Y'know, I'm just gonna go ahead and not believe that Oz was ever actually going to be Ozymandias. That was honestly never actually a thing in the stories and simply readers speculatin' about stuff like always. Looking back on his actions through the years, he was only ever truly fixated on Superman and his family and all that other Watchmen tie-in stuff was purely perfunctory.

The only weird, non-Superman-related thing Oz did was to kidnap Tim Drake, but even that might make sense if you subscribe to the theory that the other person in his cells is going to end up being Conner Kent.

Mister Miracle was cool as gently caress, so of course my store didn't have any when I got there. It was the only comic I came there to physically buy, but whatever. The internet provides~

Detective Comics was predictable and not too entertaining with just how dour it was. Basil can't get their absolution the way they want because they did something awful and traumatizing to a loved one, Anarky (who isn't black anymore/is white again??) is painted as a condescending brocialist who has a terrible secret that somehow undermines the communist Utopia they built under a literal ground zero for a terrorist attack, and Stephanie storms off just before Bruce can explain that Tim's alive--a zealous AI that achieved omniscience said so--so you can stop being so darn irrational and falling in with the wrong crowd

Metal was great. I remember explaining Darkseid War in another subforum and it melted a few brains, so I was glad to see Superwoman's baby Darkseid come back brandished as a weapon. It was just an incredibly bad idea to deliver the god of evil of one multiverse into the clutches of another, who didn't even need it to cripple the League's heavy hitters.

Action Comics, much like Superman, sucked. Again. I hope Superman was embarrassed he didn't recognize his dad, who had been playing the role of phantom stranger for a long while, whose face he carved out of crystal. He can see in every spectrum of electromagnetic radiation, and he was foiled by a hood that cast a big shadow? Even Libra wore a mask! Besides, we all know that Clark is going to choose his adopted home over his parents, so where is the tension in this story? Whether DC decides to let Oz stick around after a few issues or not?

A lot of the fun of the DCU is the ridiculous size and history. Doing the research. Looking up some obscure blip that nobody's though of for 40 years.
Just take "When Darkseid sent me back in time and the bat god saw me" at face value as a crazy old adventure. Actually reading Final Crisis wouldn't really make it any clearer ;)

That's because he should read the Return of Bruce Wayne mini that has him go through different time periods, as well as the arc of Morrison's Batman and Robin that takes place immediately after he returns chronologically.

I just read Metal #2 and even though it is heavily steeped in DC history, it is steeped in DC history that I have actually read so am really loving it, but mostly I am loving it for how outrageous the whole thing. One thing Snyder did in his Batman run is try go over the top in ways that I thought didn't always fit in with Batman, but having a big epic event like Metal really plays into Snyder's tendencies to go big. He is just going balls out in this story line and it is great.

One question though, who are all the Immortal people? I recognized Morgan, Ghul, and Vandal, but there was some guy with a chain around his neck and some old guy that I wasn't sure about.

Old guy is the N52 wizard Shazam. Dunno who his guard is.
There's also Uncle Sam, Phantom Stranger, Abel, Jason Blood.

I remember Cain being Vandal Savage came up during Infinite Crisis but I have never seen it referenced anywhere else since. I think Mary the Blood Queen was mentioned as being one of the Immortals but if so that would make her a lot "younger" than Ghul if you go according to I, Vampire chronology (which you should because the series was all kinds of awesome).

Uncle Sam is the dude on the far left in the panel with the Wizard, wearing the vest? I thought his current host or person assuming the identity was black? But it would only be like the Nth New 52 character reverted to or usurped by their white pre-Flashpoint incarnation so whatever DC. He'd be younger than Ra's too so maybe it's not even him? Who is the Wizard's pet gimp, anyways?

Is this why John Byrne took such profound pains to come up with some details involving a "birthing matrix" so Superman technically concluded his final stage of gestation in a soulless piece of technology but motherfucker he emerged from it on American soil

I remember the Superhero legal blog had an article basically saying that foundling law would cover Clark even if the Kents were unwilling to tell a little white lie that Martha had had a baby during a snowstorm.

