

Dresden is fun and I enjoy them, but Twenty Palaces is by far the better series, albeit forever incomplete.

Just finished the Chequay files books on the recommendation of this thread. The positive is that they were excellent books, the negative for me is that they made me feel inadequate about my own writing. I did find it a bit strange for a male writer to write so many lead female characters, but nothing grated on me. Did any of the ladygoons here get annoyed by anything in there?

Well with Twenty Palaces you get both!

Connolly wasn't a very polished writer when he wrote them, but the books and their ideas are really inventive, and I certainly hope he can/will go back to them someday.

I've only listened to the first audiobook but Myfanwy is pretty much fine. She's an ultra-shut-in but that's very in character. Her American friend might be a little bit too good of a ~best friend forever~, IMO, but it's not that bad. I need to get Stiletto sometime.

Ok so I finally got around to cracking open Falling London. I'm up to chapter eight I think, and I'm loving it so far. The extremely cold open as far as any paranormal poo poo is great! I love three out of four characters hate the one, and I love a gay character that so far hasn't come off as pandering or stereotypical.

Super glad for the recommendations!

I just found out the other day that there was a third one and am about a fifth of the way through it after re-reading the first two. First one's the best so far, and I'm not sure he'll manage to top it.

You liked the opening? I found it disjointed and confusing for the first chapter/scene or two and I nearly put it down on the first read. Not sure why, but I couldn't separate Costain and Sefton in my mind in the intro and I had trouble followig what was going on. Way better on a re-read though, so maybe I was just in the wrong mood at first.

I still can't work out why it was confusing. I mean, the story is about a chaotic night, but the writing... I dunno. I would have thought that if it were the writing, it'd remain confusing the second and third time I read it, but it didn't. I just read it again, and nope, totally clear now.

Enough people have mentioned having a problem with the first few chapters that I suspect there is something measurably 'wrong' with them, in terms of the numbers of new characters introduced versus the number the author is expecting you to keep track of.

There's also that in 99.9% of urban fantasy books 'black male undercover policeman from London' will be a specific enough tag to refer to a single character. On your first read you don't know that 'newbie' BMUPFL and 'complicit' BMUPFL are two different core series characters.

Also, pretty sure there's something up with Mo on the same level of Bob being the current Eater of Souls. I'm also wondering how whatever it was that Mo experienced (death and reincarnation, brief translocation to another plane, or even just the big N shielding her) has affected the baby
