The whole site is great, plenty of awesome science stuff that would be totally dangerous if used incorrectly.

Speaking of, let's get back to the most amazing OSHA saga and my favorite youtube series ever:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyclGmRHMQw&list=PL-KKIb8rvtMSrAO9YFbeM6UQrAqoFTUWv

Summary: Guy buys a nuclear missile silo, wants to make a house in it. Dude has no clue what he is doing and the entire series is fraught with the juiciest disasters.

The entire thing is a trainwreck and he has more episodes to watch! :neckbeard: I seriously don't even have a favorite episode. Like right off the bat he's trying to dig down to the door, has the equipment he is using collapse into the hole. Then he leaves it for a month or so and learns that water tables are a thing. Whoops, need to pump out this 50 ft hole I dug now! Hope the whole place isn't flooded, hahaha. Every single episode is OSHA gold, a great cautionary tale. I remember at one point they are exploring the silo and the guys voice suddenly changes pitch and afterwards he's like "so today we learned that we need gas detectors when going in enclosed underground spaces." Almost asphyxiated myself, whoops!

I am giddy right now catching up. I'm on episode 18 where he explains his DIY electrical wiring. He opted against a ground fault because it kept tripping when water got into it and leaving him in a pitch dark silo. So gently caress it who needs a fault? I haven't been electrocuted yet.

Isn't the propellant they use for those missiles unbelievably toxic?

I wondered how much they worried about cleanup when they were decommissioning these sites.

Titan II was propelled by hydrazine + N2O4 so yeop. I think spilled hydrazine breaks down into less toxic components pretty quickly though (really quickly if the spill also involves the oxidizer).

There's a whole chunk in Command and Control about how the fuel for those missiles was horribly bad for humans and other living things, though I think Schlosser focused more on the parts that killed people by direct exposure.

The land was likely sold off for pennies on the dollar under condition that Uncle Sam isn't liable for anything you dig up trying to make it useful. Earlier this year one in New York with functioning blast doors and other equipment went on the market for $3 million. Ruins like his are bound to be much less.

We made hundreds of them seemingly every time a new ICBM design came around and have been selling off outdated ones since the 60s. A lot of the cheaper ones on the market are ones someone bought back then for the attached acreage, with no intention of using the actual structures.

Yeah, there's really not much you can do with a dubiously accessible at best 200 foot deep hole in the ground full of ruined military gear. And usually brackish water.

There's abandoned mineshafts all over the place, c'mon son. Much closer to actual caves as well.

Sometimes all you need to do to find them is go for a walk in the bush in country Victoria :(

It gets worse: The guy doesn't understand that not only is the water table high, the concrete in those silos was known to seep water. Badly.

So that Silo is probably full of not only water, but 30+ year old rust, and the contractors that were hired to remove and demilitarize the silos were....very hasty in their methods.
