jojoinnit posted:Its not really a dumb move in marketing but I couldn't think of a better thread. Mainly this really drives home for me that Gen X have replaced Boomers for this type of cultural reference: I dunno, I kind of like it. Also they're finally making a sequel so it's not just a 30+ year old movie. Man, I hope Meg Ryan's in it as Gooses' boozy widow. A Star Wars like scene with Maverick getting otherworldly advise from Gooses' ghost would be tits. Did Val Kilmer ever get over his throat cancer? Because Iceman with an electronic voice box would also be cool.

The lamb commercial gets a D for execution, but the strategy takes what strikes me as a really good angle for lamb generally.

Man, Clone High was really good for being a low budget MTV cartoon. Curse you, Indian High Commission, can't we have a bizarre ADHD Ghandi clone making a buddy cop movie with George Washington Carver and his anthropomorphic peanut for a high school film festival just this once?

It reminds me of the movie that placed a two star review directly between the two characters on the poster's arms, making it look like a covered four star.

That Mother! ad would be better if the opposing statements were all from the same publication as their opposites.

Mother! is a pretty mediocre-to-bad film that's hard to watch and not particularly great at reaching it's own point. Having said that, I'd still be tempted to see the film just based on that poster. I'd call it decent marketing for anyone not familiar with it. drat shame the film is torture porn set to a soundtrack of someone flinging a hammer at piano strings.

I liked the Mother marketing. The trailers before IT had an old school exploitation vibe and even included a "buy your tickets in the lobby after the movie" which is just phrased weird and something no one would be ever actually do. Kind of like Hitchcock movies that warned people with heart conditions to stay away. At no point during the trailer did anyone get the impression this was going to be a 'good' film or have characteristics like 'linear plotlines' or 'sense'.

It was a big mistake doing a huge release for the movie. They should have done it like Black Swan where it has a very limited release in the big cities and then try to get Oscars for it.

I wanna applaud them for taking a gamble on a large release for such an arthouse film I just wish it wasnt such a bad one.
