The best thing we bought for Irma was this https://www.costco.com/Goal-Zero-Yeti-1000-Lithium-Portable-Power-Station.product.100338966.html Essentially a huge cell phone battery charger with two AC plugs on it. When the power went out we still had essentially infinite phone charges and could run a real-deal fan. That fan was critical to our being comfortable because the AC died with the power. Our neighbors still don't have power and we've been letting one of them take it at night with one of our fans, then bring it back the next morning so we can charge it for them for the next night. Generators are cool but this battery can run right in from of your face all night with no downside. The bastard was really expensive though.

rdb posted:I sort of want a generator, and my wife told me to buy one, but the power just doesn't seem to go out here. The longest outage was 30 minutes. This was my initial dilemma, but I decided against a pto driven generator because I want something my wife can get going if I'm not home. Also spinning pto shaft and two young children, and I don't really want to leave the tractor out by the house. I think diesel makes the most sense for me, because I could get a diesel storage tank, have it refilled periodically with red dye fuel, and use it to run the tractor. It offers far cheaper run time in the genny, at least as much as I can figure...every website on the subject has different numbers. My main concern is keeping up the quality of the fuel long term. That's one big advantage of propane, it doesn't go bad.

What size generator would run 2-3 small electric heaters? Also I have a 1980's kerosene heater is it safe to use inside in an emergency?
|
# ? Sep 15, 2017 00:06 |

It just depends on how much power they draw. A baby 1500 watt generator could probably run 3 small ceramic space heaters relatively easily.

Electric resistance heaters are the most power hungry thing you can run. Most of them will run up to 1500w so 2-3 you need around 4000w sustained. I grew up with kerosene heaters in the house, the carbon monoxide won't be the thing that gets you, its tip over fires and curious children. E: if you want backup heat grab a "Mr Heater" from amazon and a couple 3 packs of 1lb propane cylinders from walmart. rdb fucked around with this message at 00:35 on Sep 15, 2017 |

My son has been wanting to play with solar stuff lately and I think a fun project would be buying some cells/tabbing wire and doing a DIY thing for fun. How much voltage do you want? Adding panels in series will add their voltages with current unaffected, while adding in parallel will add their currents with voltage unaffected. No real efficiency loss.

Thanks for generator/kero heater info all. I tried to run one tiny heater off a car in dryer and it wouldn't even attempt to do it during an ice storm when we were out for 2 days. I have parents old kerosene heater now just in case to keep us safe (though now I have the means I'd probably just go to a hotel). Congrats on the bus sale MGS

You can make voltage dividers to drop voltage easily if you want. More voltage means less current for the same power, and higher current means higher heat and/or bigger wires.

It is amazing to me that it hasn't worked its way to down to cheaper cars, it is a no brainer here in California. I'd pay a grand or two extra for that. Stressful as gently caress week. Wife had back surgery Monday, which hopefully alleviates years of random back-goes-out and 11-straight-months of pain from a "catastrophically" herniated disc (doctors words, not mine :P) Monday she was loopy, nauseous and just out of it. Spiked a fever Tuesday, lasted through the night, and thankfully she was able to kick it Wednesday morning or it would have been another night in the hospital. Got home Wednesday night, picked up her drugs, and then a night of not much sleep as we tried to find a way to make the bed comfortable. Thankfully we have 2 guest bedrooms with lots of pillows which were stolen to build her pillow-fort-strosity that she's comfortable sleeping on. I'm back at work today, and she's setup and hopefully good to go. Drove myself so if I need to leave I can. loving stressful having someone you love be in pain and there's not a god-damned thing you can do. ps Rhyno - hope your dad gets feeling better man
