In the first couple hours of TR2013 there's an attempted sexual assault which instantly turns Lara Croft from a posh archaeologist grad into a bow-wielding murder machine.

A bunch of the notes are basically a pewdiepie transcript with more tryhard pseudo-biblical language.

Almost oddly enough the like one present lady (Discounting the giant axe wielding lurch) doesn't have it happen though, just a bunch of writing and then your stupid molestation priest flashbacks.

The Stick of Truth had this funny segment where you're collecting audio logs from a man whose slowly turning into a zombie Nazi and it's just him questioning why he's bothering to leave this scattered around instead of trying to escape. I can't remember a game where the notes are that self aware. My favorite are when they end abruptly like "I think I hear something behind m--" like the monster was kind enough to add a few ellipses or dashes to their note.

Rachel got mixed up with Frank shortly before she disappeared, their relationship appears to have been more than friendly but it's unclear as to if Rachel was just using him for drugs, Chloe didn't know about it until they search Frank's van in Episode 3 and becomes incredibly jealous when she finds out. Chloe and Rachel knew each other for three years prior to Max's return to Arcadia Bay and it was strongly suggested although never outright stated that they were involved romantically, the extent of which I suppose will be determined by this prequel.

I've wasted all my brainpower remembering insignificant minutae about this stupid game.

Tomb Raider 2013 was 3 parts snuff film where Lara has to be brutalized throughout the entire plot and somehow not get rabies, lock jaw or who knows what kinds of diseases were in the poo poo-filled, rusty metal infested brown water that she dragged her constantly impaled torso through before climbing up a frozen mountaintop; and one part perfect hair simulator that kept looking beautiful despite how she hasn't bathed in like weeks.

Like there are so many death scenes in that game that make me worry there was a really creepy programmer that kept a lot that were too gross for focus groups and probably wouldn't fly even in an actual horror game.

Didn't Crystal Dynamics mention something about how they took a lot of inspiration from The Descent for TR 2013? I do remember there also being one direct visual callback to Apocalypse Now around the last quarter of the game as well.

To me, it felt like the ultimate problem with the game was that they couldn't pitch the story as a pulpy, fun adventure story (even if it would probably suit the material better) because the public would just dismiss it as a pale retread of Uncharted with Lara Croft, so they had to go the gritty route, which had its share of problems.

The torture porn and survival stuff in TR2013 is nearly all in the first couple of hours, which made me think someone in the dev team had the sense to put the brakes on things and transition to a slightly lighter action shooter.

Though there is the scene where Lara cauterizes her gaping chest wound with a white-hot arrowhead long after sepsis should have more or less dissolved her.

The sad thing is, there already is a new uncharted game that basically is an unofficial Lara Croft game.

I don't know if its mostly front ended, at least for the survival stuff. Girl can somehow turn human bones and 60 year old pieces of metal and make a perfectly functioning ghetto grenade launcher and modern HK417 as well as somehow smelt a steel Compound bow.

I meant more in terms of the scenes where she hunted for food and took shelter from the elements, etc. After the shooting starts Lara is immune to temperatures and subsists solely on the deathcries of angry men.

"The entire history of this incarnation is one of temporal orbits, retcons, paradoxes, parallel time lines, reiterations, and divergences. How anyone can make head or tail of all this chaos, I don't know."
My cousin wrote TR 2013, and she was going for drawing out Lara's story development. There was some stuff from previous writers that unfortunately stayed, like the sexual assault/first kill, so they intended to try and make it a sort of corner that Lara turns.

quote:

What the writing team didn’t foresee was that Lara’s first kill would cause controversy long before Tomb Raider’s release. The scene, in which Lara murders in self-defence after being cornered by a predatory scavenger, was interpreted as an attempted rape by both viewers of an early trailer and a producer on the project.

Crystal Dynamics quickly released a statement to say that sexual assault was “categorically not a theme” of the game - but the condemnation continued in opinion pieces. Pratchett’s involvement had yet to be announced, and she was frustrated to see her story misconstrued.

“I don’t think we expected it at all,” she says. “Once you play it in context, it makes a lot of sense and isn’t her ‘bitten by a radioactive spider’ moment. This isn’t when she turns into a tomb raider - this is when she happens to have to deliberately kill a human being for the first time.”

You really have to be stretching to pretend that scene isn't deliberately coded as an assault scene. You can blame the modelers and cutscene directors if you want but that is exactly what that scene is.

I remember some interview when TR 2013 first came out that defended the rape stuff as being necessary to the story since it was unavoidable part of being human.

Having to piss and poo poo is also a unavoidable part of being human, but the game developers seem to have been fine with leaving out the part where Lara has to pop a squat half way through the game.

So with PARTY HARD 2 coming out possibly soon, will we enter into a retro 1980s slasher sub genre soon? I kind of want a Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 of horror games where its still a survival horror, but really campy and intentionally cheesy as it tries to horrifically murder you.

You might like Dusk which is releasing in October. It's not survival horror but it's horror-themed (hell, the first enemy type is a masked chainsaw-wielding hillbilly), can be surprisingly creepy at times, and is fun as hell. It's oddly dissonant with the tone of the next 9 hours of Tomb Raider as it becomes much lighter when the rest of the cast is reunited and Lara instantly transforms into a stone cold killer.

He rubs his hand across her face, smells her, and does the chin-grab you see in literally every piece of media when a predator is aggressively checking out a woman's face. If they didn't want to play up the creeper angle they could've just had him toss Lara with the other prisoners they had lined up and she breaks free when he's escorting her or something.

I'd say the dialog speaks more than the body language and probably why they left it unsubtitled. He says (in Russia mind you) Lara smells like his sister and when Lara bites him he says something along the lines of "she was a bitch, too" before killing you.

There is a jarring delineation in the game between the intro scenes, the part where you're sliding down the river, and the rest of the game. Both were used heavily in promotional material, both involve violent deaths, and they're both largely scripted areas while the rest of the game is like an arcade-y Arkham Asylum slash Metroid action game with your buddies back on the boat.

Yeah, even if you don't know Russian (as I don't) there's stuff in his tone that comes across. Plus everything al-azad just said.

I'm also prepared to concede that it might be I'm just so used to rape now being the standard way in fiction to raise the stakes, establish how evil the antagonist is and to create a purpose for the protagonist in the form of revenge.
