idk but I'm pretty sure walmart was the first one to "pay" people using those loving green dot cards that have fees for withdrawing money (that go back to walmart in some way I'm sure) and expiration dates and poo poo

A portrait of these hourly pay scales becomes even more pathetic when you consider that regional airline pilots, who are paid only from the time the airline leaves the gate to the time it arrives at the destination, only are on the clock on average about 21.5 hours per week.

Not sure about food stamps, but one Walmart had a food drive to help out its underpaid associates.

ugh i forgot about this loving thing

they wind up with nothing!!!

except literally every one of their needs and wants met, maxing out their 401k, and iirc the math doesn't add up so there was like an extra $10k that the guy didn't even assign to anything

a) no they weren't
b) you mean like a ton of the lovely local banks people would be using instead, if they could even get a bank account and not get locked into check cashing/payday loan places?

and the expiration dates are effectively meaningless, it's like thinking all the money in your normal debit card vanishes when the replacement card comes in. there is a continuous account behind it that doesn't go away just because your particular prepaid reloadable debit card needs to be replaced

theres an entire subgenre of articles about how learning how to budget and save is the secret to becoming rich, which is of course nonsense. the target audience for them is never actual poor people, but rather rich people who want to be assured that poverty is a matter of individual choice and bad decisionmaking - that the working poor are poor because they spend all their money on spinning rims and $200 tennis shoes, the silly dillies. nothing systematic, generational, or racial about poverty - its all because Those People fritter away their money on avacado toast and coffee pour-overs.

someone (hph?) needs to post that sample budget that mcdonalds briefly distributed to their workers to help them climb out of poverty.

i'm almost certain all those articles are just ghost written bank PR firm pieces to convince people to put money in banks and talk to their shady as poo poo sales people

also there has been a decade-long all-out war between the corporations, the pilots union, and the avionics union, it's so loving ugly and bad and stupid

I'd accept 1 car, because there are a lot of things for which public transport is just ill-suited, like large grocery runs, commutes that don't fit the transit schedule/route, or simply moving. Two cars, OTOH, is the exclusive province of bourgeoisie scum.
