There is no wealth like knowledge, no poverty like ignorance.

I can't believe I'm saying this but I wish I had Bradford voice over to remind me that I have an Evac button to call the Skyranger for a near-dead soldier. I lost my Lieutenant Ranger to a Viper grab when my sniper missed a 91% shot to free her, I ran the Ranger as far as I could outside the action after using my Specialist (who was supposed to hack the objective in that last turn but I opted to fail the mission and save my soldier instead) to shoot the Viper, and the Viper just ups and tongue grabs my Ranger and crushes her again, but this time to death. So I failed the mission and lost a soldier, and when I was in the shower later... "of course, I had a loving evac button, gently caress!" and then I started love-hating Ironman all over again. Lesson loving learned, I'll tell you that. Got a 1 HP dude and no time left? Just evac them. Don't lose them like I did.

Er, sure you don't have the chance for a random resistance soldier to appear, either through a card or continent bonus?

Squadsight helps, but early game you might not have the accuracy to reliably use it, and theres always the problem of sight lines too. Thats why I say mid-late game snipers become more useful, but early game they're more of a hindrance. Early game, most of their turns are spent getting into position before they can really contribute to any fight meaningfully. Mid game to late has a lot of stuff that minimizes these problems, from levels to gear that just make a sniper stronger overall. Plus its a matter of mission type, where non timed missions are amazing for snipers cause they can take their time.

Honestly, I feel Snipers would have been way better if they either removed the restriction from moving and firing, or just given them a grappling hook to start with so they can get into position easier.

On another note, what exactly is the Berserker Queen armor good for? It seems to give a single charge melee attack, but I can't really fathom why I'd need that when I have both rangers and templars.

The melee attack is a free action. Its amazing for repositioning.

Also in general its an Exo suit. Armor and a heavy weapon are always good.

It also panics Mutons and Berserkers.

No soldier has accuracy early game. I think playing gatecrasher too much messes with people's heads. Snipers can't overwatch crawl or flank without lowering their damage. People view the need to stay still or dashing to reposition as backwards as hell because its not what xcom encourages. My sharpshooters are all gunslingers too but I use the sniper rifle just as much. If they feel like they are in the right place, I go with it.

I'm 99% sure this is just buggy. Sometimes pods activate when they didn't before and sometimes a pod bugs out and doesn't activate when it should have. Sometimes when I have a Reaper calling sniper shots on a pod they just sit there and take it on the chin, sometimes as soon as I hit someone they dive for cover, sometimes they only take cover once I hit someone. Sometimes if I chuck a blaster bomb in there they just sit there looking dumb.

The only fully reliable way to activate a pod is to saunter into sight of it with a non-concealed soldier.

Yeah they take falling damage along with my unit. They land directly underneath the tiles they were stood on but it'd be great if they actually landed where the ragdolls fly.

70% chance to instakill an advent soldier is nothing to sneeze at either, especially if it's an rear end in a top hat like a lancer or a shieldbearer.

On my current campaign I rolled both the +1 conventional weapons and +1 pistols breakthroughs early on, so I made all of my sharpshooters into gunslingers and they've been consistent throughout. I did take Long Watch on most of them but there have been times I've hunkered instead of taking the overwatch because the Claymore is a stronger opener than an overwatch shot.

I go out of my way to try and build a hacking specalist. Shutdowns on enemy units are easy to pull off that I get plenty of use out of it.

I did have an idea for a mod though; I've heard of people using a mod that increases the hack stat after each succesful hack. That sounds broken, but I think it would work great as a reward for skullmining. Skullmining could give your soldier an increase to their hack stat based on the type of troop they impaled. Give you more of an incentive to actually bother doing it. Then again I'm also the kind of person who enjoyed tazing aliens in EW so I guess I just want an excuse to carry the skulljack more.

Absolutely. If I'm trying to skullmine, I'll usually do it as a first move in my turn, so that I'll be able to save the specialist if he whifs. If he hits, it's a very nice way to eliminate an annoying target so that I can focus elsewhere.

Oh, I didn't realize the melee was a free action. I was seriously confused why it was basically a crummier slash attack. Might be good on a Ranger I suppose? Or would it be better suited on a class that doesn't have a dash like I dunno.. Grenadier?

The hacking screen should be shown right away, and then have the drone only fly over when you're actually doing the hack.

I'm afraid so.
Is there a mod that just removes the penalties for failing a hack? I'd be far more willing to gamble on those 50% hacks if I was only wagering my soldier's turn instead of taking a 50% chance to give the robot a giant buff. Between stasis, stun swords and frost bombs it's not like the game doesn't have plenty of riskless incapacitation moves in it already.

It's probably better on a ranger, because shotguns get better crits, and the free action is great for setting up flanking shots. You can do something like: blue move toward the enemy, Free Action Smash towards an enemy A that will leave you flanking enemy B, and then you can ignore A for a turn if they're stunned, and put a shotgun into B's flank. Best on ranger, still good on anyone else.

Grenadiers set up flanking shots not by repositioning themselves, but by repositioning walls. And heavy guns have the worst crit chance.
