Heavy Command Cruiser Mission 9: Operation Dead Sea – February 20th, 2016 Overview: The time has arrived. Emmerian Intelligence has located the Estovakian P-1112 Aigaion heavy command cruiser, and uncovered a critical flaw in its design. Garuda, Windhover, Avalanche, and Sky Kid Teams are dispatched to an intercept point in the Fuscum Sea to ambush and destroy the Aigaion. Guest Commentator: I am joined for this hands-down singular best Ace Combat level ever by the sparkly one himself, Herr Tog. And anyone who doesn’t think this mission is the best thing the franchise has ever done, I will personally fight. Got it? FENIKS Real Name: Lorenz Riedel Callsign(s): Age: 48 Sex: Male Nationality: Belka Signature Plane: Voice Actor: None They turn up in the strangest places, don’t they? Among other things, Lorenz Riedel is the designer and chief engineer of the Estovakian Air Force’s Aerial Fleet, consisting of the P-1112 Aigaion Heavy Command Cruiser, the P-1113 Kottos Electronic Warfare Cruisers, and the P-1114 Gyges Heavy Assault Cruisers. But Riedel isn’t some run of the mill Estovakian aeronautical genius—in fact he isn’t even Estovakian—but one of the world’s most wanted war criminals. An evil genius’s evil genius. When we last crossed paths with Riedel, he was flying for his homeland in the Belkan War in the unassuming, utterly inconspicuous role of Gault 7, the second-lowest post on Dr. Anton Kupchenko’s Gault Squadron. Despite being Kupchenko’s long-time apprentice, both in the South Belka Munitions Factory and the Belkan Air Force, his closeness to the Golden Woodpecker earned him no favours or special treatment from Kupchenko, as evidenced by his low standing on Gault’s original roster. After the Seven Pillars nuclear strike on the Belkan heartland by Waldmarr Rald’s government, Riedel joined Kupchenko along with the rest of Gault Team as he formed the terrorist organization A World With No Boundaries, joining Kupchenko’s leadership team alongside the likes of Joshua Bristow, Anthony Palmer, and Lawrence Foulke. Between the June 6th nuke strike and AWWNB’s first strike against the Allied Forces on Christmas Day of 1995, Riedel was put in charge of the reactivation of the SBMF’s abandoned XB-0 Hresvelgr heavy command cruiser, meant to be the centerpiece of AWWNB’s military power and its mobile command center. In getting the XB-0 skyworthy again, Riedel was able to reverse engineer his mentor’s masterwork, and was able to take copies of its blueprints (stolen from the SMBF by AWWNB members before the firm’s feigned shuttering) into exile with him following AWWNB’s defeat on New Year’s Eve of 1995. It was this experience and his apprentice work under Kupchenko’s wing that allowed him to design the Aigaion heavy command cruiser and her sister ships for the Estovakian Eastern Faction. As other members of AWWNB prepared to launch their stolen V2 MIRV against Osea, Sapin, Ustio, and other Allied Forces member states, Riedel and the rest of Gault Team followed Kupchenko into the B7R Roundtable mountains near the Belkan border in order to intercept and destroy the Demon Lord Cipher and his wingman Galm 2 PJ before they could reach the Avalon Dam complex and stop the V2 launch. While the majority of Gault Team, including Kupchenko himself, were killed in the engagement, Riedel survived his encounter with the Demon Lord and bailed out over B7R. With his status as a war criminal and terrorist agent about to become public knowledge after the UAF AWACS Eagle Eye reported the encounter with Gault to Allied Command, Riedel went into hiding rather than return to Belka. As the South Belka Munitions Factory reformed itself into North Osea Gründer Industries the following year, Riedel remained in the shadows for the rest of the 90s and early 00s. He was spotted in Oured by Osean authorities at some point during this time, but he slipped away before they could apprehend him. Rumor has it he spent the next decade hopping the globe acting as a black market arms dealer to various unstable nations such as Sotoa, East Clavis, Leasath, and Erusea until 2007. During the Estovakian Civil War, he approached Eastern Faction leader General Gustav Dvornik with the designs for a further upgraded version of the XB-0 Hresvelgr platform, a battlecruiser he dubbed “Aigaion.” Seeing the Aigaion as the key to victory over the Lyes