Fair enough. I of all people should keep that in mind. He is correct that feeding the homeless is a bit of a personal issue for me, but then I've been hungry enough to know how important it is to never forget what hunger feels like or what it does to people. I can totally believe he is an EMT, I just wish he would apply the logic structures that are so fundamental to his profession to other aspects of his life.

Reposting from Trumpthread:Zoro posted:Let us move on from reheating an old plate of meatloaf from three weeks ago to talk of more pressing concerns: healthcare. The Graham Bill has serious prospects of potentially passing, especially with the added pressure of knowing the deadline is coming up. We need to start making phone calls. I have done so myself, but I live in a blue state so it's not doing much. If you red state individuals can begin encouraging your friends and family as well as participating yourself in some preliminary calls, we can certainly begin to nip this in the bud. Waiting for the CBO score may be too late: if they're smart, they'll ram it through the second that thing is done and it will be like the house vote all over again. I think it was in this thread earlier where we hashed out the Paul/Collins/Murkowski sticking point for the bill as-is. This is still zero reason to treat its failure as a given, and any "lol it'll never pass" before October actually hits needs to get loving quashed. The venom of the GOP may vary in its potency, but a snake is a snake and you should never bury the thought that they'll turn on you to bite if they have the opportunity. This bill has it all: the return of pre-existing conditions, defunding planned parenthood, the death of medicaid and on top of it all a bunch of chuds calling it Obamacare light. There's a lot that can be used to bludgeon whatever jackass represents your state. I'm probably beating a dead horse with this post, and I'm fully aware of what actual influence the American public has on policy. On the other hand, this effort is effectively a push for state-sanctioned murder via austerity, so I'm not really especially bothered if I belabor the point.

So it's been a good run and I don't regret that vote in the least.

Dead Reckoning posted:Give me a call when you've solved the reality of limited resources. The issue isn't the reality of limited resources, it's the distribution and triaging of resources. We certainly have the resources to feed and clothe every man, woman and child on the planet, but we've "decided" that hedge fund managers, CEOs, bankers, oligarchs, their children and other "job creators" deserve over 40% of our total wealth in the US (up to 75% in Russia!). Globally the top 10% hold 85% of all wealth. Arguments to the contrary are really disingenuous when 1) most of the wealth is concentrated in the hands of a very small portion of the population and 2) most of that wealth isn't being used for anything except collecting rents, so to speak. Dead Reckoning posted:Oh cool, all we need to do is totally re-orient our economy without any of the corruption, waste and violence that normally accompanies such affairs. I'm sure glad we don't have to think about scarcity any more. You child. Observing that there is enough wealth in the economy to do what you want is like observing that we have enough steel in the world to build a ladder to the moon: pointless and naive... At this point, given the insane level of wealth disparity, corruption, waste, poor resource utilization, violence and increasing levels of all the previous that already pervades our economic system... I would say that yeah, we should be working to re-orient our economy as quickly as possible. Any legitimate cost-benefit analysis would be looking at how throughly broken our current system is, and you clearly aren't.

A hurricane needs water over 25°C to keep it going. Once the core goes cold it becomes an ordinary low pressure system. Some storms do hit the right conditions to maintain near hurricane-force winds all the way to the continent, but it's very rare. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tropical_cyclone_effects_in_Europe
