liberals don't believe that people can change or change their minds. that's why to them, republicans will only switch if the dems essentially become the republicans. that's why more militant liberals will get super upset when you suggest that maybe genociding every non-dem voter isn't the best idea - they honestly cannot fathom anything other than utter capitulation as a way of appealing to non-dem voters.

it's also why liberals are so enamoured with the idea that education will rid the world of racism and the like. children are a clean slate. but once someone becomes tarnished by doing a racism or voting republican, they're written off forever. and that's a whole lotta people to write off.

I still talk to people every so often who think the only way forward for the Dems is to abolish the electoral college so rural votes count less

as though you could get enough of a government majority to abolish the electoral college without winning some red states first

It's a really cynical and defeatist attitude that people settle on because if good things aren't possible they're absolved of having to work for them

and yeah also a lot of the hillaryman attitude in 2016 can be summed up as "if you don't already agree with me you are a Bad Person and not worth my time oh no why am I losing"

the liberal political and pundit class dont actually believe anything like that anymore. they only believe in courting the capitalist class and only then getting votes from the rubes so that they become the favored party of capital

everything makes a lot more sense when you understand this

you dont need a constitutional amendment to base the electoral outcome on popular votes instead of the current setup.

you just need states with a majority of the electoral votes to legally bind themselves to pledge for the popular vote winner. this can all be done at the state level.

of course, this is still such a stupid and ridiculous endeavor and ignores the fundamental reasons why the democratic party is in the shitter. the primary reasons definitely do not include the electoral college

Yeah well you need to win state legislatures to do that, which lmao good loving luck.

If HRC were POTUS, enough states'd go red that she'd be dealing with a Constitutional Convention to enforce a balanced budget and a repeal of the 13th Amendment.

loquacius
Oct 21, 2008

Yeah you need state governments to get a Constitutional Convention and to make a majority of states change their laws. Either way making those states' votes worth less is not a good campaign platform.

having 2 senators/state plus a minimum 1 house rep w a capped total house size gives rural voters outsize influence in the federal govt w/o also giving them such disproportionate say in the prez election

thats not even factoring in things like gerrymandering or the ordering of primaries, which also serve to limit the power of the nations major cities

It never stops being impressive that media covering the news was considered "biased coverage" aimed at Clinton. The whole pundit class gushed all over her, they gave her detractors all the epithets they could muster, they condescendingly invited her non-supporters to their talk shows to talk down to them and explain why she was a good candidate...

But that apparently wasn't enough!

if you switched to natl popular vote for electing potus, and made the house scale to population (ofc keeping the 1 rep minimum), did away w gerrymandering, forced states to provide fair and convenient access to polling places, and changed the ordering of primary contests

if you did all of that

rural states would still have a greatly disproportionate say in the executive branch thanks to the senates authority over prez appointments, not to mention the implementation of prez agenda thru the legislative process

I mean, you could say this same thing about hoping Bernie just stays in the Senate with a link to his single-payer bill. I've been done saying Warren should have a Harry-Reid-style career instead of trying for the Presidency since they gave Reid's job to Schumer.

If a Warren presidency was accompanied by a left-populist wave of Sanderista legislative elections, theoretically she could set the congressional agenda to get a whole bunch of bills like this introduced all the time

The President usually has sway over their party unless they're Trump-level unpopular.
