the second half does not follow from the first, I'm afraid.

it turns out that there were quite a few people desperate for a voice in politics to the left of "Single Payer Will Never, Ever Happen"

that they were willing to compromise to the point of accepting Sanders and Gabbard- "look Sandy Hook is just a thing that happens" and "Assad's not so bad" respectively- should probably have been a wakeup call sooner than it was.

fortunately, the lesson has now been learned, and with luck the 2018 version of the Democratic Party will have a better goal in mind than convincing the electorate better things aren't possible.

Sometimes, there's a man, well, he's the man for his time and place. He fits right in there. And that's Jimmy T.
So this guy I went to college with posted this article about the impact of the meat industry on climate change. The article isn't bad, but his accompanying post just makes me want to tell him he is a loving moron and is sniffing his vegetarian farts while patting himself on the back.

https://www.economist.com/blogs/eco...rtheenvironment

His post: "Don't be a hypocrite. If you claim to care about the environment and are concerned about climate change, then stop eating livestock (ie stop eating meat). If you can't fathom the concept of not eating meat, then please STFU about climate change. "A widespread switch to vegetarianism could curb emissions by nearly two thirds and veganism by 70%."

My biggest issue I guess is him taking a complex topic like climate change and simplifying the solution to "everyone just needs to switch to vegetarianism" without considering economic barriers, culture, and the 6.2m jobs in the industry.

I think it ended up being an amplification of religiosity, as a lot of black churches were very against gay marriage and the like. After Obama came out in support of it, the numbers softened somewhat.

If you look at the breakdown by religion, black Protestants now as always fall between white "mainline" and "Evangelical" Protestants, which is about what I would've naively expected based on my limited knowledge of Protestants.

What I don't see, interestingly, is any apparent "Obama effect" on black Protestants.

That's a lot of people that might not be thrilled with the government saying you can't have your plan anymore, even if the government plan is better.

Look, I want single payer to pass. Because I want it to pass though, I think it's really important we take into consideration what resistance from the public there might be, so we can think of ways to address it. I think there's a better way to virtually eliminate the private insurance market than telling people they can no longer get private insurance plans.

All true, but at this point, we're nowhere near being able to actually tell people, "We're going to eliminate the private insurance market and take away the plans that you like." We do need to figure out how to sell that aspect of a single-payer system effectively, but for now, there's a Republican majority in Congress, a particularly loony Republican sitting in the Oval Office, etc, etc. I don't think anyone's jumping the gun by pledging support for a symbolic single payer bill that's not going to pass.

Only 4% of African Americans identify as non-religious. There is not going to be any poll with a margin of error less than 50% about their views unless you commissioned one specifically for it.

Equifax had patch 2 months before hack and didn’t install it, security group says

Hackers took advantage of an Equifax security vulnerability two months after an industry group discovered the coding flaw and shared a fix for it, raising questions about why Equifax didn't update its software successfully when the danger became known.
...

Installing the patch would have required rebooting the machine to apply it. Equifax declined to do so and records indicate that the machine had not been rebooted for 83 consecutive days. Federal regulators are now investigating whether Equifax is at fault. The Federal Trade Commission and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau have said they've opened probes into the hack.

This is an excellent point and why we need to have an open and honest discussion now. If the Democrats just lash Congresspeople onto a Medicare-For-All for the sake of party unity or ideological conformity, then we risk that, when the time comes to pass it, we'll have a mass desertion like the Republicans had. It's better to anticipate resistance where we could see it, deal honestly with objections and come to a workable consensus.
