The actual answer is going to the doctors/er over every little thing or even nothing at all, because it costs you personally nothing. I guarantee that this happens because I've seen it in my family. Oh Alice has a stomach ache? Better call the ambulance, they'll figure it out! Of course everything gets abused to a degree and edge cases like these aren't an argument against affordable healthcare.

On the other hand, I've had three coworkers in the past month get hospitalized because they refused to go to the doctor before their respective conditions got worse. I'm in a country with free healthcare, they were just dumbasses.

Let's say you're the dictator of your country, and you're asked what to do in the following situation: A person comes into the hospital with a problem that may be life-threatening. They are poor and say that they can't really afford the cost of a doctor diagnosing/treating them, and also they don't have private insurance. Do you: (a) turn them away like a heartless bastard, condemning them to possible death, and possibly spreading disease further (b) treat them, pay for it with public funds, and then try to recoup the cost by hounding them with repo men for the rest of their life, until they die and the government is left with an amount unpaid that ends up effectively paid by taxpayers (c) treat them and just be content to let the nation's treasury pay for it, again effectively spreading the cost among taxpayers, and as a bonus, making it easier for poor people to access healthcare decreases the spread of disease and improves the economy (a) makes you an unbelievable rear end in a top hat that most people wouldn't hesitate to call "evil", (b) doesn't work very well and increases the cost because of the extra bureaucracy and also makes you kind of an rear end in a top hat, (c) is all upside and will make your people love you. So why the gently caress do right wing pundits and politicians in America insist on (b) and talk like (a) is their wildest dream?

I've lived in countries both with and without a national healthcare system, and the waits I've had for GP and specialist care in the USA were longer than in other countries if anything. I don't know if I've just been lucky or if that argument is complete horseshit based on Americans' ignorance of the rest of the world and own unearned sense of superiority, but I'm leaning towards the latter explanation.

how do you make an appointment with a GP? wont you be better/dead within a month? I was sick last week and went to my GP. I called him up at 8:30AM and said I need an appointment, he said how does 11:15AM sound? I was home with a packet antibiotics by 12:15PM whole thing cost me $40

It's actually a pretty functional system. You see, insurance companies get very wealthy by charging a ton and providing the bare minimum of actual healthcare coverage. They then use this money to lobby the government to keep alternative systems from becoming viable and to prevent changes that would require them to provide more coverage, and also to run PR campaigns to convince people that this is a very good system and better than any other alternatives. This allows them to keep operating and making even more money, and the cycle continues sustainably. It just works!

In my part of Australia and I assume they are elsewhere - we have 'Housecall Doctor'. A bulkbilling service you can call 24/7 like ordering a pizza. An hour or two after you call, their driver/security arrive and treats you. It's pretty good. An ex-coworker of mine does the driving and is essentially a limo driver. he loves the job apart from the usual druggos trying to score prescription meds.