United Front in the war, Dvornik accepted Riedel’s offer and put him to work constructing his new “Aerial Battle Fleet” with whatever funds and materials he could spare from the general war effort. Construction of the fleet would take six years to finish. Yet, when the Aigaion and her sisters took to the sky alongside the Strigon and Vampire Teams, they turned the tide against the LUF in an instant, and their overwhelming power helped the EF crush the majority of Lyes’s forces in under a week. When Dvornik formed his post-war government, The Generals, he rewarded Riedel handsomely from the spoils of the EF’s victory and promised other incentives to secure his continued loyalty and service to Estovakia, including potential plundered treasures from his next target: the Republic of Emmeria. In his later years, however, Riedel inherited his old mentor’s obsessive-compulsive and micro-managerial tendencies, especially when it came to his prized creation. Riedel insisted on being aboard the Aigaion and overseeing its operations every time she was in the air, much to the consternation of her actual command crew. During the Emmerian surprise attack on the Aigaion, Riedel remained on the cruiser until the last possible minute, abandoning the airship only after it became certain the ship was doomed. He flew off the Aigaion’s flight deck in an EAF Special Operations Su-33 and attempted to shoot down Garuda 1 Talisman and Garuda 2 Shamrock, who had been identified as the ones leading the attack on the Aigaion to avenge his fallen creation. He was instead shot down and killed by Talisman over the Galva Islands, finally accomplishing what Cipher failed to do 20 years ago. Picture of Dimitri Yuriev from Xenosaga mildly unrelated. PASTERNAK Real Name: Ilya Pasternak Callsign(s): Strigon 1 Age: 37 Sex: Male Nationality: Estovakia Signature Plane: Su-33 Flanker-D, [INFORMATION REDACTED] Voice Actor: Steve Van Wormer The Ladies Man. In the wake of Victor Voychek’s injury and grounding by Estovakian Command, Ilya Pasternak was given control over all Strigon Team operations for the foreseeable duration of the Emmeria-Estovakia War. However, political bureaucratic concerns kept him in the Estovakian homeland for much of the war while Strigon functionally operated under the command of Darijo Kovac in the Emmerian theater. With the death of Kovac and the destruction of the P-1112 Aigaion, Pasternak has been sent to Gracemeria by Dvornik and the Generals to take full command of Strigon in an effort to stem the mounting losses suffered by the EAF as the Emmerian forces, led by Garuda Team, press back towards the capital. Though sources close to Estovakian command claim he was ordered to Gracemeria personally by Supreme Commander Dvornik specifically to face Garuda Team and Garuda 1 Talisman in combat, most likely in response to the death of Dvornik’s daughter Irena at Garuda’s hands above Silvat. With Irena gone, the EAF couldn’t hope for a more perfect poster boy for their efforts in Emmeria. Even before he assumed command of Strigon Team, Pasternak was one of the air force’s most highly decorated officers, just under his mentor Voychek in terms of honours and accreditations. During the Estovakian Civil War, he was awarded the Golden Medal of Marksmanship, among other commendations, for his service to the Eastern Faction. During the war, he flew as Vampire 1, the leader of the EAF’s dreaded Vampire Team, an offshoot of Voychek’s Strigon Team. Together with Strgion, Vampire Team dealt many crushing blows against the Lyes United Front and its competitor factions, ultimately helping the Eastern Faction claim victory and assume complete control over the Federal Republic. After the war, Strigon and Vampire Teams were merged into a single unit, with Pasternak reporting directly to Voychek, despite running what was functionally an entirely separate squadron. As a person, Pasternak is a model of humility, warmth, and professionalism. Despite his proclamation of hatred for Garuda Team, in truth there isn’t a hateful bone in his body. If Victor Voychek is a proud father to the men under his command, then Ilya Pasternak is the cool big brother, a different kind of mentor and authority figure, but still someone the younger and less experienced members of Strigon can turn to for stability. With his deadly skill and commanding