re: cubiio, kickstarter figured out that this poo poo is going to blind a whole ton of users, so they put their foot down and forced the company to include a laser shield:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/880456201/cubiio-the-most-compact-laser-engraver/posts/1975824

never mind that this is a good idea or that it would be trivial to hack off the interlock sensor and just superglue it to the cubiio, have a tide of saltiness:

originally they were selling the cubiio starting at $299 without the shield, and you'd need to upgrade to the $499 pledge tier to get it, btw

same, i had the displeasure of meeting fans before i ever read the thing so who knows if it is good or not, i have no urge to ever find out.

in other videogame kickstarter news, divinity original sin II came out and is basically exactly what i wanted. my physical backer rewards (i backed at the tier for a physical box with art books and such) are still in transit here, but so far no regrets from backing a videogame kickstarter which seems above par.

Yearly glowforge update: they have been shipping for a few months. Slowly. People seem generally pleased with their basics - though software maturity is holding back some features still (including some major ones for the pro, like indexing for the pssthrough slot). Their current estimate is to have all initial backers (first 30 days) shipped by the end of October. However, their definition of shipping has become vague over the past few months.

Their original claim is that it's "shipped" when they send you the email about whether or not you want it shipped now, or later if you also preordered an air filter or for some other reason. Actual shipping of the item can be as far as 6 weeks later. However, Dan has very explicitly stated that it would be the less bullshit definition of shipped for the October 31 deadline. According to their status updates, they are currently shipping (definition 1) day 9 of basic Glowforge's, and day 1 of pro units (the user ran self reporting spreadsheet is less optimistic). Also note that they have shipped no international units. If they're still going to give a 6 week lead time on those emails to actual shipping, they'd need to send days 10-30 their shipping notices today in order to meet Dans promise (definition 2)

the only good part about homestuck is that the creator sold a bunch of "have your own character appear in the comic!" slots and then in the next frame nuked them all.

so yeah your special "original character, donut-steal!" troll thing is now officially canon but at the same time is officially dead.

he was completely up front about it too. $10,000 to have your fan troll become Canon, $100,000 to have your fan troll become Canon and not be killed in the next panel

yes that means two people paid $10,000 each to a Kickstarter for a video game of a webcomic

this seems like it would require either the casual disregard for money i only expect from the born-wealthy (who would never have student loans) or the kind of single minded devotion i only expect from literal cults. How do you end up being this person? kudos to whoever talked him/her out of it.

yeah but they got another group of devs to come in and make a game. it's episodic so the game that's out right now is very short but idk if the original kickstarter said it was episodic
