Eh, the amount we spend on our military is 3.3% of our GDP. That's not nothing, but it's by no means wildly inappropriate to our standing in the world. I'm perfectly happy with where it's at, and honestly, we could easily toss a few hundred billion extra in there and be perfectly okay. People look at our military budget and just think in absolute terms tend to forget just how ridiculously, ludicrously wealthy we are as a nation.

I will admit it's not as sexy as the 500th M1 Abrams the Army doesn't want, another tomahawk to blow up some insurgents armed with AK's, or providing Boeing/LockMart CEOs with retirement parachutes, but maybe we could give it a try.

So I know a lot of you guys have been affected by the recent data breaches, either at Equi-gofuckyourself-fax or the loving OPM. I finally sat down and froze all my credit reports and it wasn't as hard as I feared it would be. Took me about 90 minutes to go through and freeze the big 3 plus Chexsystems. Secret Service, FBI, and other orgs at the data breach summit all seem to conclude that the breaches are going to get worse before they get better. ~200-300 nonstate actors are behind almost all of the breaches since 2005, and operate at a level beyond most (implied, US) cybercommands operate at. It's like an organized crime cartel on steroids according to the keynote speaker this morning. Total number of breached records and services have reached a sort of critical mass that makes future macro-scale breaches and hacks exponentially easier and within the reach of less sophisticated actors. 2017 trending to blow away 2016 record and that was before the SEC and Deloitte things went public last week. Hold onto your asses.

I work in Industrial InfoSec (think ICS and SCADA systems) and a lot of my client base either don't have a SOC or just recently got one. We're talking about massive multinational companies in some instances.

The way the CISO casually talked about the Chinese exfiltrating gigabytes of data on a weekly basis gave me half a dozen grey hairs. Got the offer, great pay and benes but I had to turn it down cause the stress would have taken a decade off my life. I don't know how these places manage beyond pure inertia

The Chinese are loving grand-masters of industrial espionage. They'll buy one of our injection molding machines and as soon as the techs are done setting it up and they leave, the machine will be stripped down to it's components parts and scrutinized, and then copied. Then when it gets hosed up getting put back together our techs will suddenly wonder where those 6 additional machines came from, down to the paint color and everything. The jist I've gotten from our sales and tech guys is; their molds and machines last about 1/3 as long as ours do...but cost about 1/4.

Like America should have a super robust safety net but America is also in a very unique situation geo-strategically in that we are ALWAYS the away team. not just the away team, we're the away team like an NFL team in lodnon. our logistical footprint is loving mindboggoling when you look at the rest of the world and getting beans bullets and bodies to wherever they need to be is loving expensive. Our logistical tail is so incredibly complex it almost gets my dick hard from a project management perspective so yeah we need and should spend a bunch of money and significantly more money than everyone else doing that kind of poo poo cause we require capablities no one e lse does also the fact that we need to be able to maintain 2 major theaters and an expeditionary force. Which i think is an appropriate level of force for us as world hegemon (lol) and all that poo poo but we could def spend the money better I also would argue that we are directing money into the wrong things, like cyber and drones and electronic warefare is such a new battlefield that we are going to get loving spanked in...unless we start making it it rain nukes