charisma, he will surely be a very dangerous opponent for Garuda and the Emmerians now that he has entered the fray. Along with Voychek, Pasternak basically forms the other half of Ace Combat 6’s Yellow 13 analog. While Voychek is the aloof father figure side of 13, Pasternak is the deadly enduring rival side of 13. Only, as you’ve probably tweaked to by now, neither of them actually connect the way OG 13 does because the other half of those signifiers don’t exist in 6. There is no one there for Voychek to form a fatherly bond with, and despite his endearing arival and proclamation of hated rivalry with Garuda, we only encounter him in combat once, as opposed to how Mobius 1 and Yellow 13 make each others lives miserable all across Shattered Skies. HECATONCHEIRES Literally the “Hundred-handed ones”. The Hecatoncheires were a trio of sea giants from Greek mythology consisting of Kottos, Gyges, and their leader Briareos—or more pointedly, Aegaeon. They were the children of the Titans Gaea (Earth) and Uranus (Sky), and helped to overthrow the Titans during the Titanomachy, where Zeus and the Olympians defeated his father Cronus and the Titans and imprisoned them in Tartarus, the gates of which Hecatoncheires became the guards of to ensure the Titans never escaped again. Aegaeon ultimately became the namesake of the Aegean Sea, the arm of the Mediterranean Sea separating the Greek peninsula from from the Anatolian peninsula in Turkey. Aside from here in Ace Combat, the Hecatoncheires have seen references in other video game series like Final Fantasy. A boss pallet swap called Kottos appears as an enemy in Final Fantasy X, and the Eidolon summon of Oerba Dia Vanille from Final Fantasy XIII is Hecatoncheir, notable for its numerous arms and hands. AIGAION The next evolution of the SBMF’s XB-0 Hresvelgr heavy command cruiser, and flagship of the Estovakian Air Force’s “Aerial Fleet”. Constructed over the course of 6 years by the then-Eastern Faction of the Estovakian Civil War, the P-1112 Aigaion became the EF’s trump card in their war with Lyes United Front, and the latest reminder to the world that the ghosts of Belka will never truly stay quiet, thanks her lead designer, Belkan ex-pat war criminal Lorenz Riedel, and his team of Belkan engineers, most of them headhunted from North Osea Gründer Industries both before, and especially after the Circum-Pacific War between the Osean Federation and the Union of Yuktobanian Republics. Measuring over twice the size of the original XB-0 prototype, the P-1112 Aigaion was, before its destruction, the single largest man made aircraft ever to take to the skies. The Osean Federation's Aerial Arsenal Ships, codenamed "Arsenal Bird", however, will ultimately eclipse the Aigaion in size once they are launched next year to defend the currently under construction International Space Elevator site at Selatapura. Held aloft by four massive thruster banks and an ingenious air frame design, the Aigaion, in theory, is capable of remaining in the air with up to three of the four engine blocks in a failure state. Even then, if all four engines suffered a catastrophic failure, the Aigaion could be glided to a deadstick landing with relative ease thanks to its redundant systems. The beveled underside of the Aigaion, resembling several ship hulls stacked together horizontally, belie its origins as a water-based craft. When not in the air, the Aigaion lands in the water and moves via an array of aquatic thrusters built into her ventral hull. Precise details on the Aigaion’s inner workings are a closely guarded Estovakian state secret. Riedel made certain his masterwork’s blueprints were properly archived, as opposed to the XB-0 and other SBMF designs, which now permeate the global black markets. While the Aigaion relies on standard jet fuel to power its engines, Emmerian Intelligence speculates that its other systems are possibly handed by an internal nuclear reactor. The Aigaion’s reliance on liquid fuel is ultimately its one fatal weakness. The vessel requires so much fuel to remain airborne that it needs to be refueled at least once a day by 6 dedicated EAF KC-10 Extender jets. During this midair refueling, the tankers block the Aigaion’s forward radar arrays while in UNREP position, effectively blinding the beast until they disengage. This leaves the Aigaion vulnerable to attack