DC article on Priest taking over JL with an art preview. I was wondering if it was just a fill-in stint revealed in that leak.
http://www.dccomics.com/blog/2017/09/15/a-watchtower-welcome-christopher-priest-climbs-aboard-justice-league?sf114402689=1

quote:

Aliens. Super-villains. Costly mistakes. This December, the threats faced by the Justice League are more dangerous than ever. But never fear, the League is in good hands—Christopher Priest and Pete Woods'.

The Eisner-nominated writer of DEATHSTROKE will take the reins of JUSTICE LEAGUE alongside artist Pete Woods (ROBIN, ACTION COMICS) with issue #34, kicking things off with a storyline called “Lost” in which the Justice League is left reeling after a sleep-deprived Batman makes an error that proves costly.

“I am really excited and very intimidated by the opportunity to step onto DC's largest stage—the Festival of Big Gun Characters Priest Has Never Before Been Invited To Write,” Priest shares. “It is my goal to mine a bit of new ore from this 50+ year old franchise by taking the tack Geoff Johns and I developed for Deathstroke: a ‘real world’ approach and exploring the characters’ humanity introspectively.”

“I cannot express enough how excited I am to be working with Christopher on the Justice League!” Woods explained. “The story we’ve got in store is something I think is a unique take. We want to give readers a different angle on the characters, their relationships, and just what it means to be a member of the Justice League.”

Deathstroke, which Priest helped relaunch as part of Rebirth, was nominated for an Eisner this year and has won fans and critical acclaim with thought-provoking stories like the standalone “Chicago” and the current “Defiance” storyline, which finds Slade Wilson seemingly turning over a new leaf.

“In my initial Deathstroke conversation with Geoff, I suggested that, since we were reimagining Slade Wilson's adventures, why not shape the new book more like what a Deathstroke feature or TV series might look like?” explains Priest. “It is my intent to bring that same sensibility to Justice League, taking a hard “what if these characters actually existed in the real world?” look and working in an area of the series premise that is less frequently tapped.”

That involves asking some hard and potentially redefining questions about the League itself.

“Is the Justice League still relevant?” Priest asks. “What are their goals and how do we define them? In the ‘real’ world, how would various societies around the globe view this pantheon of godlike beings?”

While Priest promises that the world’s greatest super hero team will continue to see plenty of action after he climbs aboard, he’s also particularly interested in look at the dynamics within the team. After all, with such a diverse, different group of heroes working together in highly charged situations, there are bound to be some fireworks.

“My goal is to treat the Justice League more like a workplace drama,” he reveals. “Although we will, of course, still have world threats, nasty villains (including Deathstroke!), and alien armadas, the League's greater challenge will be to define their place in this new and increasingly cynical age.”

But don’t worry, Justice League will still have plenty of lighter moments.

“Spoiler: In issue #1, Aquaman is driving a bus,” promises Priest. “That's all you really need to know.”

“I’m going to be bringing everything I have to this book,” concludes Woods. “It’s gonna be a fun ride! I love these characters.”

There's nothing special about me.
Man, looking back over Flashpoint and the New 52... there was a really cool concept with a Z-list villain in Flashpoint: electric guy, but he was in a raggedy costume because he was constantly on the run, because various countries wanted to capture him because he's basically a power source of IMMENSE potential, like a living super-generator.

And then he's in the first arc of the New 52 Suicide Squad, where he is shot like two issues in by Deadshot to have a supervillain to blame for a big incident. And then he shows up again later to reveal some lazarus protocol or whatever only to then have his head explode to show the process was imperfect/dangerous.

What I'm saying is, I think that Flashpoint was a story that was dumb but with good ideas, and was then followed by the New 52 which completely squandered what little good ideas there were.
