I had a deep and insane teenager hatred of new yorkers back then because they were ruining the beaches, driving worse than the old gomers already dying there, putting garbage ads on television, and talking like stroke victims all the time. 9/11 helped me partly get over what was left of it by the time I was 17. I still can't trust someone with trump's accent and probably never will though. It's like they put in 25% of the effort of a Massachusetts accent but want 100% of the rear end in a top hat cred. It's like the southerner accent, nothing sounds like it could ever hold any water when it gets spoken like that.

I was homeschooled for 1 year because reasons, and that year happened to be 2001. I watched TV for a while, remarked to my mom that there was no way in hell that the South Tower was going to remain standing, and then proceeded with my normal morning routine of ignoring my studies and playing Starcraft while my mom went on her morning walk. Good old carefree days of youth.

I was working in the Middle East on an oil rig on Sept 11th. We had the TV on and the local guys were incredibly upset, some of them sat watching with tears running down their faces. I guess they worked out what was going to happen way faster than I did.

Since we're all sharing embarrassing stories about playing gay chicken with patriotism: I unironically listened to Jackyl's "I hate you Bin Laden" a few times in the weeks following 9/11.

The worst that happens during an ice storm is that you maybe lose power for a couple of hours. The worst that happens during a hurricane is that your house gets blown away or inundated with 20 feet of water.

Not if you live in the rural US, I went through an ice storm in northern GA in 2000 I think it was where we were without power for almost two weeks, and it took a week of 8-10 hour days to cut and drag the dozens of large trees that fell across the road leading to town and we had to clear them without emergency crew help because they were simply overwhelmed. People were still cutting up trees that fell down across non used roads over half a year later. Lesson being, don't live in the woods. Don't know that too many people actually died from it, but it was a massive pain in the rear end. orange juche fucked around with this message at 15:57 on Sep 12, 2017 |

Georgia always gets the worst ice storm results. It's like it's an event they are always surprised by and then the interstate shuts down for several days.

An ice storm knocked out power the Easter I got an SNES. That kind of sucked. Otherwise I kind of like winter storms because it's an excuse to stay home and huddle up for the day.

We had a wicked bad ice storm here in Turannah back in...2013? I think, where there were people in the downtown core without power for a week or more. There were lineups at every Starbucks and Timmies to use the power outlets. I remember distinctly because I was on a date and the girl couldn't invite me back to her place because she had no power. Cockblocked by mother nature.

The problem with ice is you can't salt the roads to prep really. If you do it just washes off in the initial rain and you're wasting the salt. Once the ice sets you can salt/sand mix on the roads but the real danger is then downed trees and power lines, neither of which you can really mitigate feasibly.

Yea we had to put plastic on the hallway leading to the kitchen and bedrooms, and all lived in the living room with the fireplace. Even then it was cold as gently caress. Didn't freeze to death so it was a win in my book.

Georgia, Oklahoma along that Lat 35 gets just barely below freezing where it comes down wet, then freezes the trees, powerlines ice up and go down. You could argue all of Oklahoma is rural, but power outages in populated areas around here for 3 weeks one time. We bought a generator after that. And we had a big wood stove. People did die.

I grew up in Miami, and my family went through Hurricane Andrew no problem. Our secret was to buy a house that was built right after a previous big hurricane, and extended right after another previous big hurricane, that wasn't within smelling distance of the ocean. We didn't even board up the three walls-worth of glass sliding doors on the leeward side of the house. Too much work! We were dumb lucky idiots with a house made from cinderblock. Meanwhile entire neighborhoods in Redland were scythed from the earth, apparently because they were made from compressed cardboard. I remember a reporter doing a bit: he walked through Where A House Once Was, picked up a piece of a supporting wall, and snapped it in half with his bare hands. Wow, what a terrible shame, too bad there's absolutely no way to identify responsible parties and hold them to account, because if we did, the housing development pyramid scheme might slow down before we get our share out of it. Oh, another secret: you have to be able to go without electricity for up to two weeks after the storm. IE, no a/c, in Miami, in the rainy season. That's when you'll want to evacuate. But it's survivable: unless you live in New Orleans, the roads get cleared, stores re-open, police and emergency services actually do their jobs and help you.