from an enemy daring enough to approach it from head on. Among the Aigaion’s other features are a fully functional flight deck with CATOBAR system and hangar facility in its core, effectively making it the world’s only airborne aircraft carrier. The EAF’s Strigon Team is officially based off the Aigaion. All Strigon planes bear the tail marking AI, denoting the Aigaion as their home carrier, despite the Su-33 not being a carrier-based jet under normal circumstances. Using its catapult launch system and tow cables, any aircraft capable of fitting on its flight deck can in theory land and take off from the Aigaion. In addition to its suite of point-defense anti-air cannons and missiles, the primary armament of the P-1112 Aigaion is her Nimbus burst missiles. Launched from a collection of silos on the dorsal side of her upper hull, the Nimbus cruise missiles can strike targets across a vast firing range, either guided remotely by tracking drones piloted from Aigaion, or dumb fired at close range against locally calculated firing coordinates. As Emmerian Intelligence has confirmed that the Aigaion is the only craft in the Estovakian arsenal capable of launching Nimbus missiles, with its destruction over the Fuscum Sea, the threat of the Nimbus against Emmeria has been ended for good. All other air support and electronic warfare duties are handled by her sister ships, the P-1113 Kottos and the P-1114 Gyges. KOTTOS A pair of dedicated electronic support and jamming aircraft designed to function in tandem with the P-1112 Aigaion and P-1114 Gyges to enhance their combat capabilities and defend them from any possible enemy attack. At roughly half the size of the Aigaion, the Kottos ESM cruisers are still the second largest currently existing self-propelled aircraft in the world, roughly equal in size to the original XB-0 Hresvelgr which they were based on partly. Lacking any proper weaponry, the Kottos instead house a massive suite of electronic warfare systems inside their armored hulls. While the Gyges and Aigaion protect it with their AA weaponry and flack screens, the Kottos enhances their radar and electronic warfare systems by remotely handling the majority of their firing computer calculations and targeting coordination for the Nimbus systems. Its jammer arrays also disrupt enemy communications, radar functionality and missile lock ons to blut any potential attack on the Aigaion itself. However, much like her sister ships, the Kottos crafts also require a generally prohibitive amount of fuel to keep aloft. While all five ships have seen increased flying time as of late by feeding off the captured Emmerian fuel reserves, their time as effective weapons for the Estovakians was diminishing as the Emmerians liberated more and more of their home territory and pushed them back into the resource-strapped Estovakian homeland. Though now that all five members of the Aerial Fleet have been destroyed, that point is quite moot. GYGES The two P-1114 Gyges battlecruisers were constructed from a pair of heavily modified P-1113 Kottos air frames. The electronic warfare systems were stripped away from the Gyges craft and in their place were installed hardpoints for mounting all manner of heavy air-to-ground and air-to-air ordinance. While capable of bombarding ground targets on its own, the primary role of the Gyges is to defend the Aigaion and Kottos from any air attacks. While the heavily armed Gyges does present an intimidating show of force from afar, in close combat situations, its air-to-air capabilities ultimately proved insufficient to protect the fleet from an eventual attack as the Emmerian Air Force’s attack wing easily overwhelmed the two assault ships with a limited number of planes. Despite their vast size, the Gyges were highly agile craft, capable of pulling high speed maneuvers in combat that neither the Aigaion nor Kottos were able to. A favored tactic of the Gyges commanders to defend their fellow ships was to intentionally ram attacking aircraft, using the reinforced bulk of the Gyges itself as a battering ram to splatter attacking planes against while taking comparatively minimal hull damage in return. During the Emmerian attack on the Aigaion, more planes were lost to impacts with the Gyges (accidental or intentional) than to any of the Aerial Fleet’s actual weaponry or to Strigon Team.

