I'd guess she was a smalltown girl who wanted to leave for somewhere bigger but didn't have any options so she took up whoring to raise the money to leave and now she's just sticking to what she knows because she never thought any further than that.

Hey, I'm probably looking too far into this, but does anyone know of any director/writer/whoever commentary about Deadwood's opening sequence? I guess there isn't any way to say this like I'm not coming off peacocking, but gently caress it, I'm too curious - I'm asking because the opening credits in this show end the same way Deadwood's did, with the buildings wavering in the reflection of a puddle. It isn't the first time David Simon referenced Deadwood so I'm wondering if he's saying something there.

Somehow C.C. is my favorite character to watch on the show. The actor, Gary Carr, hasn't had any major roles before this (at least none I recognize) but he's absolutely killing it. He's just so unpredictable and sinister and I like the way he talks. The whole show is really good. I liked Frankie demolishing the juke box and poo poo because gently caress that Irish mobster.

drat I miss all that subtle poo poo, y’all are better show-watchers than I am. I did finally notice method man at least. It was hard not to notice David Krumholtz, that fella has put in some weight, but maybe did it for the show to look more like a smarmy, grimy porn producer? I like so far how Vincent is a hapless loser kind of guy. Like in the first episode when he walks in to find his wife (Zoe Kazan?) in the bar, he backs down from the guys. It’s just nice to have a main character who isn’t some kind of infallible badass who was going to stare them down; instead he’s just kind of an under-educated nobody who is stumbling his way through poo poo and maybe figured she wasn’t worth an rear end-kicking. I don’t think he knows what he’s getting into with the mafia, though. And I think Frankie is the one who’s going to bring poo poo down on them because he’s the bigger idiot of the two.

I can see it like Treme, where (season one Treme spoilers) arguably the most recognizable actor (John Goodman) goes out after the first season. Anyway. Show owns.

I'm totally cool with Krumholtz getting fat if he gets a ton more work. The guy is an awesome character actor. What exactly is the Deuce anyway? The cops talk about it like it is a geographical area. C.C. vacillating from being needy and insecure to the hyper-masculine alpha dog to soft spoken and charming and convincingly fronting like he genuinely cares about the women he's manipulating and exploiting is super creepy and disturbing to me for some reason. Especially because the show opens with a scene of him displaying his presumably natural state of having a sort of flattened demeanor when he's listening to a fellow pimp pontificate about politis. Its a great performance from Gary Carr, as is Dominique Fishback's as Darlene. It's good to see Chris from the Wire return too. James Franco definitely feels out of place as just James Franco, who I guess has to be in every movie about sex and porn industries these days and is needlessly dual cast. Like other people have said I typically feel like Maggie Gyllennhaal tends to overact but she's on point in this. David Simon is definitely back, even if this is an order of magnitude more pulpy and lurid than the Wire ever stooped to.

I'm glad other people are liking C.C. and Darlene. They both have a lot of theatre experience and I'm impressed they're able to adapt to the less, well, theatrical acting of TV Drama. I really think Gary Carr could be the next Idris Elba.
