Updated to the iOS 11 GM and Siri’s voice is still old Siri. What gives?

I'll be getting the 8+ for my wife and I'm trying to figure out the best deals with the various trade in plans. An iPhone 6 in good condition gets me $300 but the spare iPhone 6 we have has a cracked screen. Anyone know if cellular companies care if the screen has been repaired? I can pay $70 for a 3rd party repair and still net $230 off a new phone.

So as a iPhone 6 user, I'm trying to see what the differences between the 7 and the 8 are. Is it just OIS available on the 8 and the usual better internals (cpu, camera)? Edit: and 3D Touch and the ability to do wireless charging.

I'm tempted by the X but I'm pretty skeptical that this is what Apple sees as the future. It seems almost a given that they'll get TouchID back in the X line as soon as they work out the under-the-screen tech.

I'm also a 6 user, I'm planning to get an SE. Compared to the plain old 6 it has better internals, better design, and it's the cheapest model. I asked in the other thread, apparently the only major downside is that the Touch ID is slower compared to newer models. Of course if you want a bigger phone the calculus will have to be a bit different, but seems like a good "wait for better product" option.

They called it iPhone X/10 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the iPhone. But yeah, going 4 4S 5 5S 6 6S 7... to 8 and 10 at the same time seems bizarre on the surface. These things sell themselves though, so naming convention isn't terribly important for the iPhone's success right now. If it has any effect, it'll be positive -- casual buyers will see a higher integer and exaggerate the upgrade.

The refurbished 6S has also dropped in price; it's now $429 for a 64GB 6S and $509 for a 64GB 6S Plus, which is a pretty great deal if you do want a bigger phone.

Ooh. That's... actually tempting. I have a 5S right now and planned on switching to Pixel when Google had its new phones out later (two separate 5S battery swelling issues, including having to start legal action to get them to replace it the second time for free) but that's a pretty decent price on a 6S Plus that might keep me around.

that's the phone everyone pondering an upgrade should grab during the next year.

I went with a 7 32gb a few months ago as it wasn't much more than refurb or swappa 6s's at the time, now a 6s at that price - it's a different story. I did just help my pops get into a 6s though, and it was a huge upgrade for him over his old 5c 8gb.

Same camera actually. Apple's website has a nice feature-by-feature comparison page to play with: https://www.apple.com/iphone/compare/

Over the 7, the 8 has 256gb available, a faster processor, wireless charging, 60fps 4k recording.

So they are very similar.

Same specs in terms of pixels and aperture but reportedly a different image sensor - physically larger, which should translate to better performance (especially in low light.)

I'm honestly really impressed with the model 7 base for $549 now. The base of 32 gig is low, but otherwise that's a pretty killer phone for that price. And I say that as a 6s + user. My phone is great, minus the fact that the charging port is finicky and most importantly my home button is broken. I'm using a digital home button, but I can't wait to get into an Apple Store and see how much it is to fix it. If it's over $350, I may just upgrade to a base 7 and wait till next year when the X line will be fully matured and awesome.

So like wasn't the whole point of moving to a fake home button in the 7 that it would be more durable than real home buttons?

I only ask because I've owned 5 iPhones with real home buttons and none have ever failed.

It makes the pricing jump both from the 7 and to the X seem more palatable, even though you're really not getting much more for your money from the 7 to the 8. It's really rather shrewd.

There were other cynical moves too, imo:

The Apple Watch Series 3 singular differentiating visual feature being a red crown, which doesn't even go with most straps even the ones in Apple's own marketing material, purely so the people who buy it can make sure others know that they've got the latest, greatest version..

Apple removing the 128GB option entirely, leaving people with a chasm between a size that will rapidly seem too small now that the phone's party piece is 4K video recording, and a grossly expensive and overkill 256GB option.

Apple If nothing else are master manipulators of their customer base.

Same situation, only I'm coming from a 6+. I've been an iPhone owner since the beginning but I'm switching to Android this cycle.

Check out the Galaxy S8. It's $300 cheaper than the X and has all the features you're looking for, with the added bonus features of a headphone jack and rectangular screen.

Fuck the DH
I'm unsure if I want to go 6 -> 8 or wait another year. Another year will probably bring some of these X features to the "regular" pricing tier.

As far why Apple skipped 7s and went to 8: Asia. Asian superstition believes the number eight as the "lucky" number. Casinos throw around a lot of 8s and avoid 4s as much as they can for that reason. I know that could sound stupid, but the iPhone is not as ubiquitous in China as it is everywhere else, and if just skipping 7S gives them a sales boom in China then it's worth it.

Probably will just go with the 8+ until they re-add touchID to the X2 or solve these problems.