Feniks Lorenz Riedel 48, Male, Belka quote:Estovakian Central Forces Precinct Air Force Feniks is a unique Named Ace in many ways, as you can see in his Assault Record. He is our lone Belkan ace in the game, the only Assault Record associated with neither Emmeria or Estovakia. He’s one of a select group of characters who appear in more than one Ace Combat game, appearing as Gault 7 in Ace Combat Zero and then as Feniks here in Ace Combat 6. Barring non-canon material, he’s also one of only three characters who appear as a Named Ace in more than one Ace Combat (the other two being Ashley Bernitz (Grabacr) and Michael Heimeroth (Ofnir)). And lastly, Riedel is one of the few Named Aces who flies the iconic Su-27PD colours which made their debut in Ace Combat 2 on the game’s elite late-game enemies. Riedel’s appearance in Fires of Liberation also marks our first ACTUAL callback to Ace Combat Zero that’s an actual callback rather than a retcon. It’s easy to forget, since we’ve gone in chronological order rather than release order, that Ace Combat 6 came out only one year after Ace Combat Zero did, meaning both games were in development concurrently at one point. In fact, it’s actually been longer since the start of the Ace Combat Zero LP to the time of this post than it was between the releases of Zero and 6. Do you feel old now? The Aigaion's reliance on liquid fuel always seemed like such a weird oversight. I mean, it's an airship the size of a small airbase, even an A4W reactor or two would have enough output to keep it aloft for months. Holy poo poo. I kind of love the Aigaion. I wasn't sure what to expect when it showed up in the first mission; compared to Zero, which held Hresvelgr close to its chest and Morgan even closer, or 5, which had a dozen superweapons and all of them kind of insane, the Aigaion seemed kind of lackluster. Okay, the same gimmick as the submarines, but it flies? Cool. And now that I see it - now that I see it IN ACTION, dancing with the angels, I love it. It's massive. It's stupid. It's big and bold in a way that screams ABSURD to me in a way that the Hresvelgr really didn't and the submarines absolutely never did. Hresvelgr was a really big bomber; the submarines were really big missile submarines. The Arkbird and the SOLG were absurd but in a science-fiction nonsense way, a flying laser space glider and a sattelite cannon. This? This is Excalibur, a laser with a giant sprawling base full of rail-mounted heavy cannons and missile launchers and all kinds of other bullshit. This is the Helicarrier, HYDRA-style, sold to Yugoslavia Greece to start a war with Canada Rome. This is stupid on a beautiful, insane level, an in-your-face level that lacks any kind of subtlety in the same way that the narrative lacks any kind of subtlety, except instead of being dull and poorly-written it's exploding with character and also missiles. It's almost a knowing nod to the story; it's certainly the most over-the-top superweapon the player gets to see, because the Arkbird sure the hell didn't need a mid-air fuel depot and have room for a huge squad of aces and helicopters and...god. drat. Feniks showing up is a topper on the cake. The Belkan War never ends; it just goes into remission while its aces dance with the angels some more. It's super fun, the Gyges are hilarious bastards, and flying through the Aigaion's hangar during one of your attack runs is the sign of a true ace/angel. It's a good mission. I'm not going to lie: the moment I fought the Aigaion I realized that the Ace Combat series was something I wanted more of. For now (we'll see if 7 can top it) this is bar none the best superweapon fight in the entire series, and I refuse to believe otherwise

It really is, despite being more conventional (lol) than a lot of AC superweapons. Feels more like a bullet hell boss than a just an HP block with an instant death zone like most of the other bossfight style superweapons.

I think I can break down what makes it so good into a few good points: -Great Design: Face it, the Aigaion just looks cool, with a design reminiscent of a B2 stealth bomber but with a shiny chrome instead. Relatively simple, but memorable given its size. -Multiple Threats: You're not only fighting the Aigaion, but the Kottos and Gyges support craft and the Strigons. It makes the battlefield feel incredibly hectic and really gives you the sense that you're going against the odds. -Good Difficulty: The aforementioned threats are just enough to be challenging, but not enough to be impossible. Not to mention that the Aigaion whipping out its Nimbus missiles keeps it a threat even after it's lost most of its weapons. -A Feeling of Progress: Because you're knocking out the Aigaion's guns and engines with the rest of the enemies on the field, every gain whether it be a plane shot down or a turret destroyed feels massive, and not like you're just whittling down a health bar. -It's Just Pure Ace Combat: You've got a shitton of missiles, a superweapon in front of you, and an ace squadron guarding it. No bullshit about protecting allies or anything, it's you and your guys vs. them in a massive slugging match. And isn't what you really want?
