the verrit stuff has jogged my memory about that pseudo-org last year that published the list of "fake news sites" like the intercept. The wapo was citing it as a definitive source for a hot second before people pointed out that it was like one guy in a basement or something. what was that site and is it still around? I'm guessing it also was a daou/brock operation.

PropOrNot is an independent team of concerned American citizens with a wide range of backgrounds and expertise, including professional experience in computer science, statistics, public policy, and national security affairs. We are currently volunteering time and skills to identify propaganda - particularly Russian propaganda - targeting a U.S. audience. We collect public-record information connecting propaganda outlets to each other and their coordinators abroad, analyze what we find, act as a central repository and point of reference for related information, and organize efforts to oppose it. We formed PropOrNot as an effort to prevent propaganda from distorting U.S. political and policy discussions. We hope to strengthen our cultural immune systems against hostile influence and improve public discourse generally. However, our immediate aim at this point is to empower the American voter and decrease the ability of Russia to influence the ensuing American election.

lol fake news owns originally just a subdemo of clickfarm websites, they were mostly blogs created by international communities for ad money in countries that are dirt poor. they literally make poo poo up wholesale for clicks (similar to how supermarket tabloids function) just to pay bills. eventually, at some point, these were used for political purposes as well. i can't tell when they basically became actual propaganda (around 2015 seems to be the inflection point) but they use the same methods: make up poo poo about hillary clinton or w/e for clicks from republicans, but this also served to influence bubbles like olds on facebook. you could literally make a website called like realnews2150.nz and write a headline called "hillary clinton ate a devil dog, making her literally the devil" or w/'e and republicans would actually link this trash on fb. it was also used to legitimize bot talking points. however, the second people brought this up, the difference between the actual clickfarm/propaganda sites and actual news became blurred bc things like breitbart which, while propaganda orgs, do not function like fake news websites do. they sometimes report real news and slant it heavily -- or invent poo poo wholesale, but they're not the same kind of website. so now breitbart is fake news. oh, the intercept discussed the leaked dnc emails. fake news. etc etc. fake news is super real and still influencing us but like, no one cares anymore because they devauled the term for things they don't like. so now there's like a million actual fake news websites out there controlling discussions and no ones doing poo poo about it lol everything owns

for some people this is controversial, but the NYT et al are fake news. for something uncontroversial to back this up, remember their biased coverage in the lead-up to the iraq war. based on internal memos, it was revealed that MSNBC fired Phil Donahue because he criticized the iraq war. there's tons of other bullshit all throughout history, but that is just a recent very prominent and what should be an uncontroversial example.

they're not fake news, but they are biased. you seriously have to make the distinction between these clickfarm sites and hardcore propaganda sites and news orgs that happen to be biased. its dangerous to call everything fake news because it delegitimatizes even the somewhat legitimate. if a news org publishes something dangerous and wrong every once in a while, call that one piece what it is.
