I'm from that tornado that got shot down, and I say poke the bear! At least we didn't die with a full missile load. Also Dropbear will re-up if they survived the crash, or their previously unreferenced identical twin Dropbear II will join HG to seek revenge against...global instability. Or whatever. thatbastardken fucked around with this message at 04:25 on Sep 18, 2017 |

I think it's a good idea to support the US Navy and if we can do so without poking the bear so much the better. It'd be nice to have the navy owe us, Growlers, Prowlers and even Rhinos could really help make good our losses and increase our capabilities. If we can come up with a good way to help without going hot then I think that seems like a reasonable course of action

Voting for Don't poke the bear. The Russians have all the good planes. well the good -cheap- planes. We have a lot of possible Soviet inventory - we don't want to close off our ability to get more. Russians have decent planes but more importantly decent -cheap- planes. And we've already done the USN a favor, so if they want something from us they had better give us some real decent stuff. Engaging Russian military jets or harrassing a carrier battlegroup wtih flybies in return for 'possibly getting to use US airspace' does not count.

CourValant posted:I don't think it quite works like that; there's no confusing a surface contact with a submerged contact. Boooo, okay. Definitely Don't Poke The Bear then. Because we need new gear and Eurotrash, while charming and plucky in its own way, is clearly no longer sufficient as primary conflict resolution hardware. We've also just lost a significant chunk of our combat assets and we do NOT need to be getting into a shooting fight with the goddamn Russians on top of the casualties we've taken over this shitheap island.

Holy gently caress. Don't poke the bear, The Americans have decent subs, they'll be hard to find even for the Russians' (presumably) competent ASW-stuff . Get that C-130 to Savoonga, pick up Cobbie et. al. and get out.

quote:The second command called for their Tornado to go to CAP Dropbear started to feel just a tad nervous. Sure, there were only a couple of hostile planes in the sky, but between her and her slightlymad pilot they only had two IRIS-T heatseekers and a couple of cannon - not a great match for an F-15 of any vintage, let alone the modernized birds the SMARF opposition were flying. The early mission had gone fairly well for the strike duo - Damocles pod recon and shooting up some missile artillery, smooth as silk - but as the poo poo hit the fan and the real fighters started to go down they were forced closer and closer to the front line. In the end the missile that hit them wasn't even intended for their plane - a Sidewinder that had been launched by an F-15K that was knocked out of the sky immediately after acquired them as a target. Flares and violent evasive maneuvers hadn't helped, and the explosion blew their engine apart 35,000 feet over the Bering Strait. They ejected safely, but with the dubious choice of landing in the frigid water or on a hostile island that they had just been bombing. Even though she knew SM couldn't possibly hear she yelled at him during the long fall: "Next time I'm flying, you mad bastard!"

We've got birds in the air, we've got birds refueling and re-arming. As far as exit goes we're going to assume that once we've acquired the nuke we just need to escape. If it's via boat we might have to swat aside some Redneck Flotilla near Alaska and slip down the inner passage. If it's by air we can get passage through Canadian airspace. At the close of this operation we will go into the next procurement round. Ivanov's are quite worried about future prospects, K&P is all smiles and sauerkraut, and BFLM has got one hell of a deal for us. Maybe. If the manager OK's it.

Honestly, I think we're coming out ahead if we get a good deal from BFLM and lose access to Ivanov. Russia has a few capabilities that could be hard to match, but US gear is scary competent and with a better deal we can fill out a lot of capabilities. We do probably want some more meteor slingers though. That is a severely good missile.

I'm working on an post. This'll cover Russian assets, expected hostiles, our available airframes and potential tasks. Make no mistake Hired Goons. We are outgunned. But we might not be out classed. Because of the complexity and distances involved I'm thinking this'll be all hands on deck mission with fresh airframes. Tankers will be tanked. Crews fresh. Missiles reloaded. Damage duct taped. You get the idea. On Savoonga Cobbie is wrastling up (or whatever the Aussie term for stealing a truck is) a vehicle to haul the broken rear end device and get it the gently caress away from the Alabama National Guard PMC. The intel report will spell out Russian air assets. Potential bases. And of course our objective. But first, how do we get it out? A cargo plane with a nailbiting landing or do we drive the Karel Doormans to the pier and Dunkirk it all? The plane is guaranteed to get on the ground but may suffer damage which delays it from taking off. The Karel Doormans have one path out and that's south through the Aleutians and eventually the inside passage. Which is kind of where the nasty Russian battlecruiser might catch it. So what say ye Hired Goons? One if by Air? Two if by sea?
|

Two if by sea We're flying Top Cover for the USN anyways, might as well use those submarine assets to help us all escape, including the Dutch. Heck, we could even use ourselves as bait; lure the Russian Task Force into the inner passage, right into the subs. It'll be gloriously, 24 torpedoes 'slamming' across the ocean at 120 mph.

riggghhhtttt, if we actually have all our stuff avaliable, heres the rough break down of A2A/A2G assets: Off To Poke The Bear 3 x Gripens, 4 Meteors each at 75 NM range 2 x Falcons, 4 AMRAAM Cs each at 60 NM range 3 x Phantoms, 4 AMRAAM Bs each at 45 NM 2 x Kfirs, 2 Derbies each at 40 NM Probably the Prowler to try and gently caress with targetting in the unlikely event the escorts are only armed with Alamos. Probably at least one tanker + our AWACS? Saving Cobbie/The Dutch 7 Tornados that can be fit with either 9 x Brimstones, 2 x Sea Eagles, or Storm Shadows 2 AMXs that can sling 2 JDAMs each, or Mavericks/LGBs if this bloody weather stops. 1 Mirage that basically can only iron bomb things, unless the weather lightens enough for lasers. 1 Atlantique that can spot amphib Rednecks elements for everything else to shoot, can theoretically drop LGBs on land if the weather lightens up enough for lasers to be workable. Could be a workable recon asset here, though it'd mean risking MANPADs. Nick Esasky fucked around with this message at 23:20 on Sep 18, 2017 |
